The American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) recognized seventeen teachers of German for their outstanding contributions to the teaching and learn‐ ing of German in the US. The 2012 awards recipients were recognized at a special presentation in conjunction with their annual convention held on November 17 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Carol Anne Costabile‐Heming, Professor of German at the University of North Texas in Denton and Marilyn Metzler from Chapel Hill High School, North Carolina, received AATG’s highest honor, the Outstanding German Educator Award. This award is presented in recognition of excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the German teaching profession. The award is accompanied by the Friedrich‐Gerstäcker‐Travel Grant sponsored by Checkpoint Charlie Foundation in Berlin. With so many dynamic thriving German programs, the selec‐ tion committee really had a difficult task. We are fortunate to have so many excellent German teachers,” said Karin Baumgartner, chair of the awards committee. Albrecht Classen, Professor of German at the University of Arizona, re‐ ceived the Friend of German Award, which recognizes exemplary leader‐ ship in the advocacy of German and German language education. Uwe Goodall‐Heising of Hanover High School in New Hampshire, Jennifer Kraeer of North Dorchester High School in Hurlock, Maryland, and Janelle Morgan of the Milwaukee School of Languages in Wisconsin received the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award. The Embassy recognizes up‐and‐coming German teachers for excellence in teaching, creativity, and outstanding dedication. Congratulations! Six educators were recognized with the Goethe‐Institut / AATG Certificate of Merit for their achievements in fur‐ thering the teaching of German. 2012 awardees are Burkhard Henke, Professor of German at Davidson College in North Carolina; Sigurd Piwek, fourth‐grade teachers at the Milwaukee German Immersion School in Wisconsin; Roslyn Raney, teacher at the Sequoia Adult School in Menlo Park, California; Brenda Stewart, German teacher at Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska; Susanne M. Wagner, Assistant Professor of German at the Univer‐ sity of Arkansas at Little Rock; and Heidi Walz‐Jungmann, teacher at the Franciscan Montessori Earth School in Portland, Oregon. The AATG Intercultural Student Experiences Language Matters Award was presented to Kate Stewart from the Fayetteville‐Manlius Central Schools in Manlius, New York. The award recog‐ nizes a high school teacher of German who provides immersion experiences and motivates students to use the language outside the classroom. Also recognized for their contributions to the scholarly publications of the AATG were Jonathan Wipplinger of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, recipient of the Max Kade Award for Best Article in The German Quarterly; Corinna Kahnke of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and Maria Stehle of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for the Best Article Award in Die Unterrichts‐ praxis/Teaching German, and Nick Block of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, who received the AATG‐The German Quarterly Graduate Student Essay Award. Heidi Byrnes of Georgetown University received the 2012 ACTFL Wilga Rivers Award for Leadership in Foreign Lan‐ guage Education. Kathy Fegely, Antietam High School German teacher and AATG President, was named Pennsyl‐ vania State Modern Language Association's Educator of the Year.
