Six educators were recognized with the Goethe‐Institut / AATG Certificate <strong>of</strong> Merit for their achievements in fur‐<br />

thering the teaching <strong>of</strong> German. 2012 awardees are Burkhard Henke, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> German at Davidson College in<br />

North Carolina; Sigurd Piwek, fourth‐grade teachers at the Milwaukee German Immersion School in Wisconsin;<br />

Roslyn Raney, teacher at the Sequoia Adult School in Menlo Park, California; Brenda Stewart, German teacher at<br />

Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska; Susanne M. Wagner, Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> German at the Univer‐<br />

sity <strong>of</strong> Arkansas at Little Rock; and Heidi Walz‐Jungmann, teacher at the Franciscan Montessori Earth School in<br />

Portland, Oregon.<br />

The AATG Intercultural Student Experiences Language Matters Award was presented to Kate<br />

Stewart from the Fayetteville‐Manlius Central Schools in Manlius, New York. The award recog‐<br />

nizes a high school teacher <strong>of</strong> German who provides immersion experiences and motivates students<br />

to use the language outside the classroom.<br />

Also recognized for their contributions to the scholarly publications <strong>of</strong> the AATG were Jonathan<br />

Wipplinger <strong>of</strong> North Carolina State University in Raleigh, recipient <strong>of</strong> the Max Kade Award for<br />

Best Article in The German Quarterly; Corinna Kahnke <strong>of</strong> Duke University in Durham, North<br />

Carolina and Maria Stehle <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee in Knoxville for the Best Article Award in Die Unterrichts‐<br />

praxis/Teaching German, and Nick Block <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Michigan, Ann Arbor, who received the AATG‐The<br />

German Quarterly Graduate Student Essay Award.<br />

Heidi Byrnes <strong>of</strong> Georgetown University received the 2012 ACTFL Wilga Rivers Award for Leadership in Foreign Lan‐<br />

guage Education. Kathy Fegely, Antietam High School German teacher and AATG President, was named Pennsyl‐<br />

vania State Modern Language <strong>Association</strong>'s Educator <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />
