Kinder in Deutschlands Schulen (KiDS) June 23–July 7, 2013, in Leipzig, Germany AATG 2013 Summer Seminars AATG is offering an intensive two week summer seminar in Leipzig, Germany focused on Schulalltag: types of schools and their philosophy, curricula, language instruction, inte‐ gration of immigrants, after school activities, role of sports, music, parents, social net‐ works, fashion, and peer‐groups. Designed to strengthen intercultural competence and to enhance knowledge about the lives of German kids ages 6 to 14, an integral part of the seminar will be school visits, discussions with students and teachers, parents and school counselors. While in Leipzig, participants will develop both effective methods and materials for teaching the theme KiDS in American elementary and middle schools. A variety of lan‐ guage experiences and excursions will enhance the seminar. Participants will be housed with host families to facilitate the development of an even deeper cultural understanding and provide additional opportunities to improve language proficiency. Participants will be expected to create a teaching unit that they will implement during the coming school year and/or present a teaching unit or related presentation at a professional meeting based on their experience in the program. This teaching unit may be published by the AATG. This seminar is limited to 15 motivated, enthusiastic, and talented participants. The seminar includes all program costs and materials, and lodging for the two‐week program. In addition, participants receive a stipend (up to $300) toward travel from the United States to Germany. This seminar is made possible through the generous support of Transatlantik‐Programm der Bundesregierung aus Mitteln des European Recovery Program des Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi). More information at www.aatg.org Österreich QUERschnitt: von Ost nach West: June 30–July 14, 2013, in Vienna, Graz, and Innsbruck AATG is offering members a special professional development opportunity focused on Austria today. Spend two weeks explor‐ ing the exciting cities of Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck. Get to know its culture, art, literature, music, language, economics, poli‐ tics and everyday life—first hand. Explore, compare, and learn about the many regional differences as you travel from Vienna in the east to Innsbruck in the west. The seminar starts in Austria’s capital city where participants will learn about multicultural Vienna. Experience Austria’s „kleine Metropole mit hoher Lebensqualität” as you connect with its residents. The seminar continues in Graz, UNESCO city of Design and Weltkulturerbe. Graz is home to speakers of over 150 languages and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to experience the Graz city life with locals. You’ll travel through Salzburg to the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck where the final seminar days will be spent. The seminar is supported by the Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur (BmUKK). A special price for AATG members $1,575 includes program costs, materials, lodging, and transportation in Austria. Transportation to and from Austria is not included. Other Professional Development Opportunities Spring 2013 German Online Distance Education Network Web 2.0 for German Teachers A 3‐credit hour online graduate course entitled Web 2.0 for German Teachers (TEAC 922K) will be offered through the University of Nebraska‐Lincoln’s German Online Distance Education Network (GOLDEN) beginning January 7, 2013. This semester long course is designed specifically for K‐16 German educators who seek professional development and/or graduate work/degrees in German and German language education. Taught completely online, the purposes of this course are ♦ to provide professional development in instructional technology ♦ to promote integration of best pedagogical practices in German instruction ♦ to offer opportunities for German language practice ♦ to expand German culture knowledge ♦ to provide a platform for interaction, collaboration and networking among German educators. The course is taught in German for the purpose of language practice. The focus is specifically on Web 2.0 applications and their successful integration into the classroom thereby promoting active learning among students. Throughout the semester, partici‐ pants will be introduced to new Web 2.0 applications, create products using those applications, incorporate the applications into their classrooms, and discuss the results with peers online. This graduate course requires active weekly participation and is in‐ tended to create a critical mass of teachers of German who integrate technology into the language classroom. Web 2.0 for German Teachers may be taken as a single course for graduate credit or as part of the GOLDEN MA program. In either instance, admission to the UNL Graduate College is required. Read more at www.aatg.org/golden. Spring 2013 Online Course: Methods in Elementary School World Language Instruction 14 national leaders in early world language education collaborate with Marcia H. Rosenbusch, Iowa State University, by teaching course components in their areas of expertise. The collaborators, including practicing teachers and teacher trainers, represent both the commonly and the less commonly taught languages. This course meets the requirement for the specialized methods course for the Iowa Endorsement in K‐8 World Language Education. www.aatg.org/tags/professionaldevelopment East‐Central Europe, 1989: The History and Philosophy of the Peaceful Revolutions NEH Summer Seminar in Berlin and Prague The University of Colorado, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, is offering a 4‐week intensive gradu‐ ate level summer seminar for K‐12 teachers in Berlin, Germany and Prague, Czech Republic. The peaceful revolutions and fall of communism are still considered to be among the most important events of the twentieth century. The seminar takes place June 23 ‐July 20, 2013, and is open to teachers of all disciplines. Completed applications should be postmarked no later than March 4, 2013. For more information and the application form, visit www.unco.edu/psci/nehseminar. 2013 Berlin Summer Academy: The Holocaust and Present‐day Jewish Life in Germany July 14 to 21, 2013 A summer study program in Berlin, Germany, for U.S. public secondary school teachers in cooperation with the Education Division of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C. This one‐week study tour in July of each year is designed for U.S. secondary school teachers to gain insight into many of the historical, social, religious, political, and economic factors that cumulatively resulted in the Holocaust.
