AATG <strong>2013</strong> Summer Seminars<br />
AATG is <strong>of</strong>fering an intensive two week summer seminar in Leipzig, Germany focused on<br />
Schulalltag: types <strong>of</strong> schools and their philosophy, curricula, language <strong>ins</strong>truction, inte‐<br />
gration <strong>of</strong> immigrants, after school activities, role <strong>of</strong> sports, music, parents, social net‐<br />
works, fashion, and peer‐groups. Designed to strengthen intercultural competence and<br />
to enhance knowledge about the lives <strong>of</strong> German kids ages 6 to 14, an integral part <strong>of</strong><br />
the seminar will be school visits, discussions with students and teachers, parents and<br />
school counselors.<br />
While in Leipzig, participants will develop both effective methods and materials for<br />
teaching the theme KiDS in <strong>American</strong> elementary and middle schools. A variety <strong>of</strong> lan‐<br />
guage experiences and excursions will enhance the seminar. Participants will be housed with host families to facilitate<br />
the development <strong>of</strong> an even deeper cultural understanding and provide additional opportunities to improve language<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iciency.<br />
Participants will be expected to create a teaching unit that they will implement during the coming school year and/or<br />
present a teaching unit or related presentation at a pr<strong>of</strong>essional meeting based on their experience in the program.<br />
This teaching unit may be published by the AATG.<br />
This seminar is limited to 15 motivated, enthusiastic, and talented participants. The seminar includes all program costs<br />
and materials, and lodging for the two‐week program. In addition, participants receive a stipend (up to $300) toward<br />
travel from the United States to Germany. This seminar is made possible through the generous support <strong>of</strong><br />
Transatlantik‐Programm der Bundesregierung aus Mitteln des European Recovery Program des Bundesministerium für<br />
Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi).<br />

Österreich QUERschnitt: von Ost nach West:<br />
June 30–July 14, <strong>2013</strong>, in Vienna, Graz, and Innsbruck<br />
AATG is <strong>of</strong>fering members a special pr<strong>of</strong>essional development opportunity focused on Austria today. Spend two weeks explor‐<br />
ing the exciting cities <strong>of</strong> Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck. Get to know its culture, art, literature, music, language, economics, poli‐<br />
tics and everyday life—first hand.<br />
Explore, compare, and learn about the many regional differences as you<br />
travel from Vienna in the east to Innsbruck in the west. The seminar starts<br />
in Austria’s capital city where participants will learn about multicultural<br />
Vienna. Experience Austria’s „kleine Metropole mit hoher Lebensqualität”<br />
as you connect with its residents.<br />
The seminar continues in Graz, UNESCO city <strong>of</strong> Design and Weltkulturerbe.<br />
Graz is home to speakers <strong>of</strong> over 150 languages and you’ll have plenty <strong>of</strong><br />
opportunity to experience the Graz city life with locals. You’ll travel<br />
through Salzburg to the Tyrolean capital <strong>of</strong> Innsbruck where the final<br />
seminar days will be spent.<br />
The seminar is supported by the Bundesministerium für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur (BmUKK). A special price for AATG<br />
members $1,575 includes program costs, materials, lodging, and transportation in Austria. Transportation to and from Austria<br />
is not included. Participation is limited to 10 AATG members.<br />
