SECTOR SPOTLIGHT GLAMPING
more than US$2 billion, with
many forecasts and predictions
claiming that that figure will
more than double by the time we
get to 2030. That is a big number,
and there are subsequently many
opportunities to get involved in
the industry. Glamping units
are much more complex than
traditional tents with many
having similar levels of home
comfort you would find in a
hotel. For that reason, suppliers
of products like hottubs, firepits,
cooking and kitchen equipment,
beds, furniture, lighting, decking
and much more can find some
business in the trade.
Europe is one of the hotbeds of
the glamping industry, with the
UK market in particular one that
has achieved impressive growth.
It has enjoyed around 10 per cent
growth in the last few years, with
that figure expected to remain
at that level or even increase.
Pitchup.com is one of the premier
providers of online campsite
and glamping site booking in
the UK and it has seen a surge
in camping and glamping sites
joining the platform, with
360 additional locations listed
since the beginning of the year.
Almost 2,000 sites in England
alone are now fully searchable
and bookable, with a further
600 across Wales, Scotland and
Northern Ireland plus thousands
more worldwide. Its founder, Dan
Yates, said: “Over the last two
years our campsite owners have
told us about many customers
that have swapped holidays
abroad for stays closer to home
and have enjoyed it so much that
they plan to continue, and the
figures would certainly seem to
bear that out. We offer camping
pitches from just £8 per night
and glamping stays in readymade
accommodation from as
little as £25 a night. Add to that
the lower cost of self-catering,
plenty of free activities and the
ability to take a holiday within a
few miles of home to keep fuel
costs to a minimum, it’s easy to
see how outdoor holidays are
more achievable for those whose
budgets are being squeezed.”
Another huge provider of
glamping stays is Campspot.
Since the start of 2021, Campspot
has added more than 700 new
campgrounds to its network,
with those campgrounds using
Campspot software reporting an
average of 75 per cent year-overyear
revenue increase. To further
boost the industry, Campspot
launched a public online
marketplace in spring 2020 that
allows campers to search and
book more than 130,000 different
campsites. It also has an app that
has more than 75,000 downloads.
“This has been a dynamic,
fast-paced and exciting year
at Campspot,” said Michael
Scheinman, CEO of the company
“I couldn’t be more proud
of the Campspot team for
delivering on our mission to
improve the camping experience
for travellers and operators alike.
We are grateful to be a partner
to thousands of campgrounds,
who impress us every day with
their commitment to serving
our mutual guests. The 2022
outlook is one of optimism – for
the outdoor industry, for our
partners, and for Campspot –
and we look forward to another
banner year ahead.”
