Memphis. The result is vibrant, fun, and instantly
comfortable. “When you walk in the door, you
know this is going to be a good night,” David
smiles. “We have created an ‘experience’ that
makes you feel transported to a different place.
Even the bathrooms are Instagrammable.”
The food lives up to the visual hype, with a
menu split into two equal parts. The traditional
Catalan menu offers such delicacies as the
Gambas al Ajillo (olive oil cooked gulf shrimp
served with shaved garlic, lemon, olives & red
pepper) and the Broqueta de filet (grilled beef
skewers with sautéed kale & red bell pepper
puree). Meanwhile, the flip side of the menu,
composed of Catalan dishes inspired by the
Memphis vibe, boasts such instant hits as its
Pebrots amb arroz caldoso (piquillo peppers
stuffed with picada and saffron rice) and Albondigas
Catalana (meatballs stewed in tomatoes
and olives). The light fare is perfect for a neighborhood
that thrives off of traffic from the nearby
theater district, while drawing on the city’s
legendary barbecue status to create new culinary
conversations.
Miracles don’t come easy, so when they
do pop up, it’s a reason to celebrate. Sticking
together through the bumps and bruises that
come with every design project, David and his
team pulled one off, and in record time. But
even bigger than the professional accomplishment
is the personal milestone this project represented
for David in the ever-progressing work
of accepting one’s own talent and believing what
you see when it’s put to the test. “For me,” he says,
“this was much more than a design project. This
was a way for me to push my creative boundaries,
prove to myself and my trajectory as a designer.
[To prove] that I am capable! This was a ‘you
