Abstract Works of Self-Expression
Moroccan rag rugs, better known as Boucherouites,
are unique among the many rugs made by the
women of Morocco’s Berber or Amazigh tribes.
While rug weaving has been both an honored
necessity and a high art among the Amazigh
people since time immemorial, the creation of
Boucherouite rugs is a fairly modern art by an
ancient people.
It was members of the Lamtuna Amazigh that
founded Morocco in 1070 AD with the building of
Marrakech. From there they established the vast
Almoravid empire which not only encompasses
large portions of the Maghreb, but essentially
all of Andalusian Spain, stretching as far north as
Zaragoza. Today, Amazigh tribes reside largely in
the Atlas Mountains, away from Morocco’s major
cities.
