California Road Trip
By: Lisa Kemmerling /
The Fashionable Traveler
My love of road trips began as a young child.
Remembering our first one to Missouri to
visit my Aunt and Uncle who were stationed in
the area, we took a few side trips to see the St. Louis Arch and Six Flags
over mid America.
Being 6 years old, it didn’t dawn on me that all 8 of us piled into my
parents Chevy station wagon may not be the most comfortable four
hour ride. To me it was the journey of a lifetime!
Thus began my love for the open road and using my eyes as a visual
camera.
Fast forward to the current day, not too much has changed except
that seat belts are required, and most cars have surround sound music,
and air conditioning. Road trips can be so much fun especially when
they’re short ones to either California, Arizona, or Utah.
Recently, we decided to meet one of our longtime friends for her
birthday in Santa Barbara, a beautiful destination featuring miles
of pristine beaches. Both my husband and I are seasoned travelers,
and mostly he leaves the planning to me; however, with this trip he
organized a day for us to see some amazing wineries.
One of those awesome places was Sanford Winery, in Lompoc,
California. A little trivia: If you’ve ever seen the movie “Sideways” parts
of it were filmed at Sanford.
Knowing the weather was going to be in the low 60’s during the day
and cooler at night, I needed to figure out the attire to go along with the
Santa Barbara area known as the “American Riviera.”
Casual is the style for California! A denim jacket, blouse, ankle bootie
or boots, scarf, long sleeve t-shirt, and jeans are a must. For guys similar
attire - going along with the casual look.
Weather is highly unpredictable in winter along the coast, so adding
an umbrella for rain and a hat for heat is a must.
Here’s hoping your trips take you to unexpected places, finding the
joy and memories that will remind all that life is good.
