BILL BROTHERTON
Let’s take a ride in the Wayback Machine, shall we?
It’s the spring of 2017, and the dormant North Shore Golf magazine has been brought back to life
by Lynn’s proud Essex Media Group, a formidable publishing house that also produces the Daily Item,
weekly newspapers in Lynnfield, Marblehead and Peabody, and quarterly magazines in the 01940,
01945 and 01907 zip codes.
2017 is wild! The U.S. Senior Open is about to tee off at Salem Country Club; Anne Marie
Tobin, our associate editor and a Massachusetts Golf Hall of Famer, chats with brand new PGA
Commissioner Jay Monahan, a Belmont native, about the job; our columnist Bob Green writes about a
move to manufacture golf balls that don’t go as far.
Here it is, years later, and things are eerily similar. We hear that Salem might invite the USGA back
for a Senior Open Championship or U.S. Women's Open in 2026 to celebrate the 100th anniversary
of the opening for play of the club's golf course. Jay Monahan is rumored to be on the hot seat because
of some controversial PGA Tour proposals triggered by that upstart LIV league, including a plan to,
yes, manufacture golf balls that don’t go as far. (Bob revisits that dead ball plan in his Shades of Green
column in this issue.)
OK, it’s time for me to return to the modern day so I can brag about this newsy Spring 2023 issue
of North Shore Golf … but mostly to binge-watch “Full Swing” before my Netflix trial membership
runs out.
The centerpiece of this issue is a look at the remarkable success of numerous junior programs in
Massachusetts and an introduction to several boys and girls who are succeeding big time before they
even reach high school. Nearly every club, both private and public, has a strong junior program that
teaches kids about golf, sure, but also other things that will help them gain confidence and grow into
successful adults.
Back in 2017, we were awed by the talent of such “kids” as Chris Francoeur, Nick Maccario and
Steven DiLisio, who are now excelling on the national stage. The past couple of years we’ve celebrated
the success of the Emmerich brothers of Kernwood, the Smith sisters of Westford, the Buddenhagens
of Essex County Club, the O'Hallorans of Myopia, the Turners of Bass Rocks, the Tufts of Tedesco,
the Waisnors of Sagamore Spring, Sean Dully, Aiden LeBlanc, Abby Zhu. ... the list goes on and on.
Now it’s time to say “hello” to NEPGA Junior Tour standouts Bobby MacAulay, Leo Su, Dalila
Meyers, Charlotte Rollins, and Stephen and Michael Forgione.
Also in this issue, we profile David Sibley, the head PGA pro at Gannon Municipal GC in Lynn,
who is president of the Board of Directors for the New England PGA’s Massachusetts Chapter, and
his fight to stay healthy. Over at Thomson CC in North Reading, the faces in the pro shop are the
same but pro-motions have occurred, if you’ll excuse the terrible pun.
We have a nicely newsy Notebook and we look back at Ben Hogan’s thrilling visit to Salem CC for
an exhibition 70 years ago.
Hmmm. That sounds like a fun time. I’d be jazzed to see Hogan and Snead tackle that Donald Ross
masterpiece, wouldn’t you? Let’s rev up that Wayback Machine one more time.
And thank you for reading and supporting this magazine all these years. See you on the course!
Junior
achievement
There's lots of support
for state's young golfers
Brianna Sovring
By Bill Brotherton
It’s often been said that golfers –
especially young players – from
New England are at a significant
disadvantage because of frosty falls,
frigid winters and rainy springs.
But that’s no longer the case. The
Massachusetts Chapter of the New England
PGA, Mass Golf and individual clubs and
courses are offering more junior programs
than ever before.
And more and more youngsters are
enthusiastically participating in such
programs as the NEPGA’s Junior Tour and
Junior League, Mass Golf’s Youth on
Course and First Tee initiatives and
benefiting from strong support at their
clubs, both private and public.
The NEPGA’s Junior Tour is one
such success story.
Founded in 1995, it established
a goal to help develop younger
golfers, foster sportsmanship and provide
competitions at some of the region’s premier courses.
Brianna Sovring, NEPGA Junior Golf and Player
Development Manager since 2021, said the program has
enjoyed phenomenal growth.
More than 1000 kids take part, she said, and they can play
in as many or as few events as they and their parents want.
“We have a schedule of more than 100 tournaments this
season, starting in April and running through August. It’s a
really cool environment. There is no pressure. We’re here to
have fun and play golf.”
Participants are awarded points based on where they
finish in each event, earning 25 points for finishing first and
lesser amounts down the line. A Tour Championship is held
at the end of the summer, just before school
starts, and medals, awards and trophies
are handed out. A celebratory Awards
Banquet closes out the season.
Membership fee is $135.
Cost for each event is $45
($35 for 9-hole divisions).
Swag bags filled with all sorts
of goodies are included.
The Junior Tour is
open to all boys and girls
ages 9-21 who reside in
or are members of a
golf course, public or
private, that employs
a PGA professional.
Most courses offer
reasonably priced junior
memberships. The Boys 11
& under division and the Girls
13 & under division play 9 holes,
all others play 18 holes. Caddies are
not permitted, nor are spectators –
notably parents/grandparents – permitted
on the course.
Sovring herself benefited from junior events. Her dad
introduced her to the game when she was 7 years old. At age
12 she started playing on the PGA Junior Tour in New York
state, and made the high school team when she was in 7th
grade. Four years of college golf followed at State University
of New York at Cortland.
“There are many North Shore kids who stand out,” said
Sovring. Six of those young golfers are featured in this issue.
A TASTE OF MARBLEHEAD
Meet Me @ Mai Tai Lounge for dinner and drinks
Opened in December 2021, Mai Tai
Lounge is a relatively new addition
to the Marblehead restaurant scene.
Walking up the wooden front steps,
customers are greeted with a modern
mix of lounge and restaurant.
The name “Mai Tai” refers to
a cocktail made of rum, Curaçao
liqueur, orgeat syrup and lime juice.
It's one of the characteristic cocktails
in Tiki culture — which kind of speaks
to the restaurant's blend of eating and
drinking.
Mai Tai Lounge is owner Amanda
Breen's first restaurant business. She
believes there's room for really good
local restaurants so that Marbleheaders
don't have to travel to Boston to have a
great dining experience.
Mai Tai Lounge managed to open
its door amid the pandemic. Breen
said the pandemic did complicate the
preparation, but the community was
ready to dine out.
At the end of 2021, Mai Tai served
its first customer and now has the
capacity to serve around 66 seated
customers, not including the outdoor
area.
Thomas Saltsman — the artist who
installed an Egyptian cobra goddess
in town during Halloween — was the
designer of the restaurant. According
Breen, the average price of a dish is
around $25.
“I think it was really just that the
space and the abilities and the people
came together at the right time,” said
Breen.
Manager Kevin Le also played a
role in turning Mai Tai Lounge into
a reality. He has been in the catering
industry for 17 years and is the creator
of every dish and cocktail at Mai Tai
Lounge. Breen also said Le has been
instrumental in training the staff in
how to prepare the dishes.
Before he came to Marblehead,
Le worked in Washington, D.C. at
many high-end restaurants. Later,
he obtained his certificate at the Le
Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts
in Boston.
Le met Breen at the very end of a
bar in Swampscott. Le was serving
as the bartender and manager, and
Breen was a customer. After that, they
together brainstormed the idea of a
Kevin Le is the general manager of Mai Tai Lounge on Pleasant Street.
fusion-food restaurant, the results of
Le’s 17 years of practice.
Mai Tai is Le’s dream come true
after decades of work. The food on
the menu traces back to Vietnam,
Thailand, Germany and China, Le
said.
Le suggested customers try the
lobster rangoon. “It's fresh milk with a
local lobster and green Swiss onions.
It's got a crispy on the outside.”
He also recommends the “Mai
Mango Scallop.” He added: “With a
little drop of butter over the top with
mango salsa, they have fresh mango
and a little sweetness.”
Mai Tai Lounge is inseparable
from its bar section, which features
a full page of drinks including nine
signature Mai Tai cocktails with fun
names including High Tide Mai Thai,
a gluten-free vodka cocktail named
after the coastal location. Another
called Meet Me @ Mai Tai is a
lychee-flavored vodka cocktail.
The bar also serves a drink called
In Chamber, which includes a very
rare 12-year Japanese whisky and is
Kevin Le tosses the lobster pad Thai in a wok.
limited to one per guest. It's served on
the rocks and presented in a smoke
box when served.
Rules
changes
Every year, the United States
Golf Association and The
Royal & Ancient update the
Rules of Golf. This year, you and your
chums might actually be pleased to
see that some of those changes may
stop you from cursing and having a
meltdown.
For example, you will no longer be
penalized for replacing a club that
has been damaged during a round.
And you are now able to replace
a ball moved by natural forces
(remember poor Rickie Fowler at the
2019 Phoenix Open championship
when he placed his ball and it rolled
back into a water hazard while he
was on the green surveying his shot,
resulting in an additional 2-stroke
penalty!)
THOMSON, continued from page 9
“My father played, my grandfather
played. So they just took me with
them and I’ve loved it ever since,”
Andrews said.
Andrews has worked with Chris
Young, the previous head PGA pro
and now Thomson’s Director of Golf,
for more than a decade.
“I asked what her goal was every
year, and each time she said ‘to
become head pro’,” Young said.
“Once she got through the initial
apprenticeship and testing, we all
knew she’d get approved to be head
pro.”
Andrews played Division 1 golf at
Fairfield and served as captain for
three years. She was a member of
the 2011 Massachusetts USGA State
Team, the 2012 WGAM Player of the
Year runner-up and was the 2012
New England Women’s Amateur
Champion.
Young is starting his 14th year at
Thomson. Like Andrews, he got into
golf at a young age.
“We lived around the corner from
a public golf course, so I would go
out with my dad every once in a
while. I got hooked on it and a bunch
of my friends did too, which I think is
key in golf,” Young said. “It’s a sport
I feel a lot of people don’t get into
at a young age because they want
to do stuff with their friends like
basketball, baseball, etc.”
Young said he has always looked
ahead. “I’m always thinking about
how to move up. Out of college I was
an assistant pro, and at 27 I was a
head pro.
“When I made head pro, I was
thinking to myself, ‘Well, what’s
next?’ I think (becoming) director of
golf was the next step. There’s a little
bit more responsibility.”
First assistant golf professional
David Segal returns for his fourth
season and Matt Blouin has joined
the team as assistant pro. Thomson’s
new Food and Beverage manager is
Britony Wells.
Young said the club is finalizing a
project to install golf simulators and
that 2022 was a great year for Thomson
CC. “Rounds and revenues were both
up. We have a current wait list for
membership and I see 2023 being even
bigger and better than 2022.”
Sibley?
Gannon pro is always
'happy to help'
By Joey Barrett
When it comes to checking
things off the list, look
no further than Gannon
Municipal GC’s David Sibley.
The 51-year-old is in the midst of his
10th year as head PGA professional at the
Lynn course, to which the club pro said, “I
just love to do it.”
Each year comes with its own plan
of attack. Sibley is responsible for
operations, merchandising and eventplanning.
But if there’s one thing that
remains – and one that always puts a
smile on his face – it’s those by his side.
“If there’s something I like most about
the club, it’s the people I encounter every
day,” Sibley said of his favorite part of the
job. “It’s the one thing that continues to
progress. … we have a good core group.”
In December, an unexpected
opportunity arose. And if you know
Sibley’s history – which includes being
head pro at Wild Wing Plantation in
Myrtle Beach, SC – you just know he took
it.
He's now the president of the Board
of Directors for the New England PGA’s
Massachusetts Chapter.
“I’m happy to help” were Sibley’s exact
words six years ago when he was in talks
with the organization.
Fast forward to now, and it’s an
experience Sibley said he’s lucky to have.
“It’s certainly been rewarding to me,”
he said. "It's about organizing the events,
the business affairs of the chapter, and
working with the professionals."
All that said, in the winter of 2021,
Sibley heard other news – he was
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He underwent chemotherapy
every other week last year at Tufts
Medical Center in Boston. Despite the
unfortunate situation he knew it was “very
manageable.”
“It’s part of my life now,” Sibley said.
“It’s just something that we’re working
with.”
And he’s going to remain optimistic.
“It’s probably made me closer to people
around me,” Sibley said. “There are some
positives that have come from it.”
Another positive in his life: golf.
With the Maine native calling himself a
“New Englander from the beginning,” he’s
been a student of the game since he was
14 years old.
“Once I started, I just couldn’t stop,”
Sibley said.

> > > SHADES OF GREEN
By BOB GREEN
DOES USGA rollback plan come up short?
D
o golf’s “elite” players hit the
ball too far?
Golf’s two main governing
bodies – the United States Golf
Association and the R&A – recently
announced a proposal to roll back the
ball in an effort to limit distance at the
elite level. This would be achieved by
changing the way they test golf balls.
They said elite players’ drives would be
10-to-20 yards shorter.
Bifurcation is the technical term. It
basically means pros will use different
equipment than amateurs. One of the
cool things about golf is that everyone
who plays the game, from beginners to
Rory McIlroy, uses the same equipment.
If the USGA and R&A get their way,
that will end as of January 1, 2026.
There will be a “Notice and Comment”
period that will extend through mid-
August. But if history is a predictor of
future events, no number of negative
comments will change their minds.
When the putter anchoring ban
was proposed in 2015, there was also
a Notice and Comment period. Many
golf organizations, both professional
and amateur, vehemently opposed it.
USGA nonetheless adopted the ban as of
January 1, 2016.
I’m certain the golf ball rollback will
go into effect January 1, 2026, because
of the USGA’s Distance Insite Report
developed over the past three years.
It shows a concern that golf clubs
can’t afford to lengthen their courses to
maintain the challenges of the original
designs and will become obsolete.
Obsolete? To the best players in the
world? Give me a break.
The 2022 U.S. Open was played at
The Country Club in Brookline. The
course was designed in 1895. It’s one of
the oldest golf courses in the country.
Maximum total yardage for the Open
was 7,222. Most likely it didn’t play that
long in any of the tournament rounds.
The winning score was 6 under par.
The two shortest holes had a profound
effect on the outcome. In the final round,
Jon Rahm was in contention. On the
315-yard 5th hole he made a bogey when
his second shot flew the green.
In the third round, Scottie Scheffler
was near the lead when he came to the
111-yard 11th hole. His tee shot flew
over the green and he ended up making
a double bogey. Scheffler finished
second at -5, 1 shot behind winner Matt
Fitzpatrick.
Perhaps scoring is the USGA’s
definition of obsolescence.
The PGA Tour just completed the
Florida swing. Take a look at the yardage
and winning scores for each event:
North Shore clubs cater to kids
By Bill Brotherton
Nearly every local club has embraced
programs that encourage youngsters to
learn and enjoy the game of golf. Here
are just a few of the offerings:
Ryan McDonald, PGA pro at
Wenham CC, and his staff have
developed one of New England’s most
successful junior programs. Wenham’s
PGA Jr. League program was recently
named the 25th best in the country. A
weekly junior golf clinic for children
ages 6-14 is held on Friday mornings.
It is geared toward beginners, but all
levels are welcome. Cost is $20 per
child.
Wenham’s PGA Jr. League teams
have won many local championships.
Two years ago, Wenham’s 17U All-
Stars won the New England Regional
Championship, then traveled to
Saratoga, N.Y., where they finished
second among teams from all of New
England and New York.
McDonald said “having fun is
our top priority, but we also learn
fundamentals, experience exciting
competition, and make a lot of friends
along the way. Our coaching staff is
made up of PGA golf professionals,
college and high school golf coaches,
college golfers, and high school and
middle school teachers.” The program,
for boys and girls ages 5-13, runs from
late May through August.
“Although it depends on the number
of players we have for (age 13 and
under players) we will most likely have
a six-team in-house league and one
travel team.”
David Dionne, head PGA
professional at Beverly G&TC, reports
that the club is hosting its own PGA
Junior League this summer. Beverly
has always been kid-friendly and
countless teens have gone on to great
success for their high school and
college teams. Dionne said current
standouts are Abby Ellis, Anthony
Barror and Henry Robinson
Frank Dully, head PGA professional
at Kernwood CC, said junior players at
the Salem club have always flourished.
The most recent standouts in a long
line of success stories have included
the Emmerich brothers (Christian/
Aiden/Max) of Swampscott and Dully’s
son Sean.
“We run an elite junior program
specializing in developing high school
and college golfers. Our golfers have
excelled at Middlebury, Colby, James
Madison, St Lawrence, Holy Cross,
Michigan State, SNHU to name a few.
Kernwood has enjoyed juniors playing
in the USGA Amateur and Junior
Amateur, Mass Open, Ouimet, New
England Amateur.
“The Emmerich/Dully class are now
all in college. The next class is Ryan/
Ryan/Ryan (Marty, Jimmy and Pete)
and Jacob Hershfield. These are the
next juniors on the horizon who will
carry the torch.
“The consistency of our professional
staff has enabled juniors to thrive not
only on the course but also as adults.
“We conducted our first Junior Girls
Club Championship last year. Nelly
Dignan won and she is also an up-andcoming
golfer. Charlie Grenier was the
boys champ.”
Kevin Murphy, head PGA pro at
Bradford CC, has been a longtime
champion of the national Youth on
Course program.
“We were one of the early supporters
of Youth on Course when it was a
pilot program about 10 years ago. We
were told our clubs, both Bradford
and Garrison, had the most kids of
any program. Kids of all levels get
instruction and the cost, $5 to play
golf, is a no-brainer. Last summer we
had 36 kids participate, three teams of
12. In 2021, we were in the mid-40s.
It’s a great program.”
Kids are also king at Reedy Meadow
in Lynnfield. PGA professional Donnie
Lyons and his staff have always gone
above and beyond for young golfers
who play at the 9-hole Lynnfield
course.
Thomson CC’s Chris Young praised
the talented Jack Moriarty, a junior
member who as a freshman at St.
John’s Prep played as one of the team’s
top players.

SHOOTING STARS
LEO SU
Age: 11
Town: Ipswich
Grade: 6, British International School of Boston
Club: Rowley CC
2022 Junior Tour record: 31 events, — 6 wins, 7
seconds and 9 thirds.
Favorite player: Rory McIlroy
DALILA MEYERS
Age: 13
Town: Danvers
Grade: 8, Holten Richmond Middle School
Club: Ferncroft CC
2022 Junior Tour record: 12 events — 10 firsts, 2
seconds
Favorite player: Rory McIlroy
Leo may be short in stature, but his golf talents are huge.
The only child of Joe and Lucy Su is the reigning Player
of the Year in the NEPGA Junior Tour’s 9-hole 13-andyounger
division. Leo played in 31 events in 2022, and
finished in the top 10 in every one, with 22 of those being
in the top three. His best rounds were 39s in Tour events
at Beverly G&TC and Reedy Meadow. He also competes in
PGA Junior League team events.
Leo accepted an invitation to compete in the boys age
12-13 division this season, which means he’ll play all 18
holes. “My scoring goal is to shoot 10-over or so,” he said.
Looking ahead, he hopes to play high school and college
golf. Though he’s just 11, he’s intrigued by playing on the
pro tour.
His dad introduced him to golf when the family was
living in China. The two spent time at driving ranges and
practicing chipping and putting.
Brent Balderston, Rowley’s head PGA professional, and
Leo have become a formidable team.
Leo took lessons from other professionals, but he and
Balderston just clicked from day one.
“One day after a lesson, he was seven or eight at the time,
I was putting the carts away and Leo came to me and asked
‘I wanted to know if you’ll be my coach.’ He’s a very good
player and he’s a hard worker.”
“I’ve worked with a lot of kids through the years, Leo is
special. He’s fun, funny, silly and energetic. His parents
don’t speak much English, and he and they are comfortable
with me.”
At the start of their partnership, Balderston, as an
incentive, told Leo if he had a good lesson they’d play
one hole afterward. Balderston, a lefty, plays righty. That
evolved into “cross-country golf.” What’s that? They might
tee off from the 6th tee box and try to get the ball on the 7th
green. Or drive from Rowley’s 1st tee, but hit their second
shots toward the 9th green.
“I love cross-country golf,” said Leo, with a smile.
Rory McIlroy is his favorite PGA player. Maybe someday
he’ll challenge Rory to a round of cross-country golf.
Dalila has shown considerable improvement in her three
years on the NEPGA Junior Tour. Last year, she won the
Tour Championship at Highlands GC in Grafton, shooting
a 13-over 85. Dalila was runner-up for Player of the Year
to Addison Cutting of Shrewsbury in her age group (Girls
13-and younger, which plays 9-hole rounds).
Dalila’s best round was a 37 at Reedy Meadow in
Lynnfield. This year she jumps into the competitive Girls
14-18 age group, which plays 18 holes.
For the interview and photo shoot, she proudly brought
along 10 medals she was awarded, one for each of her firstplace
finishes on the Junior Tour.
The daughter of Jay and Tina Meyers, Dalila also plays
field hockey, softball and basketball. Her older brother
Dominic, 16, is a member of St. John’s Prep golf team and
previously participated in the Junior League program with
great success.
A straight-A student, she will attend Malden Catholic
High School in the fall and play on its golf team. She has a
Ferncroft junior membership.
Dalila said she first picked up a golf club at age 6 or 7.
“Our house has always been filled with golf clubs. (Jay is
a manager at Golfer’s Warehouse in Danvers.). My dad is
a really good teacher. He’s taught me a lot, not just that
golf is a skill game but it’s a mental game. He puts me
in the right mindset. And my mom is so supportive and
understanding.”
Her earliest rounds were played at Middleton GC, which
closed in March 2019. “I loved Middleton. I miss it.” Golf
clinics at Atkinson Resort & CC with instruction by Brian
Diamond got the ball rolling. She’s had the opportunity
to play Salem CC and Winged Foot in New York, two of
America’s greatest courses.
She started with the NEPGA Junior Tour at age 11. “It
was challenging, not knowing all the courses,” she said.
Dalila’s goals for 2023: “I want to improve on the mind
parts of golf, and consistency with my swings.” She plays
on Ferncroft’s PGA Junior League team, mostly with friend
Allie Miller, and hopes to play college golf.

NORTH SHORE GOLF
NOTEBOOK
By Bill Brotherton
A remarkable and rare feat occurred during the Bear Hill GC
fourball last fall. Ned Yetten made a hole-in-one on #7 and
opponent Jeff Donovan made a hole-in-one on hole #16 … in
the same match!
Since Bear Hill is a 9-hole course, #7 and #16 are the same
hole. Only the length was different.
Yetten, 71, a 7-handicap, and partner Kevin Lane were 1-up
at the time. “It was about 160 yards, landing on a hill. I don’t
wear glasses when I play golf. I never saw it,” said Yetten. “Jeff
said, ‘That’s a pretty good shot Ned.’ One guy behind the green
started jumping up and down and yelling ‘It's in the hole.’ ”
They came around again for the next nine. The match was
even as they teed off on the 16th. 185 yards. Donovan hit a
pure shot, straight and true. Damned if it didn't go in the hole.
“People behind the green started yelling again,” said Yetten.
Yetten said Donovan hit his second shot on the 17th hole a
few feet from the hole and sank the birdie putt. That ace/birdie
punch gave Donovan and partner Jack Curran the win.
“It was nuts,” said Yetten. “Two aces and a near eagle in the
same round. Can you imagine! And I never saw either ball go
in the hole.” Yetten has played golf for 40+ years, previously at
Indian Ridge CC and the Golf Club at Turner Hill.
“I was so happy for Jeff. He’s a great guy. The guys on the next
tee said ‘I hope you’ve got insurance.’ I told Jeff, ‘You got the last
hole-in-one, you get the bar bill,” added Yetten with a laugh.
Two weeks earlier, Yetten got a hole-in-one on Bear Hill’s #2
hole while playing with his son, Ned.
“It was crazy,” said Donovan, a 50-year-old Stoneham
resident with a 10 handicap. “They were almost identical shots.
When Ned got his hole-in-one I turned to my partner and said, ‘I
guess it’s not our day.’ ”
Speaking of holes-in-one, there were a bunch at local clubs
last fall. In fact Bill Swiecicki got two himself, both in October
at Thomson CC. On Oct. 4, he hit a 7-wood 187 yards and on Oct.
30 his 160-yard 9-wood shot went right in the hole. Woo-hoo!
And then on Sept. 28, there were two aces on the 144-yard
12th hole at Salem CC: Stephen Freyer and John Fallon
both hit 7-irons.
And aces were wild at Kernwood CC in 2022: Michael
Brodsky on #4; Scott Hildreth, Zach McCann, Scott
Marcus and Bill Ryan, all on #9; Michael Osborne on #12;
and Eric Levy, Joel Livingston and Rob Freedman, all on
#17.
Others who got aces included: Ed Keenan Dec. 4 at
Ferncroft CC, Evan Paskalis Oct 15 at Ferncroft CC, Jarret
Harrigan Oct. 14 at Wenham CC, Scott Deffer Sept. 29 at
Wenham CC, Ken Holmes Sept. 23 at Ipswich CC, Ronald
LaBrecque Sept. 1 at Hickory Hill GC, Domenic Veneziano
Aug. 20 at Salem CC, Peter Tehan Aug. 19 at Turner Hill, and
the next few years, drainage work, renovating
tee boxes, sand traps, fairways, and cart
paths.” … Carter, who is in his 26th year at
Hillview, said his entire staff is back this year:
superintendent Colin Smethurst (7th year)
and assistant pros Matt Price (14th year)
and Gary Lynch assistant pro (3rd year). …
In 2022, Wendy VanderHart and Hanne
Castle played well, and most-improved was
George Stack.
Ryan Train, beginning his second year as
head PGA pro at Tedesco CC, reports changes
to his staff for 2023. Assistants Camden
Morrison (now competing professionally on
the Symetra Tour) and Alex Glover (career
change) have departed. PGA pro Ron Coiro
returns as first assistant and newcomers
include Lee Jatkevicius from Fauquier
Springs CC, Sam Freund from Alpine CC
and Weston Lazarus from Winthrop GC.
… Tedesco members are elated to play the
new #15 green after a successful October
renovation by noted course architect Ron
Forse, with expert supervision by Director
of Grounds Peter Hasak and Golf Course
Superintendent Michael Hughes. Extensive
tree work has been done on the course around
holes 6, 7 and 12 through 15 highlighting
more of the natural ground features and rock
outcroppings on the course. … Finally, in late
April, Tedesco will unveil its renovated Grille
& Bar, which got a $1.3 million facelift.
Tedesco’s General Manager/Chief
Operating Officer Mike McGillicuddy has
been awarded the Certified Club Manager
designation by the Club Management
Association of America (CMAA). Having been
a Class “A” PGA professional for the past 25
years, Mike was also just elected to the PGA of
America’s Quarter Century Club, one of only
50 PGA Professionals nationwide to hold both
the Class “A” PGA and CCM distinctions.
The 6th green, a challenging signature
par 3 at Bradford CC, has been rebuilt with a
wooden wall that’s TCP-esque. Upgrades were
made to the function rooms, as well. … Kevin
Murphy, head PGA pro at Bradford and
longtime Haverhill High School golf coach,
said the club will again host the Joe Healey
Memorial tourney this year. From proceeds,
some $9,000 in scholarships were given to
nine candidates who work at golf courses
in the Haverhill/Windham NH area. It has
handed out $70,000 to 90 recipients in the
tournament’s 11 year history.
