A remarkable and rare feat occurred during the Bear Hill GC
fourball last fall. Ned Yetten made a hole-in-one on #7 and
opponent Jeff Donovan made a hole-in-one on hole #16 … in
the same match!
Since Bear Hill is a 9-hole course, #7 and #16 are the same
hole. Only the length was different.
Yetten, 71, a 7-handicap, and partner Kevin Lane were 1-up
at the time. “It was about 160 yards, landing on a hill. I don’t
wear glasses when I play golf. I never saw it,” said Yetten. “Jeff
said, ‘That’s a pretty good shot Ned.’ One guy behind the green
started jumping up and down and yelling ‘It's in the hole.’ ”
They came around again for the next nine. The match was
even as they teed off on the 16th. 185 yards. Donovan hit a
pure shot, straight and true. Damned if it didn't go in the hole.
“People behind the green started yelling again,” said Yetten.
Yetten said Donovan hit his second shot on the 17th hole a
few feet from the hole and sank the birdie putt. That ace/birdie
punch gave Donovan and partner Jack Curran the win.
“It was nuts,” said Yetten. “Two aces and a near eagle in the
same round. Can you imagine! And I never saw either ball go
in the hole.” Yetten has played golf for 40+ years, previously at
Indian Ridge CC and the Golf Club at Turner Hill.
“I was so happy for Jeff. He’s a great guy. The guys on the next
tee said ‘I hope you’ve got insurance.’ I told Jeff, ‘You got the last
hole-in-one, you get the bar bill,” added Yetten with a laugh.
Two weeks earlier, Yetten got a hole-in-one on Bear Hill’s #2
hole while playing with his son, Ned.
“It was crazy,” said Donovan, a 50-year-old Stoneham
resident with a 10 handicap. “They were almost identical shots.
When Ned got his hole-in-one I turned to my partner and said, ‘I
guess it’s not our day.’ ”
Speaking of holes-in-one, there were a bunch at local clubs
last fall. In fact Bill Swiecicki got two himself, both in October
at Thomson CC. On Oct. 4, he hit a 7-wood 187 yards and on Oct.
30 his 160-yard 9-wood shot went right in the hole. Woo-hoo!
And then on Sept. 28, there were two aces on the 144-yard
12th hole at Salem CC: Stephen Freyer and John Fallon
both hit 7-irons.
And aces were wild at Kernwood CC in 2022: Michael
Brodsky on #4; Scott Hildreth, Zach McCann, Scott
Marcus and Bill Ryan, all on #9; Michael Osborne on #12;
and Eric Levy, Joel Livingston and Rob Freedman, all on
#17.
Others who got aces included: Ed Keenan Dec. 4 at
Ferncroft CC, Evan Paskalis Oct 15 at Ferncroft CC, Jarret
Harrigan Oct. 14 at Wenham CC, Scott Deffer Sept. 29 at
Wenham CC, Ken Holmes Sept. 23 at Ipswich CC, Ronald
LaBrecque Sept. 1 at Hickory Hill GC, Domenic Veneziano
Aug. 20 at Salem CC, Peter Tehan Aug. 19 at Turner Hill, and
Debra McNeil Aug. 8 at Haverhill CC.
Green Meadow GC, the 375-acre, 36-hole course in Hudson,
NH, is closed for good. The 61-year-old course that averaged
