Sibley?
Gannon pro is always
'happy to help'

When it comes to checking
things off the list, look
no further than Gannon
Municipal GC’s David Sibley.
The 51-year-old is in the midst of his
10th year as head PGA professional at the
Lynn course, to which the club pro said, “I
just love to do it.”
Each year comes with its own plan
of attack. Sibley is responsible for
operations, merchandising and eventplanning.
But if there’s one thing that
remains – and one that always puts a
smile on his face – it’s those by his side.
“If there’s something I like most about
the club, it’s the people I encounter every
day,” Sibley said of his favorite part of the
job. “It’s the one thing that continues to
progress. … we have a good core group.”
In December, an unexpected
opportunity arose. And if you know
Sibley’s history – which includes being
head pro at Wild Wing Plantation in
Myrtle Beach, SC – you just know he took
it.
He's now the president of the Board
of Directors for the New England PGA’s
Massachusetts Chapter.
“I’m happy to help” were Sibley’s exact
words six years ago when he was in talks
with the organization.
Fast forward to now, and it’s an
experience Sibley said he’s lucky to have.
“It’s certainly been rewarding to me,”
he said. "It's about organizing the events,
the business affairs of the chapter, and
working with the professionals."
All that said, in the winter of 2021,
Sibley heard other news – he was
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He underwent chemotherapy
every other week last year at Tufts
Medical Center in Boston. Despite the
unfortunate situation he knew it was “very
manageable.”
“It’s part of my life now,” Sibley said.
“It’s just something that we’re working
with.”
And he’s going to remain optimistic.
“It’s probably made me closer to people
around me,” Sibley said. “There are some
positives that have come from it.”
Another positive in his life: golf.
With the Maine native calling himself a
“New Englander from the beginning,” he’s
been a student of the game since he was
14 years old.
“Once I started, I just couldn’t stop,”
Sibley said.
