Bridal hair
trends for 2023

I’ve always been somewhat
perplexed with the planning of
bridal hair.
There’s often this ritual of growing hair longer so
that the bride can have more choice and variation,
which makes sense. What puzzles me, though, is
how often we’re then asked to pin, tie and constrict
hair into compact little twists, buns and chignons
that hide all this beautiful, longer hair we’ve spent
the last few months nurturing.
Thankfully there is a much more relaxed, funloving
bridal trend emerging in 2023, with gowns
that show raised hemlines, gentle figure catching
silhouettes and soft floral patterns.
This is reflected in wedding hairstyles, too.
We’re seeing a move away from the stiff, solid pinups
and complex buns and braids towards styles
that are much more fluid, boho and ‘un-done’.
If you’re planning your own bridal hairstyle, here
is some inspiration.
For brides looking to a half up/half down style,
soft, gentle beach waves with understated volume
show off the hair more. Gently sweeping hair
swept away from the face, cheeks and jaw helps
to accentuate your neck and collar bones as hair
falls softly across the shoulders.
Long hair
If your hair is long, past the shoulders, consider
a soft roller set for delicate volume, or a wide,
gentle barrel tong to add soft movement. If you
want your hair off your face, consider a dressed-up
ponytail. Create a little width at the temple area
and then gather the hair back into a loose, low
ponytail. Add the tiniest amount of back-brushing
to fill the pony tail out then loosely tie a wide silk
or satin ribbon in a casual bow at the nape of
the neck.
Medium length hair
For medium length hair at, or just below, the
shoulders, consider a ‘Lob’ hair cut (a longer bob
shape) to create thicker, more blunt ends. Add
soft movement with a styling wand. Create a low
seductive fringe that tucks behind the ears. Add
slides or combs to one side and decorate with soft
florals or feathers.
Short hair
For shorter hair we can still stay with the softer,
undone, fairytale theme. Think about a decorated
and ornate Alice band, even attach a short face
veil for seduction and mystique.
Try to book well in advance for these services
as many salons get very busy in wedding season.
Book a consultation with your stylist and plan out
one or two pre-day trials so you test out some
ideas and get a feel for the final look - and a quote
on the costs involved. Bear in mind that costs for
special occasion hair are often based on time,
rather than just the service, so the price may be a
little more if it takes longer.
Remember your hair is the gown you never
take off. Keep it elegant, playful, relaxed and
fun. Sounds like the perfect theme for the whole
day to me.
