FASHION Cannon Hall gets catwalk ready This summer, take a trip down the most stylish of memory lanes as a new fashion exhibition opens at Cannon Hall Museum in Barnsley. Catwalking: Fashion Through the Lens of Chris Moore gives a rare and unique insight into runway fashions over the decades as captured by Chris Moore, the godfather of catwalk photography. The exhibition launches on Saturday 20th <strong>May</strong> and will be on until Sunday 10th September. The museum will be adorned with photographs from Moore’s 60-year-long career, as well a selection of corresponding garments that have been loaned by the luxury fashion houses. Chris Moore, now 89, was one of the first photographers to snap live fashion when haute couture Parisian salons opened their doors to the camera lens in the 1960s. When he started, runway shows didn’t even exist. He’s since spent his life on capturing the excitement and atmosphere of ready-to-wear fashion shows and this exhibition highlights the evolution of fashion he has witnessed. Few can say they’ve seen more than Moore. The montage of photographs shines a spotlight on era defining catwalk moments from the Big Four shows in London, Milan, Paris and New York. See original pictures from some incredible runway shows by Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and 16 aroundtownmagazine.co.uk John Galliano. It also charts the rise of the supermodel in the Nineties, with familiar faces like Linda, Cindy, Naomi, Kate and Claudia – plus Moore’s favourite model to work with, Christy Turlington. Interview footage provides further insight into the craft of a man who has seen the careers of so many designers and models skyrocket. Stunning rooms in the South Front, overlooking the vast parklands, will have gowns and outfits on display from the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and Comme des Garcons. The touring exhibition has been curated by The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle in County Durham, not far from Moore’s hometown of Newcastle. It includes interview footage of Chris Moore detailing his signature photography style that combined his previous experience working as a fashion photographer for Vogue and a commercial photo-journalist on Fleet Street. The team at Barnsley Museums have also paid homage to local people with connections to fashion such as Rita Britton and Victoria Nixon. Another fascinating addition is a collection of looks amassed by local salon owner, Simon Nicholls, over a thirty-year period. Inspired by the exhibition, there will be an exciting workshop taking place during the spring bank school holidays. Children can become a dynamic designer at Cool Couture, on Tuesday 30th <strong>May</strong>, creating a theatrical costume using nothing but paper. The free two-hour workshops take place at 10am and 1pm and are suitable for children over eight, but places must be booked via Eventbrite. www.cannon-hall.com
