WHERE DO you think Darfield’s
new multi-million dollar indoor
sport and recreation facility
should go?
That’s the question the district
council will be asking as part of
the Long Term Plan consultation.
District councillors voted to start
planning for the initial stage of an
indoor sport and recreation facility
in Darfield to be built in 2029.
The total build
cost of the facility
would be about
$15-25 million. The
yearly operating
cost, based on a
one-court facility,
is $150,000 per Denise
annum.
Kidd
District council
group manager of community
services and facilities Denise
Kidd said they know the
Malvern community wants to see
additional sports facilities.
“What we need to work out
now, with the community, is
where it would be located and
what services should be included,”
said Kidd.
IN AUGUST we ran an
article about planned changes
to policing in the district.
Well known Lincoln
cut backs he had become
So we asked one of
Canterbury’s top police
He said: “There is no plan
to do anything to the Lincoln
there is nothing to see. We
talk about things, we talk
POLICE HAVE revealed a
new staffing plan that involves
officers based 24 hours a day
at the district headquarters in
Rolleston.
They say it will mean more
police on the streets and accessibility
to communities.
But the trade-off for more
officers based at Rolleston appears
to be at the expense of the
Lincoln and Leeston stations.
Lincoln, once a three-officer
station, has been cut back to
one, with an emphasis on community
policing, and Leeston
goes from three to two. Darfield
remains a three-officer station.
Senior Sergeant Rachel Walker
said the new strategy was in
response to Selwyn’s growing
population.
“We want to ensure we are delivering
the best and most timely
service to our growing and
changing community. A 24/7
response model means more
coverage and more accessibility
for our communities,” she said.
Walker would not comment
on the cutbacks at the Lincoln
and Leeston stations.
But the New Zealand Police
Association, the police officers’
union, confirmed the new staffing
at the satellite stations. The
changes came into effect on May
1, though the Lincoln station
has been operating at one for
sometime.
NZPA president Chris Cahill
said some officers had expressed
concern about the changes, but
overall he believed they would
be good for the community.
There would be a review of the
changes in six months, involving
police staff and the community,
to ensure they were working, he
said.
Walker said the changes
include a 24/7 public safety team
made up of frontline response
officers based at the Rolleston
station.
Last Wednesday, police
responded to a ram-raid at Noel
arriving shortly after the breakin
at 2.20am. Police pursued the
offenders as they fled towards
Christchurch before abandoning
the pursuit.
Walker said the changes
would mean the needs of the
community were better met.
There will be no change to the
Rolleston station opening hours.
The front counter will be open
District councillors were given
do really well, they get out and
are visible walking the beat and
and whether this 24/7 (model)
“It is a trial, let’s see how it
Walker said the changes were
needed given the big population
growth in recent years and a
significant change in demographics.
happy to see the police adapting
its services.
“The 24-7 policing trial is a
surrounding areas,” he said.
Intersection
closure on
hold; threat
of legal action
• By Daniel Alvey
THE THREAT of legal action
has put the proposed closure of a
Tai Tapu intersection on hold.
District council staff
recommended Perymans Rd be
closed at the intersection with
State Highway 75. It would mean
residents and other motorists
would have to use Lincoln-Tai
Tapu Rd instead to get to State
Highway 75.
But the council’s transport and
infrastructure committee has decided
to put the staff recommendation
on hold for three months,
until more quantitative data for
the closure is provided.
It came after Perrymans Rd
resident John Ryan addressed
the committee where he outlined
his concerns with how the public
consultation over the closure
was conducted. Ryan claimed
questions to the public were
“manipulative”.
He said if the district council
signed off on the current proposal,
he would take legal action.
“It (the report) stated that
28 people do not have any
opposition. The term do not
have any opposition is not taken
kindly because I believe this is
almost manipulative wording.
The use of double negatives is
not appreciated,” Ryan told the
committee.
Springs Ward councillor Grant
Miller proposed a solution, where
the road would be sealed and a
trial would be held for six months
with the intersection remaining
open to gather data.
“I have proposed the amendment
in an attempt to provide a
way forward because I perceive
the staff suggestion is going to
lead us into a pathway of litiga-
Lincoln High School students are “super excited” to be presenting the school’s
biennial production, said head of department drama Sandra McLean. Dress
rehearsals have started for Chicago – High School Edition, to stage at the school’s
hall on June 14-17. Pictured is Roxie Hart, played in this scene by Emma Moore,
announcing she is going to have a baby. McLean said students were enjoying the
acting challenge of their characters putting on personas to try and outsmart each
other. “Chicago has great musical numbers and often dark humour.” Bookings for
Chicago – High School Edition are through trybooking.co.nz/MXA
tion and delays,” Miller said.
Regardless of the decision for
the intersection, the last 500m of
Perymans Rd is being sealed.
District council district group
manager for infrastructure and
property Murray Washington
said any sealing would be after
winter, giving council staff time
to gather more evidence.
“Sealing of the road would
likely happen September/
October,” Washington told
the committee.
He said it was agreed that
work would not proceed until
the district council receives a
further, comprehensive report
with additional detail to enable
it to make a good decision on the
future of the intersection.
“The future report will contain
a full assessment of the safety
of the current intersection,
inclusive of all crash data, vehicle
movement data, consideration
for and of local agricultural
activity, suggested improvements
and treatments, a summary of
associated costs, communications
with Waka Kotahi, and Waka
Te Ara Ātea to get symbols, digital
signage – but no ‘library’ in name
• By Daniel Alvey
TE ARA ĀTEA will not get a
name change to include the word
‘library’.
District councillors made the
decision at a community services
committee meeting where a staff
report instead recommended
adding internationallyrecognised
symbols, including
one for ‘library’, to the front
doors.
“This isn’t a discussion about
the name of the building – it
is about signage,” Mayor Sam
Broughton told the meeting.
“So where is the appropriate
place to put signage on our
beautiful Te Ara Ātea.”
The Rolleston Residents
Association has led the call to
include ‘library’ under Te Ara
Ātea’s signage. The Selwyn Times
has received a large amount of
feedback from residents on both
sides of the debate.
As well as the symbols, 24/7
digital displays, showing the
services and activities at Te
Ara Ātea, will be placed in the
Tennyson St windows and face
the road.
The symbols and digital
SERVICES:
The word
library
will not
be added
to the Te
Ara Ātea
signage but
the symbol
(inset) for
library will
be put on
a sign at
the front
entrance.
displays are set to be added to
the building before the end of
next month.
Rolleston Ward district
councillor Sophie McInnes said
adding library to
the name would
not be accurate
as Te Ara Ātea is
not just a library
but offers other
Sophie
McInnes
services too, such
as a cafe, play
and study areas,
meeting rooms,
and outdoor spaces.
Its name was gifted by Te
Taumutu Rūnanga in 2018. Te
Ara Ātea can be translated as the
trails to the world, the pathway
into space, the unobstructed
trail.
Springs Ward district
councillor Debra Hasson said
when names are gifted to
public facilities by Māori more
needs to be done to inform the
community what they mean.
“I understand that there will
be a story, but it’s important that
the community understand the
narrative of the story.”
McInnes said the story of the
name can be found online and
inside the building. The story
behind the name describes the
facility as “the unobstructed trail
to the world and beyond”.
Some district councillors
suggested ‘library’ could be
added to the
front doors next
to the planned
symbols.
Springs Ward
councillor
Grant Miller
Debra
Hasson
said adding the
word library to
the front door
display should be
a simple decision.
But instead, he said the debate
had turned into “a mountain out
“By adding a small library
word I don’t think, in my view, it
diminishes the name at all. Why
wouldn’t we put a small sign
saying library on it if that’s what
the community
wants?” Miller
said.
He said there
had been “little
confusion in
the community
the district council staff report
the community.
“Who knows, we have got to
‘They smell bad and leach excrement’
• By Susan Sandys
GRASS VERGES on a Darfield
street have become truck stops
for vehicles leaking stock effluent
and ruining grass.
A Clinton St resident told
councillors about her concerns
at district council Annual Plan
hearings last week.
Wendy Thompson lives next
door to the Darfield Hotel. She
said the grass verge on Clinton
St adjacent to the hotel car park
had become “tatty and potholed”
over several years, from truck
drivers parking there day
and night.
“Many of these heavy
transport vehicles are livestock
trucks, which smell bad and
leach excrement while they
are parked overnight,” she told
councillors.
Trucks parked along the street
as well. They had started causing
the same issues down the road
from her house, in front of
Almond Park playground.
“Not what I think anyone
would expect next to a playground
or in any residential
street,” Thompson said.
Thompson said she had been
told by district council staff there
was no way of preventing large
trucks parking in the area.
She believed funds could be
made available in existing budgets
for the 2023/24 annual plan.
She pointed to two solutions, being
to plant trees on the verges so
trucks could not park there, and
restricting heavy vehicles from
parking on Clinton St by way of
a resolution in accordance with
the district council’s Traffic and
Parking Bylaw.
Councillor Sophie McInnes
asked Thompson how residents
of Clinton St would feel if parking
for heavy trucks was formalised
and sealed on the street.
“We have this issue in Rolleston
as well, they are parking on top of all
our footpaths because we struggle to
provide somewhere for them to go,”
McInnes said.
Thompson responded that
would not solve the odour issues.
She included photos in her
submission, including two trucks
parked on the grass verge in
Clinton St. They were a UCT and
Northern Southland Transport
vehicle.
A UCT manager told the
Selwyn Times one of their drivers
parking there would have been
“a bit of a one-off.”
Its drivers did not regularly go
through Darfield, but if they did
and needed to stop at the hotel,
they may park on a grass verge
to ensure their unit was not an
obstruction to motorists.
“It’s definitely not the sort of
thing we want to go and do all
the time,” he said.
The company had not received
any complaints about its trucks
parking on the street.
Northern Southland Transport
general manager Mark Hollis
said he also was not personally
aware of his company having
received any complaints.
Parking on a grass verge would
normally be a last resort.
“We have yards or gravel areas
where we normally park,” Hollis
said.
Thompson was one of 16 people,
from 112 submitters, who
spoke to their submissions at the
Annual Plan hearing.
Mayor Sam Broughton told
her councillors would get advice
from staff prior to making a
decision.
The district council will adopt
the 2023/24 annual plan on
June 28.
HEARING: Wendy
addresses district
councillors about the
damage caused by
trucks on her street in
managers say parking
on the grass verge on
Clinton St is not normal
procedure for UCT or
“That is the aim of this
consultation phase, to talk to the
community about those things
and come back with some more
specific options in the Long
Term Plan, reflecting what the
community wants,” Kidd said.
At this stage, there are no plans
to have a pool included in the
development, but there will be a
land provision for further aquatics
development on site.
While visitor numbers at the
current Darfield pool were down,
it is expected there will be a
greater need in the future. In the
2022/23 season, the Darfield pool
had 10,439 visits. This was about a
15 per cent reduction on previous
seasons, which was largely
attributed to a pool pump fire that
resulted in the learners’ pool area
being closed for most of March.
Selwyn Swim School operated
over the summer, with 180 bookings.
Planning is under way for
a significant increase in lesson
allocation for the 2023/24 season
to meet the increased demand.
The pool is getting a number of
improvements before next season
including a hydroslide installed,
a new water heating system, water
features for the toddler pool,
and new grandstand seating.
Are you looking to build your dream
home in Selwyn this year?
If so, the Build7 team would love to hear from you!
This month we share more about Build7 owners Fran and Jamie
Cowan’s own home build. “We know many of our customers love villas.
We also want to inspire people to think about what they would have
in their dream house, whether that is a new character home or one
with the sleek lines and shapes of a contemporary build,” Fran says.
Whatever your preference, Build7 is the perfect place to come if you
are looking for help with designing and building your dream home.
Fran and Jamie’s villa
Well things are steaming along with our new villa build, despite April’s
short weeks. When writing this column, our staircase was being
installed. A momentous occasion in any building project, when you no
longer have to climb ladders, but can feel exactly what it is going to be
like living in your new home.
Wall panelling is also being added, giving a strong sense of what the
villa’s interior will look like. We have opted for wainscoting, which is
panelling that usually occupies one third of the wall, leaving the top
thirds to paint or wallpaper. This type of panelling was historically used
to protect walls from furniture and scuff marks but today it is primarily
added to bring that substance and character that we equate with
traditional family homes.
In our new villa we are using wainscoting in all rooms, except the two
children’s bedrooms, where we are adding board and batten panelling
to cover two thirds of the walls. The upper third will be covered in
wallpapers – a chocolate brown, blue and white gingham style check
in one of our young son’s rooms and a fresh blue and white rattan
textured paper in the other. In our own room, the wainscoting will cover
half the wall with the other half papered in a greeny blue grasscloth
paper.
It’s all coming together now, and we can’t wait to share what it will
look like. Both the interior and exterior of our villa have been designed
to stand the test of time and last us well into the future as a family. As
time goes by we may need to re-wallpaper or paint to freshen things
up but otherwise all aspects of this house are being built for the very
long term.
We hope you are drawing inspiration from our adventure and if you’d
like us to help you with your dream home, please don’t hesitate to get
in touch.
Build7 welcomes new building regulations
Building Code updates that will ensure the delivery of safer and
healthier New Zealand homes came into effect this month.
While many of the adjustments are standards that are already
incorporated into Build7 homes, we’ve been keeping a watchful eye
on these requirements and are here to answer any questions you may
have.
From 1 May 2023, home builds must meet new wall, floor, and roof
insulation requirements that promote energy efficiency and will deliver
long-term cost savings for property owners. Insulation requirements for
doors and windows will be implemented as part of a staged process.
Build7 co-owner Jamie Cowan welcomes the new regulations, saying
they will help to simplify building requirements across the industry.
“The minimum standard is being raised, which is definitely a positive
thing,” he says. “The changes will ultimately reduce power costs over
the lifetime of a new home.”
If you’re thinking of building and need to get your head around these
changes, give us a call. We’d be happy to discuss all the details of your
new home build.
THE SHEFFIELD Memorial
Pool will not close yet, despite
its $500,000 repair bill.
District councillors decided
not to take up the option to
close the pool and will instead
consult with the community
on its future as part of the next
Long Term Plan.
The closure was debated
at the community services
committee meeting after a staff
report was tabled on the state of
the district’s
community
pools.
The report
estimated
Sheffield pool
will need
$500,000 in
repairs before
the summer
of 2025.
Three
key areas
of concern were raised in the
report. The pool tub appears
to be leaking, there is flooding
risk around the driveway area,
and the pergola at the site has
structural issues.
District council head of sport
and recreation and author of
the report, James Richmond,
said the 70-year-old pool has
past its life expectancy.
Rolleston Ward district
councillor Sophie McInnes
said undertaking the expensive
repairs would take money away
from other planned upgrades in
the district.
“Sheffield pool is under four
different titles, the council
only owns part of the land it
sits on. The flood risk is real
and is increasing . . . the cost
of renovation is pretty high
already . . . and I’d be surprised
if it didn’t increase to a million,”
McInnes said.
“To be honest, renovating
Sheffield pool
would be
detrimental
to a Darfield
facility.
“I can accept
that Sheffield
loves and
appreciates its
70-year-old
pool but it’s
almost a wee
bit of exceptionalism to expect
it will continue forever.”
McInnes said Springfield
School also has a pool and
is only a 10min drive from
Sheffield.
District councillors also
raised the option of building
a new pool at Sheffield School.
The $70,000 a year currently
used to run Sheffield Memorial
Pool could then be given to the
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
school to help it build the new
pool.
Mayor Sam Broughton and
Richmond visited the school
earlier this year to discuss the
future of the Sheffield pool.
When asked about a potential
new pool, principal Nigel
Easson said he would discuss
the idea with the school
community and board before
commenting.
But he said the Sheffield
pool is a vital asset to the
community. He estimated it is
used about 2000 times a season
by pupils.
The report also highlighted
issues with the Killinchy Pool,
near Leeston.
It is run by volunteers but
there are not enough of them to
operate it effectively.
“This has led to decreased
testing proficiency and a lack
of clear corrective actions,” the
report stated.
“Over the 2022/23 summer
season, there were seven
occasions where the pool water
was outside of the NZ standards
and no clear corrective actions
were recorded.”
The report stated the pool had
about 80 visits last summer but
the lack of volunteers means it
may not be able to open next
season.
Mum and son on a
mission to clean up
• By Daniel Alvey
A LINCOLN mother and son are
cleaning up their township one
rubbish bag at a time.
Audrey Ross and son Liam,
8, have been picking up rubbish
near the Liffey Stream and
surrounding picnic areas after
they noticed how much was
being dumped there.
“When we got home, he asked
if we could do a rubbish run so
we went out and filled a rubbish
bag. It was almost so heavy we
couldn’t carry it home,” Ross
said.
She said the parks and reserves
around Lincoln are a “gem” and
need to be protected.
“Some of the rubbish we found
was 50m away from a rubbish
bin.”
She said it was disappointing to
go back to the same areas and see
more rubbish.
Following their initial cleanup,
Liam became interested in
starting a rubbish collection
group. While nothing has been
officially set up, Ross put a call
for help out on the Lincoln
Facebook page and a number of
people turned up to help.
The district council told Ross
WASTE: Liam Ross, 8, with the rubbish he found while
cleaning up around the Liffey Stream with his mum Audrey
Ross (left).
it will provide rubbish bags and
gloves and take some of the waste
away. “I’d like to do it once a
month – and a bigger clean-up
every six months.”
Ross hopes sharing her
experiences with the community
will inspire others to grab a bag
and pick up rubbish in their
neighbourhood.
“You don’t have to wait for me
to tell you to do something, just
grab a rubbish (bag) and get out
there.” As a single mum, Ross is
always looking to get Liam out
and about and give him different
experiences.
On their outings, they have
found all sorts of rubbish items,
but particularly cans, bottles and
food wrappers.
And the weirdest piece of
rubbish they have found? Some
old lacy underwear.
of the wine
tasters at
their sensory
booths.
No shortage of
volunteers for
wine tasting
• By Susan Sandys
LINCOLN University
researcher Amalia Bernardes
Borssato had no difficulty
recruiting volunteers for a wine
tasting experiment.
After advertising on social
media, the international
postgraduate student from Brazil
was flooded with texts and emails
from people keen to sign up.
“Wine is a product wellappreciated,
especially here in
New Zealand,” she said.
Bernardes Borssato
acknowledged many were enticed
by the prospect of free wine,
despite the brief being to sip and
spit – not sip and drink.
“Many people said that: ‘Why
not? Free wine, of course’.”
Her goal was to recruit 100
volunteers. In the end she
squeezed in an extra four and
still turned away about 20 people.
The 104 wine-lovers were aged
18 to over 60. Their job was to
participate in a 25min wine
tasting session.
Bernardes Borssato set up
eight “sensory booths” where
participants smelled and took
sips from five opaque black
glasses, each with 25ml of pinot
noir. Between each glass, they
would have water and a cracker
to clean their palette.
Bernardes Borssato made the
five wines herself, growing the
grapes at the university vineyard,
then crushing them with a hand
tool and fermenting them in
buckets before distilling the wine
into bottles.
Participants were asked to
rate how much they liked each
sample and describe the aroma
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
and flavour, choosing from
descriptors such as unripe fruit,
stalky, grassy, green, fresh, dried
herbs and earthy.
The research aims to determine
the what level of pinot noir grape
stems in the fermentation process
is favourable to consumers and
was part of Bernardes Borssato’s
PhD in wine science.
Among the tasters was dairy
farm worker Tim Lesage, 34,
from Darfield.
Originally from France,
Lesage jumped at the chance to
participate.
He said he was not tempted to
drink the wine, but instead stuck
to the experiment brief of sipping
and spitting.
“I think it’s nice you can give
your advice how you are feeling
about the different flavours,”
Lesage said.
‘Boisterous’
Rosie finds a
fur-ever home
Rosie the “boisterous” one-year-old American bulldog
cross was rehomed by the district council after it
posted a photo on its Facebook page last week. “Cute”,
“gorgeous” and “beautiful” were some of the words
commenters used to describe her as they hoped she
would soon find her fur-ever home. “Rosie was with us
for 12 days before being rehomed to an experienced
dog owner in the Waimakaririri district, as she had
remained unclaimed by any previous owner,” said an
animal control team spokesperson. The district council
had rehomed six dogs since July 1 last year. This was “a
little higher” that the previous year. “Though that’s not
unexpected, given the growing number of dogs in the
district.”
When I moved in to Rolleston
20-plus years ago I didn’t know
that I moved into a dictatorship
council area called the Selwyn
District. The mayor and his
cohorts won’t listen to their
subjects when it comes to calling
the (Te Ara Ātea) library a library.
When will they realise who pays
I am very disappointed with
the district council’s policy over
the Rolleston library. I agree this
magnificent building is for other
uses, not just a library. Surely, as
we are a multicultural society,
district councillors should be
more open-minded and listen to
public discussion on this matter.
I am aware that the name Te
Ara Ātea has been gifted by the
local iwi. Surely ‘Te Ara Ātea
Rolleston library’ could be named
like Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency. We, who have been born
in Aotearoa New Zealand, have
had to accept all the new changes
brought about by government
agencies, so surely respect us and
put both Māori and English in
the signage of all facilities.
Hilary Barry to host
spectactular night
Selwyn District Council is delighted to announce that renowned TV presenter,
Hilary Barry will be the master of ceremonies (MC) at the upcoming Selwyn
Awards Gala Dinner on 5 August.
Hilary is one of New Zealand’s most recognised reporters and currently hosts
Seven Sharp with Jeremy Wells.
Group Manager Community Services and Facilities Denise Kidd says the
Council is excited to welcome Hilary to Rolleston for the district’s highly
anticipated celebration.
“The Selwyn Awards are a special opportunity to recognise outstanding local
people and organisations doing great things in our community. We’re delighted
that Hilary will be there to keep the night flowing and energize the crowd. It’s sure
to be a spectacular night.”
In addition to her television roles, Hilary is a polished MC and public speaker.
She began her career in the Wairarapa as a radio reporter before moving to
Christchurch in the 1990s to take up a role at TV3. She then relocated to Auckland
as a reporter and presenter on 3 News, before becoming a TV3 news anchor. Hilary
now hosts Seven Sharp on TVNZ.
There is still time to submit an application or nominate someone for the Selwyn
Awards before they close on 31 May. Awards will be presented for Young Achievers,
Start-Up Business, Arts and Culture, Sports Leadership, Tourism, Environment
and Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion, Business Resilience, Community
Volunteering, Heritage and People’s Choice.
Applications can be made online at selwynawards.co.nz
The Awards Gala Awards Dinner will be held at the Selwyn Sports Centre on
5 August. Tickets go on sale from 1 June.
International visitors served slice of Selwyn
Hundreds of international tourism operators were treated to a taste of the delights of
Selwyn last week.
Visitors from over 300 tourism companies from around the world got a chance to
experience Selwyn at the TRENZ conference in Ōtautahi Christchurch last week.
Back in Canterbury for the first time in 17 years, the prestigious tourism event offered
Selwyn businesses a chance to promote the district to over 1500 event attendees
from 25 different countries.
The Council and tourism businesses in Selwyn combined to host a stall at the
conference. They also hosted morning tea for the guests during one morning of the
four-day event, where attendees were able to sample Taste Selwyn dishes made
with fresh Selwyn ingredients, while learning more about the district and tourism
destinations on offer.
They also worked together to host a day out in Selwyn where companies were able
to experience some of what the district has to offer, from hot air ballooning and jet
boating to hearing from food producers and accommodation.
Being at the event helped make some great connections and saw many companies
committing to bring new visitors to Selwyn, Council Head of Community & Economic
Development Clare Quirke says.
“We were absolutely blown away by the
positive comments and every single buyer
we talked to said they were looking to bring
people to Selwyn. We spoke to people from
Finland, Thailand, Canada, across Europe
and other parts of the world. They were
excited because they are always looking for
new products and for a point of difference
to other operators.”
New Chief
Executive
Appointed
The Council has appointed
Sharon Mason as their new Chief
Executive. Sharon comes with
over twenty years of leadership
experience in local government,
health and not-for-profit sectors.
The appointment follows a
rigorous process over the past
three months which attracted
a large number of high calibre
applicants.
Mayor Sam Broughton says he is
excited to have Sharon join the
leadership for the district. “We
had many very strong candidates apply for the role, and Councillors and I are
looking forward to welcoming Sharon and the continued energy she will bring
to our Council. We have a lot of opportunities in the district and believe Sharon
will build on the great work already underway.”
Sharon’s past leadership roles have included being the CEO of Buller District
Council, CEO of Clutha Health First and Executive Director Provider Services,
Hawkes Bay DHB. Originally from the UK, Sharon started her career as a
registered nurse joining the Queen Alexander Royal Army Nursing Corps as a
nursing officer.
Sharon comes with a diverse range of experiences and understands the
nuances of working successfully in partnership with Central government,
boards, elected members, mana whenua and staff to create a shared purpose
and strong trusted links.
“I’m really looking forward to starting my role with the Selwyn District Council
and bringing my style and brand of leadership to the district. It is a privilege
to take over from David Ward whose leadership has ensured the council is in a
strong position. I want to support the Council to continue to be a great place to
work while delivering on the expectations of the community,” she says.
Sam concluded by saying he is “looking forward to introducing Sharon to our
community and have her meet the great people that make our district tick and
call Selwyn home.”
Sharon will commence her role on Monday 31 July and will take over from
incumbent CEO David Ward who is retiring after 10 years in the role.
Changes to building consent applications
Change is coming up for those homeowners who are applying for a consent to
build on land that is still going through subdivision consent process.
From 6 June onwards, homeowners building on a newly subdivided land will
be able to apply for a building consent only after the developer has received
Council’s final approval that any of the outstanding conditions of their
subdivision resource consent have been complied with. The latter is known as
‘section 224(c) certificate’.
“We are changing the process to ensure all the subdivision consent
requirements, in particular in regards to mitigating any natural hazards, are
met before the building consent is issued”, says Tim Harris, Group Manager
Development and Growth.
“Processing a subdivision consent is a complex matter that requires the
Council to make a number of significant decisions, in particular in regards
to what natural hazards, such as flooding, may affect the land, how the
subdivision may impact surrounding land and infrastructure, and how all of
this should be mitigated.”
Following on from the cyclone Gabrielle and the general increased frequency
of severe weather and flooding events due to climate change, there is
heightened concern about building on flood-prone land.
“We are also seeing an increase in the number of subdivisions occurring in
areas affected by natural hazards. Our Council has decided to help address
this by changing its approach to managing consents. A number of other
councils are already doing this, so it’s not new”, says Tim Harris.
“It is also about providing certainty to landowners of any conditions and
requirements on building on the land that may be imposed as part of the
subdivision process.”
There will be some exceptions on a case-by-case basis, conditional on early
engagement between the developers and the Council’s building, planning and
infrastructure teams reaching agreement on specific conditions.
Waihora aim to extend
streak to five in a row
• By Jaime Cunningham
WAIHORA ARE looking to
add to their four-game winning
streak when they take on
Methven on Saturday.
Waihora dominated winless
Woodend, turning a 22-3
halftime lead into a 48-3 win,
in round 6 and taking another
step towards the Luisetti Seeds
Combined Country competition
play-offs next month.
Flanker Geoff Beaumont
scored a hat trick for Waihora,
adding to the five tries he scored
against Springston in round 5.
Waihora head coach Ross
Soper said they took a while to
get going but had a strong second
half, which bumped up their
points differential.
“It was one of those games
where I rested a few players, so
the connections were a bit new,”
he said.
“But things clicked eventually,
and we scored a few tries at the
end of the second half, which
made the score look a bit better.”
Although Waihora went
down to unbeaten Ashburton
Celtic 19-17 in round 2, Soper
said the result motivates the
Magpies each week. Since the
loss, Waihora have won their last
five games, the last three by 24
points or more. They now hold
the best points differential in the
competition with 127.
Waihora were relentless on
defense, keeping Woodend
scoreless.
“This group has always had a
good defensive line, it’s been a
massive focus for us this year.”
With their remaining games
against Methven, Hurunui and
West Melton, Soper said the
depth of the playing squad will
be key going into the big matchups.
“We’re in a great position to
make 6 or 7 changes and still
win,” he said.
“I have confidence in any of
the players.”
In other games, Prebbleton
took home both the Hayden Kerr
Memorial Trophy and the Murray
Cooper Shield after beating
TRIES: Flanker Geoff Beaumont scored a hat-trick for
Waihora against Woodend.
Lincoln-Rolleston 42-10.
The Penguins now sit three
points clear of Ashley in pool A,
while Lincoln-Rolleston have just
seven points. Prebbleton have a
big match on Saturday, with the
top spot in pool A up for grabs
when they host Ashley.
After a slow start to the competition,
in-form Darfield have a
chance of making the semi-finals
next month after their 42-24 win
over Oxford.
Sitting on 22 points alongside
Saracens and Kaiapoi, Darfield
will need to win their three
remaining games, starting with
the clash against Saracens on
Saturday.
Lincoln-Rolleston host Hornby
in round 7 and will rate their
chances of a win at home after
four loses on the trot.
In pool B, Southbridge have
bragging rights over West
Melton after their 38-32 win.
A late fight back in the second
half by West Melton was still
not enough for the fifth-placed
side – who are now out of the
playoffs. West Melton will travel
to Culverden in round 7 to play
Hurunui, while Southbridge take
on Ohoka at Mandeville.
After leading Ashburton Celtic
22-14 at halftime, Springston
looked set to record the upset of
the season at the weekend. However,
a scoreless second half saw
Springston suffer their fifth loss
of the season 40-22. They play
Woodend on Saturday, who are
at the bottom of pool B on three
points alongside Springston.
LINCOLN HAS decided to
try and build its rugby future
by employing a development
officer.
The club’s first division team
merged with Rolleston for this
season after a player drain due
to injury and defections.
The merger has proved
unsuccessful so far, with just
one win from six matches in
the Luisetti Combined Country
competition. The team was
thumped 42-10 by Prebbleton
on Saturday and face bottomplaced
Hornby in pool A this
weekend. In the past, it would
have been a walkover for
Lincoln, but not so in 2023.
Lincoln club president
Corran Pywell said the club
expects to be advertising
for a rugby development
officer soon. The role involves
recruiting players, coaches and
managers for the club’s teams,
including division 1. Pywell
also confirmed Lincoln will not
be part of a combined set up
next year. He said it was always
the intention the merger with
Rolleston would be for one
season only.
“It’s been a bit of a process,
bridging the gap. Last year
was an end of an era, and next
season will hopefully be the
start of a new era for us,” he
said.
When the Selwyn Times
revealed the merger in
February, Rolleston president
Nicky Ruki said the combined
side would last a lot longer
than a season, which would
enable the club to bring players
through the grades over time
until it was ready to field a stand
alone division 1 side again.
Said Ruki: “We’re working
with our players and looking at
recruiting more to try go alone
again.”
Rolleston has also discussed
hiring a rugby development
officer, but there were challenges
funding the position, she said.
Pywell expects “three to
four” players to return to the
division 1 squad from medical
operations and OE trips next
season, alongside several colts
players moving up to the grade.
Rolleston has no colts’ teams
this year, but Ruki said a focus
is on ensuring their large
under-16 and under-18 teams
stay with the club in the future.
“They have really good
coaches and managers who are
keen to stay with the team,” she
said.
Rolleston is expected to field
its first colts team for about
eight years next season, with
many of the club’s under-18
teams able to play in the grade
alongside school-leavers.
Prebbleton, West Melton
and Southbridge are the only
Ellesmere clubs with rugby
development officers.

in two games when they face
Christ’s College in a rematch
of last season’s Miles Toyota
Premiership bowl final on
Saturday.
The combined team kickstarted
their premiership campaign
with a 31-24 win over St Andrew’s
College at the weekend.
Trailing 19-17 at halftime,
Selwyn had the stronger second
half – scoring two tries to St Andrew’s
one to get their first four
points of the season, along with
a bonus point.
There were 10 debuts in
the team, with Fatai Enosi,
Premier netball final
contenders face off
in tight second round
• By Jaime Cunningham
AFTER THE opening round
of games were all decided by
eight goals or more, the premier
netball competition may see
some closer matches as two final
contenders face off tomorrow.
Lincoln and Greenpark A play
in the second round following
dominant wins over Broadfield
and Halswell Rugby League
respectively.
Lincoln turned around a 11-7
first quarter deficit in their first
round game against Broadfield
with a dominant second half,
winning 51-28.
After trailing 20-16 at halftime,
Broadfield managed just
12 goals in 30 minutes.
The young Halswell side
struggled for consistency after
a strong start against last year’s
finalists Greenpark A.
Halswell goal defence Kayla
Weston said the team, who are
all aged 14 to 18, were expecting
their first round clash to be the
hardest of the season.
But after their first quarter
nerves disappeared, Weston said
they enjoyed themselves for the
rest of the game.
Trailing 29-24 after 30 minutes,
Greenpark’s experience
showed throughout the second
half, limiting Halswell to nine
goals in the last quarter. Greenpark
also scored the most goals
of the round with their 61-44
win.
Said Weston: “We played our
best. Our supporters were so
proud of our effort and we now
feel like we belong in prem[ier]
1.”
Four of the team are young
enough to represent Selwyn
at under-16 level this season.
Halswell shooter Tyla Hira is
also set to become the first male
to represent Selwyn after he was
selected in the under-16 B team.
Halswell have the opportunity
to get their first points on the
board when they play West
Melton on tomorrow.
Mewanwhile, Burnham A
saw out Burnham B with a
high-scoring performance. The
defending champions won all
four quarters of their opening
game, but a strong finish to the
match saw Burnham A increase
their eight-goal halftime lead to
take out a 53-30 win.
Burham B and Broadfield play
each other in the second round,
while Burham A search for their
second win against Greenpark
B.
In the closest match of the
opening round, Greenpark B
beat West Melton 41-33. West
Melton were quick to fall behind,
scoring just five goals in
the second quarter.
Greenpark pulled away to a
14-goal lead at the end of the
third quarter, but West Melton
managed to close out the game
by winning the last period 13-7.
The late surge was a little late
for West Melton who missed
out on the magic bonus point by
three goals.
Her Rules a safe space
to boost sport for girls
THE SELWYN Sports Trust
is starting a new initiative to
help young women develop
their confidence and abilities to
participate in physical activity.
Her Rules is a
new programme
being piloted by
the trust’s wāhine
activator Karysa
Wilkinson in collaboration
with
Karysa
Wilkinson
the SportNZ It’s
My Move campaign.
“For some young females,
physical activity in the school
setting can be quite daunting, so
this programme will give them
the opportunity to design and
participate . . . on their terms,”
she said.
“I wanted to create a safe space
where female tamariki could feel
comfortable and confident to
play without feeling judged, labelled,
or left out. At the Selwyn
Sports Trust we believe that
every girl, regardless of ability or
identity, has a right and deserves
the opportunity to discover their
own passion for physical activity.”
Wilkinson has been in her
role at the trust for two years.
She said primary schools in the
district region do an amazing
job getting young people active
through a variety of play-led
programmes, so Her Rules will
complement this work.
Growing up in the United
States and playing football and
gridiron as a young person,
Wilkinson found boys dominated
the mixed grades and there
was limited access to female-only
teams and competitions.
A special feature of Her Rules
is the element of co-design.
By providing a safe and supportive
environment Her Rules
seeks to grow each participant’s
knowledge, confidence, and
sense of community in order to
best support them in growing
their personal relationship with
play, active recreation and sport.
The Her Rules pilot is
being delivered in Rolleston,
West Rolleston, Clearview,
Lemonwood Grove, Ararira
Springs and Templeton primary
schools.
Mighty Looee won the $90,000
Newman had every reason to
be excited as not only was it the
biggest win of his career, but
also one of the most improbable.
Mighty Looee broke after
starting from his 20m handicap,
Taking the smoke out of smoko
• By Isabelle Teresa
World Smokefree May leads to
the internationally observed World
Smokefree Day, 31 May. Farming
communities are as affected by tobacco
smoking and vaping as the rest of society
but have a few additional choices to make
due to the indoor/outdoor work aspect.
Under the Smokefree Environments
and Regulated Products (Vaping)
Amendment Act 2020, all indoor
workplaces must be smokefree and
vapefree as of 11 November 2020.
Aside from that legal requirement, it
is the employer’s right to set out other
aspects of their policy. So farmers can
choose whether to extend their smokefree
areas to work vehicles and to all or some
outdoor areas. Creating these policies
can be a great way for farmers to support
their staff to become and stay smokefree.
It also means that non-smoking
employees and visitors – and people
trying to quit – won’t be bothered or
endangered by second-hand smoke.
Aside from smoking’s obvious health
dangers, specific on-farm risks include
when: fuelling up, using chemicals,
and working with animals – including
milking.
Germs spread more quickly with the
frequency of putting your hands to your
mouth.
New Zealand’s goal is that, by 2025,
fewer than 5% of Kiwis will smoke.
There’s a way to go yet. 2021/22 statistics
were that 8% of adults (15+) smoked daily
– but when you unpack this, it’s 19.9% of
Māori adults and 18.2 of Pasifika, which
is a concern for these communities. Any
support that employers and teammates
can give to smoking colleagues is crucial.
“Smoko” is a Kiwi institution – but to
support all Kiwis, let’s take the smoke out
of it.
Sold-out event a success
• By Isabelle Teresa
Recently, a crowd of nearly 70 people
enjoyed the inspirational Growing Your
Farming Destiny event at Lakeside
Soldiers Memorial Hall.
The night began with Ellesmere
Sustainable Agriculture Inc’s Jo Fearn
and David Birkett reflecting on successes
and revealing the good news that further
government funding may be afoot.
It was then over to the evening’s host,
Sarah Perriam-Lampp, from the popular
Sarah’s Country podcast. As storytelling
was a focus of the evening, Sarah kicked
off with a moving story of her own –
it was 12 months ago that she had a
stress-related physical breakdown. She
described how she recovered and reenergised
before tonight’s return.
She shared her story to illustrate that
people are genuinely interested in people’s
real stories and therefore, by extension,
businesses’ real stories too.
The panellists picked up on the theme.
Lincoln University lecturer Hamish Gow
posed that farmers need to progress from
knowing their customers to knowing and
communicating with their consumers.
Consultant Tim Jones said many
international consumers willingly
pay a premium for products they feel
connected with, and suppliers such as
Waitrose enable product-search by
B Corp certification.
Central Otago deer farmer Mandy
Bell saw the change from supply chain
to value chain operations as an exciting
generational shift for all New Zealand
businesses.
Align Farms Rhys Roberts discussed
how crises are an opportunity to re-look
at the fundamentals and the necessity of
involving the upcoming generation.
Gabi and Doug Michael of Gladfield
Malt also emphasised bringing the
whole team into all discussions and the
inspirations that Brazilian Gabi brings
from her diverse perspective.
Encouraged by Sarah’s call for “chunky
hairy questions”, the floor’s heartfelt
responses included that farming is an
honourable profession and doesn’t
need to rebrand as “food producers”,
international potential is so different from
domestic market realities, and familyscale
farms can’t staff all these digital and
communications needs.
Sarah kept the mood positive with
the final message that New Zealand is
both small and innovative enough for
communities to keep sharing experiences
and cheering each other on as we all
succeed in our own styles.
The enjoyable evening included local
country and blues musician Henry
McIlraith and a delicious dinner and
dessert by The Social Platter.
GARDENING 27
Pots a quick way to brighten the home
As the days grow
shorter, it’s a good
time to get creative
with your approach to
gardening
Fill pots and baskets with
colour
All the more compelling in
late autumn and early winter,
a colourful display of pots and
plants is a quick and easy way
to cheer up an entranceway or
outdoor living space.
Container gardening is an
enjoyable any-weather activity,
preferable to digging wet winter
soil. The extra warmth and
drainage in a pot or tub of good
quality potting mix means plants
establish more quickly than they
do in cold, wet ground.
Fill pots with polyanthus,
Cyclamen or pansies for instant
colour or plant for the longer
term in big pots.
Tough, tolerant and longflowering
Flower Carpet roses
are among the best roses for pots,
as even when not in flower they
have good shape and attractive
foliage.
Avoid small porous pots,
which dry out too quickly
and feed them with controlled
release fertiliser for extra prolific
flowering.
Grasses and grass-like plants
GOING POTTY: A colourful display of pots cheers up outdoor living spaces during the cooler months.
look fabulous in pots, especially
colourful varieties such as Carex
trifida Rekohu Sunrise (green and
gold) and cordyline Red Fountain
(sparkling plum-burgundy).
For a bold tropical look in
large containers, consider Canna
Tropicanna or Tropicanna Gold.
They look wonderful in pairs
straddling an entrance with their
large colourful striped leaves
(best cut back in winter) and
vibrant late-summer flowers.
Another stunning tropical plant
for containers, indoors or out,
is cordyline Caruba Black with
shiny, dark purple-black leaves
and bushy upright growth.
Start a herb garden
A good supply of culinary
herbs can be grown in just a few
pots. Locate them in a sunny
place, as close to the kitchen as
possible. Parsley, chives, mint,
thyme, oregano and rosemary are
all very easy to grow in pots.
Plant a fragrant garden
There’s nothing like a waft of
garden perfume to lift winter
spirits.
Some of the most evocative
scents come in winter and early
spring from old-fashioned
daphne, wintersweet, luculia,
boronia, hyacinths, daffodils and
jonquils.
Bring the garden indoors
Filling a vase with treasures
picked from the garden is a
satisfying and creative way
to spend a day. Take your
imagination for a walk outdoors
PHOTOS: GETTY
and you might be surprised at
what you find. Twigs and seed
heads look lovely as indoor
decoration. Berries and fruit
with their glossy, colourful
glow make fabulous longlasting
arrangements. Evergreen
magnolias, puriri, puka and flax
provide magnificent vase foliage
any time of year.
New Zealand natives with
wonderful foliage are griselinia,
corokia, coprosma, and ferns,
great as a contrasting mix of
textures and colours. – ODT
Hybrid with luxury and speed
ADDRESSING fluctuating fuel
prices is a battle many households
are facing at present. That has
prompted many buyers to look
at alternative means of propulsion
– the take-up of electric vehicles is
staggering, it’s a market that
is going from strength to strength.
Although it’s not all that
straightforward, supply issues are
playing a part and there are many
buyers who, like me, don’t want to
fully give up fossil fuel and don’t
want to rely solely on sourcing
electricity as a way of travel.
That’s where hybrids come in,
and in-particular plug-in hybrids,
those that can be charged from
home or a designated charge
port and have the benefit of a
petrol engine in the background
so that you can travel in pure EV
mode for some distance and have
traditional four-cylinder power for
longer trips.
There are an ever-increasing
number of plug-in EVs landing in
our market, most of them sport
utility vehicles, and that is what
the market is also demanding.
However, if it’s a sedan you are
after and want to explore the
luxury market, then Mercedes-
Benz may have the car for you –
the C 350 e – it is a plug-in hybrid
with a 2-litre petrol engine. What’s
more, it is built with the true
Mercedes-Benz logic of comfort,
luxury and performance.
Even though it joins the
C-Class series, it lands here in
one specification only that lists at
$111,200. It’s around $6000 and
$23,000 more expensive than its
non-hybrid counterparts, but it
will give you fuel usage benefits
and will travel up to 100km on
purely electric.
According to Mercedes-
Benz the C 350 e will provide a
combined cycle fuel usage average
of 1.5-litre per 100km. That is, of
course, at best possible usage –
the readouts were listing around
7l/100km during my testing time,
which in real-world terms is about
as good as you can expect on a
commute or highway run. At
100km/h the engine sips fuel at
the rate of 5l/100km.
Under the bonnet sits a 2-litre
turbocharged engine. This is
much the same unit that is fitted
to the C 200 and C 300, although
the power outputs are down
significantly to the latter at 150kW
against 190kw and 320Nm against
400Nm. However, when you have
another 95kW and 440Nm from
the electric motor it’s as strong
under the bonnet as it needs to
be. On the subject of figures and
performance, Mercedes-Benz also
claims a 6.1sec to accelerate from a
standstill to 100km/h.
Cleverly, power is directed
ECONOMIC: The Mercedes-Benz C 350 e has an average
combined cycle fuel usage of 1.5-litre per 100km.
MERCEDES-BENZ: The C 350 e may be more expensive than its non-hybrid counterparts
but will travel up to 100km purely on electricity.
through a fairly traditional ninespeed
automatic transmission.
Such are the number of ratios
drive is seamless and smooth, well
the entire driving experience is
smooth, but the point I’m trying to
make as well is that the C 350 e is
little different to drive than any of
its C-Class stablemates.
I took the evaluation car on a
long highway journey, the scenic
route (SH 72) is one of
my favourites and it was
perfect the day I drove to South
Canterbury. Even though the
roads were wet at times, it felt
well attached to the road and
comfortable for a long period at
the wheel.
The C 350 e is stunningly quiet
and civilised and it has impeccable
handling manners. Riding on high
quality 18in Bridgestone Turanza
rubber there is a solid footprint on
the road surface that translates to
a very pointy feel at the steering
wheel. Turn-in is precise and
any body movement over the
suspension can be discounted, at
just 1.4m tall gravitational forces
aren’t high.
All C-Class models in New
• Price – Mercedes-Benz
C 350 e, $111,200
• Dimensions – Length,
4574mm; width, 1876mm;
height, 1664mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
1991cc, 150kW
(+95kW), 320Nm
(+440Nm), nine-speed
automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/
h, 6.1sec
• Fuel usage – 1.5l/100km
Zealand drive through the rear
wheels, and the C 350 e is no
exception. The energy coming
through the gearbox is harnessed
well by the suspension and
independent axle set-up, there’s
never a point where you think rear
end breakaway would develop,
the engineering refinement
contains all of that, along with
the sophisticated electronic safety
components.
The evaluation car was showing
an almost 800km distance to
empty (petrol) when I picked it up.
After 450km I took it back to the
dealership still showing 500km to
empty. That’s just an example of
how thrifty the C 350 e is on
the highway and associated
commute.
If you want to keep the batteries
charged I’m pleased to report
that both a fast charge cable (type
2) and a domestic supply cable
are included; the latter has good
length at 8m, perfect for my
unique charging situation at home
and, as a comparison, it’s twice the
length of that which I was using
recently in the BYD Atto 3.
Mercedes-Benz is launching
head-first into the realm of electric
vehicle transport, it was just a few
weeks ago that I drove the fully
electric EQS, both have impressed
me simply through quality and the
commitment to provide a natural
driving experience, one that you
would find in any new model
from the marque.
Personally, I’d have the
hybrid first, the turbocharged
four-cylinder engine that goes
through much Mercedes-Benz
product is simply a delight, the
benefit hybrid technology brings
in terms of fuel savings is just a
bonus.
Tips for first home buyers
Struggling to get on the property ladder
and feeling fed up? You’re not alone. Real
Estate Authority (REA) research has found
that more than half of all first home buyers
– even the ones who successfully buy a
property – find the process stressful and
overwhelming.
“We know it’s hard for people when
they’re trying to buy their first home – it’s a
complex legal process and a huge financial
deal. We want to empower them to feel
more confident and in control when they’re
making such a big decision.”
1. SORT OUT YOUR FINANCES
You’ll already know that saving is a big
part of getting ready to buy, but do you
know what else you need to do?
Getting financial advice from a qualified
advisor could be a useful step in your
planning. Owning a property means
you’re responsible for all the maintenance
and repairs – and for paying rates and
insurance. Owning an apartment may also
mean you need to pay body corporate fees.
These costs can be a bit of a shock to the
system if you’ve rented for a long time.
“It’s also a good idea to get conditional
pre-approved finance arranged so you can
move quickly when you spot a property
you really like. Having conditional preapproval
lets you know the price range you
can buy in and it shows agents and sellers
that you’re a serious buyer. It’s also crucial
if you’re planning to bid on a property at
auction.”
Don’t forget to explore ways that
you might be able to get help from the
Government. There are various forms of
assistance available if you’re a KiwiSaver
member, buying in certain areas, want
to buy a former Housing New Zealand
property or are Māori and want to live on
your ancestral land.
2. NEEDS VS WANTS
Many first home buyers discover a big
gap between what they’d like to buy and
what they can afford when they first start
looking.
“Sit down and write a tight list of what
your absolute must-haves are, then work
out what you’re willing to compromise on”.
If you’re thinking about pets and
children arriving in the short-to-medium
term, think about how these will change
your needs. Will you need to be near to
childcare or schools? Will you need a
fenced property?
“If you’re the sort of person who likes a
good list, we’ve got a useful ‘researching the
property’ checklist on settled.govt.nz that
will help you keep track of all the questions
to ask about a property. This is especially
useful if you’re looking at more than one
property at a time.”
3. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Don’t let your desperation to find
somewhere blind you to a property’s faults.
“Do as much research as you can about
a property,” that means getting a lawyer
on board to make sure all the paperwork
is in order and to help you understand if
there are any issues. We also recommend
getting a qualified building inspector who
has professional indemnity insurance to
prepare a comprehensive report on the
property.”
If you’re worried about paying for this
kind of report before you make an offer
(due to a lack of time or funds), you can
make them a condition of your offer.
Remember that paying for good advice is
an investment that will buy you more peace
of mind than a quick once-over by a mate.
4. RECOGNISE YOUR LIMITS
Buying a ‘doer-upper’ is a Kiwi tradition,
especially for first-home buyers, but we’re
not all blessed with the right skills. Factor
this in before you make an offer on a
‘renovator’s dream’.
“Be honest with yourselves about how
much DIY you can really do, especially if
you’ve got pets and kids”.
“Getting professionals in to help will
cost more, but it will also make the process
faster. It may also be better in the long term
when it comes to selling the property if any
work has been done properly with the right
consents.”
For independent guidance and
information on buying or selling, check
out settled.govt.nz.
SELLING YOUR HOME?
Potential buyers are
likely to be living in your
neighbourhood, it’s an
area that they already love
and are actively seeking
to stay in. That’s why it
makes sense to advertise
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Decorating on a budget –
keep it simple
Keeping it simple is key to decorating within a
budget. A few key changes or up-dating what
you already have can make your home feel
different without costing the earth.
When a bare dining table feels too
minimal but a tablecloth seems too
formal, opt for a simple table runner. It is
a small (and usually pretty cheap) accessory
that instantly dresses up the dining room and
adds another focal point
Buy fresh flowers. They not only add a lovely scent,
but their vibrant colours and sophisticated look
will make a huge difference. Try different vases to
change the look whether it is a jug or a bottle.
Continuing with the nature theme, plants
can also make for chic décor at a low price.
Find an affordable option and then style it on a
beautiful stand or in a pot that can be painted
to complement your home’s other decor.
Candles are an affordable feature that can
seriously shift the mood and atmosphere of a space
with a huge range available in both style and scent.
If you already have throw pillows or cushions, replacing
the covers is an easy and cheap process to
refresh your bedroom or living area.
Updating your kitchen could be as
simple as painting the cabinets or
buying some new storage solutions
that you can have out on display on
the benches. Bright colours suit any
environment. Keeping your pasta
or cereal in stylish glass or plastic
containers is sure to make you feel like
you have your life together. Whether
tucked away or on display, they look pretty
good, too.
Purchasing and installing stylish hardware is an
affordable way to make your kitchen feel brand new
overnight; handles and knobs will transform your space on
a budget.
Nothing spruces up a dated bathroom faster than a new
mirror to hang above the vanity or sink. You can find
plenty of affordable new options or go searching for a cool
vintage piece with a low price tag. Or upgrade your shower
curtain, which is often underrated as a décor item but is
usually the most decorative item in your bathroom.
With a bit of imagination and creativity updating the
look of your home does not have to be expensive but can
feel like you have spent a million dollars.
