Wednesday May 17 2023 Selwyn Times • By Barry Clarke and Daniel Alvey POLICE HAVE revealed a new staffing plan that involves officers based 24 hours a day at the district headquarters in Rolleston. They say it will mean more police on the streets and accessibility to communities. But the trade-off for more officers based at Rolleston appears to be at the expense of the Lincoln and Leeston stations. Lincoln, once a three-officer station, has been cut back to one, with an emphasis on community policing, and Leeston goes from three to two. Darfield remains a three-officer station. Senior Sergeant Rachel Walker said the new strategy was in response to Selwyn’s growing population. “We want to ensure we are delivering the best and most timely service to our growing and changing community. A 24/7 response model means more coverage and more accessibility for our communities,” she said. Walker would not comment on the cutbacks at the Lincoln and Leeston stations. But the New Zealand Police Association, the police officers’ union, confirmed the new staffing at the satellite stations. The changes came into effect on May 1, though the Lincoln station has been operating at one for sometime. NZPA president Chris Cahill said some officers had expressed concern about the changes, but overall he believed they would be good for the community. There would be a review of the changes in six months, involving police staff and the community, to ensure they were working, he said. Walker said the changes include a 24/7 public safety team made up of frontline response officers based at the Rolleston station. I will certainly be keeping my eye on Lincoln’s requirements.” Walker said the changes were needed given the big population growth in recent years and a significant change in demographics. Mayor Sam Broughton was happy to see the police adapting its services. “The 24-7 policing trial is a huge improvement and will increase the responsiveness of police and bring better safety to Leeston, Lincoln Rolleston, and surrounding areas,” he said. NEWS 3 In Brief ONE CASE OF MALARIA RECORDED IN DISTRICT One case of malaria was notified in Selwyn for the month of April. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said the patient contracted the disease overseas. In Canterbury, there had been two cases of the mosquito-borne parasite notified in 2022, one in 2021, one in 2020, and two in 2019. “There are no Anopheles species of mosquitoes in New Zealand, so there is no risk of local mosquitoborne transmission,” Pink said.
