Te Ara Ātea to get symbols, digital
signage – but no ‘library’ in name
• By Daniel Alvey
TE ARA ĀTEA will not get a
name change to include the word
‘library’.
District councillors made the
decision at a community services
committee meeting where a staff
report instead recommended
adding internationallyrecognised
symbols, including
one for ‘library’, to the front
doors.
“This isn’t a discussion about
the name of the building – it
is about signage,” Mayor Sam
Broughton told the meeting.
“So where is the appropriate
place to put signage on our
beautiful Te Ara Ātea.”
The Rolleston Residents
Association has led the call to
include ‘library’ under Te Ara
Ātea’s signage. The Selwyn Times
has received a large amount of
feedback from residents on both
sides of the debate.
As well as the symbols, 24/7
digital displays, showing the
services and activities at Te
Ara Ātea, will be placed in the
Tennyson St windows and face
the road.
The word
will not
be added
to the Te
Ara Ātea
signage but
the symbol
(inset) for
library will
be put on
a sign at
the front
entrance.
displays are set to be added to
the building before the end of
next month.
Rolleston Ward district
councillor Sophie McInnes said
adding library to
the name would
not be accurate
as Te Ara Ātea is
not just a library
but offers other
Sophie
McInnes
services too, such
as a cafe, play
and study areas,
meeting rooms,
and outdoor spaces.
Its name was gifted by Te
Taumutu Rūnanga in 2018. Te
Ara Ātea can be translated as the
trails to the world, the pathway
into space, the unobstructed
trail.
Springs Ward district
councillor Debra Hasson said
when names are gifted to
public facilities by Māori more
needs to be done to inform the
community what they mean.
“I understand that there will
be a story, but it’s important that
the community understand the
narrative of the story.”
McInnes said the story of the
name can be found online and
inside the building. The story
behind the name describes the
facility as “the unobstructed trail
to the world and beyond”.
Some district councillors
suggested ‘library’ could be
added to the
front doors next
to the planned
symbols.
Springs Ward
councillor
Grant Miller
Debra
Hasson
said adding the
word library to
the front door
display should be
a simple decision.
But instead, he said the debate
had turned into “a mountain out
“By adding a small library
word I don’t think, in my view, it
diminishes the name at all. Why
wouldn’t we put a small sign
saying library on it if that’s what
the community
wants?” Miller
said.
He said there
had been “little
confusion in
the community
over the building
being a library”.
the district council staff report
and claimed it lacked detail, said
it was not clear if the proposed
changes would be accepted by
the community.
“Who knows, we have got to
hope so,” Christensen said.
