Wednesday May 17 2023 Selwyn Times Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz SPORT 21 Selwyn prepares to make it two in a row • By Jaime Cunningham SELWYN SCHOOLS first XV are looking for their second win in two games when they face Christ’s College in a rematch of last season’s Miles Toyota Premiership bowl final on Saturday. The combined team kickstarted their premiership campaign with a 31-24 win over St Andrew’s College at the weekend. Trailing 19-17 at halftime, Selwyn had the stronger second half – scoring two tries to St Andrew’s one to get their first four points of the season, along with a bonus point. There were 10 debuts in the team, with Fatai Enosi, Jerome Archibald, Joel Wilson, Brooklyn Dalgety, Jono Wilson, Devon Flynn, Kai Tiltman, Freddy Cambridge, Joe Moore and Ryder Allin all playing their first game for Selwyn. The team will now turn their attention to their second round clash against Christ’s College. Selwyn last played Christ’s in August in the bowl final for ninth place, where Christ’s was victorious, winning 42-14. Selwyn finished tenth in last year’s championship, just managing to qualify for the new 10-team competition this season. • Selwyn’s first home game of the season starts at 2.45pm at Lincoln High School on Saturday. PHOTO: GRAEME TILTMAN Premier netball final contenders face off in tight second round • By Jaime Cunningham AFTER THE opening round of games were all decided by eight goals or more, the premier netball competition may see some closer matches as two final contenders face off tomorrow. Lincoln and Greenpark A play in the second round following dominant wins over Broadfield and Halswell Rugby League respectively. Lincoln turned around a 11-7 first quarter deficit in their first round game against Broadfield with a dominant second half, winning 51-28. After trailing 20-16 at halftime, Broadfield managed just 12 goals in 30 minutes. The young Halswell side struggled for consistency after a strong start against last year’s finalists Greenpark A. Halswell goal defence Kayla Weston said the team, who are all aged 14 to 18, were expecting their first round clash to be the hardest of the season. But after their first quarter nerves disappeared, Weston said they enjoyed themselves for the rest of the game. Trailing 29-24 after 30 minutes, Greenpark’s experience showed throughout the second half, limiting Halswell to nine goals in the last quarter. Greenpark also scored the most goals of the round with their 61-44 win. Said Weston: “We played our best. Our supporters were so proud of our effort and we now feel like we belong in prem[ier] 1.” Four of the team are young enough to represent Selwyn at under-16 level this season. Halswell shooter Tyla Hira is also set to become the first male to represent Selwyn after he was selected in the under-16 B team. Halswell have the opportunity to get their first points on the board when they play West Melton on tomorrow. Mewanwhile, Burnham A saw out Burnham B with a high-scoring performance. The defending champions won all four quarters of their opening game, but a strong finish to the match saw Burnham A increase their eight-goal halftime lead to take out a 53-30 win. Burham B and Broadfield play each other in the second round, while Burham A search for their second win against Greenpark B. In the closest match of the opening round, Greenpark B beat West Melton 41-33. West Melton were quick to fall behind, scoring just five goals in the second quarter. Greenpark pulled away to a 14-goal lead at the end of the third quarter, but West Melton managed to close out the game by winning the last period 13-7. The late surge was a little late for West Melton who missed out on the magic bonus point by three goals. Round 1 results Lincoln 51, Broadfield 28. Burnham A 53, Burnham B 30. Rolleston club day leaves players ‘very happy’ Rolleston Rugby Club hosted its “very successful” club day at Foster Park over the weekend. All teams played at home for the occasion, although some teams couldn’t get the result they were after. Club president Nicky Ruki said the event went well. “It was a very successful day. We had hot pools, a mechanic bull, and Canterbury Rugby came down.
