Taking the smoke out of smoko
• By Isabelle Teresa
World Smokefree May leads to
the internationally observed World
Smokefree Day, 31 May. Farming
communities are as affected by tobacco
smoking and vaping as the rest of society
but have a few additional choices to make
due to the indoor/outdoor work aspect.
Under the Smokefree Environments
and Regulated Products (Vaping)
Amendment Act 2020, all indoor
workplaces must be smokefree and
vapefree as of 11 November 2020.
Aside from that legal requirement, it
is the employer’s right to set out other
aspects of their policy. So farmers can
choose whether to extend their smokefree
areas to work vehicles and to all or some
outdoor areas. Creating these policies
can be a great way for farmers to support
their staff to become and stay smokefree.
It also means that non-smoking
employees and visitors – and people
trying to quit – won’t be bothered or
endangered by second-hand smoke.
Aside from smoking’s obvious health
dangers, specific on-farm risks include
when: fuelling up, using chemicals,
and working with animals – including
milking.
Germs spread more quickly with the
frequency of putting your hands to your
mouth.
New Zealand’s goal is that, by 2025,
fewer than 5% of Kiwis will smoke.
There’s a way to go yet. 2021/22 statistics
were that 8% of adults (15+) smoked daily
– but when you unpack this, it’s 19.9% of
Māori adults and 18.2 of Pasifika, which
is a concern for these communities. Any
support that employers and teammates
can give to smoking colleagues is crucial.
“Smoko” is a Kiwi institution – but to
support all Kiwis, let’s take the smoke out
of it.
