Audrey Ross and son Liam, 8, have been picking up rubbish near the Liffey Stream and surrounding picnic areas after they noticed how much was being dumped there. “When we got home, he asked if we could do a rubbish run so we went out and filled a rubbish bag. It was almost so heavy we couldn’t carry it home,” Ross said. She said the parks and reserves around Lincoln are a “gem” and need to be protected. “Some of the rubbish we found was 50m away from a rubbish bin.” She said it was disappointing to go back to the same areas and see more rubbish. Following their initial cleanup, Liam became interested in starting a rubbish collection group. While nothing has been officially set up, Ross put a call for help out on the Lincoln Facebook page and a number of people turned up to help. The district council told Ross WASTE: Liam Ross, 8, with the rubbish he found while cleaning up around the Liffey Stream with his mum Audrey Ross (left). it will provide rubbish bags and gloves and take some of the waste away. “I’d like to do it once a month – and a bigger clean-up every six months.” Ross hopes sharing her experiences with the community will inspire others to grab a bag and pick up rubbish in their neighbourhood. “You don’t have to wait for me to tell you to do something, just grab a rubbish (bag) and get out there.” As a single mum, Ross is always looking to get Liam out and about and give him different experiences. On their outings, they have found all sorts of rubbish items, but particularly cans, bottles and food wrappers. And the weirdest piece of rubbish they have found? Some old lacy underwear.
