Finders & Keepers
Whether you’re looking to explore the world of art or find a new
purchase, these exhibitions and galleries are all great places to start
1. Beverley Johnson at
West End House Gallery
Throughout June
Water Lane, Smarden TN27 8QB
The featured artist at West End House
Gallery for June will be printmaker
Beverley Johnson. Beverley lives and works
in Aylesford, and specialises in linocuts.
The acquisition of an original Albion
printing press proved to be a turning point
from which her printmaking practice has
developed and flourishes. Her prints are
often based in nature with a wonderfully
simple graphic feel to them.
2. Graham Clarke at Up the
Garden Studio
Fri 16 – Sun 18 Jun, Fri 21 –
Sun 23 Jul, Fri 25 – Sun 27 Aug
& Fri 15 – Sun 17 Sep (11am-3pm)
Meadow View Road, Boughton
Monchelsea, Maidstone, ME17 4LF
A fascinating and characterful studio gallery,
Up The Garden Studio is a peek into the
heart and mind of local legend, Graham
Clarke. Inside, you’ll find a vast collection of
intricate and often hilarious limited edition
etchings, produced entirely by hand from
start to finish. You’ll see where the intriguing
process takes place and all the paraphernalia
involved, while browsing witty and
whimsical etchings, books, greetings cards
and posters. Graham is sometimes on hand
for a chat and if not his family will happily
welcome you and explain the copper-plate
etching process and share the stories behind
this huge collection of work.
3. Gaia by Luke Jerram comes
to Landmark Arts Centre
From 10 May
Ferry Road, Teddington TW11 9NN
Luke Jerram’s monumental new Earth
artwork, Gaia, measures 7 metres across,
and hangs suspended in the Landmark’s
stunning historic space, slowly revolving
to the sound of a specially composed track
by Dan Jones. The exhibition will have
all sorts going on around it, including late
night openings, music concerts and family
activities, but the star of the show will
certainly be Gaia itself. With the help of
imagery from NASA’s Visible Earth series,
it offers a unique perspective on our home
planet, allowing us to see the Earth as if
from space as usually only astronauts can.
As a visual representation of the fragility
and beauty of the Earth, it inspires a feeling
of awe, a profound understanding of the
interconnectivity of life, and a sense of
responsibility for the environment.
