Semi-finals just a win away
for Waihora and Prebbleton

Waihora and Prebbleton
are likely to secure semi-final
spots on Saturday.
They face bottom of the
table Hornby and Springston
respectively, who are yet to beat
an Ellesmere side this season.
It would be a major upset if
Waihora or Prebbleton were to
lose.
Both teams came away with
hard-fought wins in muddy
conditions at the weekend,
putting them at the top of the
table on 19 points each with
three round robin games to go.
Despite a challenging first half
against Lincoln-
Rolleston,
Waihora pulled
away to a bonuspoint
48-21 win.
Head coach
Ross Soper said
the score did not
reflect how close

the game was.
Waihora held a
narrow 13-7 lead at halftime.
“We dominated the early part
of the game but couldn’t execute
that into points,” he said.
“[Lincoln-Rolleston] were right
in the game at halftime.”
Soper said his team were a
bit “rusty” after their two-week
break while the Luisetti Seeds
Combined Country final was
played.
But Waihora supporters were
out in force for their club day,
helping the team dominate the
second period.
“Things started to stick in the
second half and we ran away
with it,” he said.
“The club had a great day and a
good number stayed to watch the
Crusaders – very happy I’d say.”
Prebbleton took out
Southbridge 18-13 after
recovering from their 19-7
loss to Ashburton Celtic in the
combined final, but were unable
to add to their three bonus
points.
Springston failed to get their
first win of the competition
against last year’s Coleman
Shield winners Darfield who
produced a clinical performance
at home to win 28-12 and move
into third place.
Darfield trail Prebbleton and
Waihora on 12 points.
Hornby failed to beat West
Melton at the weekend, losing
their fourth Ellesmere clash
32-12. The Red Devils have
one point due to their 24-19
loss to Lincoln-Rolleston last
month. Hornby host Waihora
on Saturday and would leapfrog
Springston with a bonus point.
Darfield take on West Melton
on Saturday in a rematch of the
combined country ninth-place
playoff. West Melton scraped
through to win 22-21 but, with
points at stake this time, the
result could affect who qualifies
for the semi-finals. Southbridge
will look to bounce back with a
win over Lincoln-Rolleston.
Both teams are still in contention
for the playoffs but need more
than a win in the remaining
three games to qualify.
