Selwyn Times Wednesday June 28 2023 22 SPORT Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Selwyn Schools hungry for victory after hard-fought losses • By Jaime Cunningham AFTER A heartbreaking loss in mudbath conditions on Friday, Selwyn Schools’ have little time to ponder before taking on Marlborough Boys’ College in a much-anticipated clash this weekend. The eighth-placed team host Marlborough Boys’ at Lincoln High on Saturday (11am), who sit seventh following a 36-22 loss against St Bede’s College. Selwyn will be hungry for a win after their 24-19 loss to third-placed St Thomas of Canterbury College in round 6. The combined team were the first to score in the rain against third-placed St Thomas’, and led for majority of the first half. However, a hard-fought second half, backed by a large number of St Thomas’ supporters, saw the home team get in front of Selwyn and hold their lead to the final whistle. Selwyn are yet to back up their first round 31-24 win over St Andrew’s College on May 13, but have had some nailbiting losses in the games since. Marlborough sit just three points ahead of Selwyn due to one more win. The round 7 clash will be Selwyn’s first game at Lincoln High this season, with previous home matches being played at Rolleston College and Darfield High. It will be Selwyn’s last match for two weeks as the Miles Toyota Premiership takes a break over the school holidays. PHOTO: GRAEME TILTMAN Lincoln High on verge of fifth win in a row • By Jaime Cunningham LINCOLN HIGH School will look to add to their four-game winning streak when they take on Cashmere High in the Connetics school girls’ premier first XI competition today. Third-placed Lincoln meet the second placed side at Foster Park at 3.30pm. Since losing 4-2 to Papanui High on May 18, Lincoln have been in hot form, soaring up the points table. The young team are in contention to take out the title with their consistent results so far, even though a majority of the players are still in year 10. It will be Lincoln’s last game for a month as the school holidays start next week. Lincoln had a bye last week, while Cashmere come off a 2-0 victory over Papanui. A win would be a good morale booster for Lincoln ahead of their game against Challenge Shieldholders and table-leaders, St Andrew’s College, on July 26. Lincoln’s boys’ team take on Shirley Boys’ High at 4.40pm following the girls’ match. It will be their first game in two weeks after a default win against Christchurch Boys’ High last week. McMeeken’s star shines • By Jaime Cunningham FORMER SELWYN United defender Zoe McMeeken is continuing to make her mark on the international stage by captaining New Zealand in the OFC under-19 championship in Fiji. McMeeken led the Junior Football Ferns to a 3-0 win over hosts Fiji last week before the team secured a quarter-final spot by thrashing Papua New TALENT: Zoe McMeeken is captaining New Zealand in the OFC under-19 championship. Guinea 11-0 on Sunday. The 19-year-old finished her second season with the Wellington Phoenix in April and is one of the most experienced in the team. McMeeken was a Junior Football Ferns squad member in last year’s FIFA under-20 World Cup in Costa Rica. New Zealand will play group C’s runner-up on Saturday’s quarter final – either the Solomon Islands, Cook Islands or Tahiti.
