LEGO building fundraiser<br />

It will be bricks galore when the<br />

Kaiapoi Gray Raven Scout Group<br />

joins with the three other scout<br />

groups in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Zone<br />

to host aLEGO brick building<br />

community fundraiser on<br />

Wednesday, July 5.<br />

Over 120,000 toy bricks will be<br />

available for the young and the<br />

young at heart, to create<br />

everything from Duplo to<br />

Technic, forests to space<br />

vehicles, cars, 4x4s, buildings or<br />

mosiacs.<br />

Rachel de Vries of House of<br />

Bricks will be bringing her<br />

talents as aLEGO master<br />

contestant to help spur the<br />

creativity in people with two<br />

hours of fun at the Rangiora<br />

Borough School Hall from 10am<br />

to noon.<br />

Tickets cost $5.50 and funds<br />

raised will help to get 36 scouts<br />

and 10 leaders to the New<br />

Zealand Scout Jamboree being<br />

held in Hamilton over the coming<br />

New Year period.<br />

Scouts from the Kaiapoi,<br />

Rangiora, Waimakariri and<br />

Glenmark groups will be<br />

travelling to Mystrey Creek after<br />

Christmas.<br />

They will join 3500 other scouts<br />

for an action packed week long<br />

international scout jamboree.<br />

William Bruce, aged 13 from<br />

Ashgrove School, says he is<br />

looking forward to the jamboree<br />

as he has heard there will be a<br />

large international contingent<br />

attending.<br />

‘‘I am expecting alot of fun<br />

activities and it will great to meet<br />

all the people coming.’’<br />

‘‘These are different things to<br />

what we do here, so it should be<br />

alot of fun.’’<br />

Liam Visker aged 13 of Kaiapoi<br />

High School, says he wants to<br />

learn lots of new things when he<br />

goes to the Jamboree.<br />

To get the scouts, their leaders,<br />

all their tents and equipment<br />

including their vehicle’s and<br />

towed field kitchen to Hamilton,<br />

the groups have to raise over<br />

$3000 per scout.<br />

There are airfares, freight<br />

costs, jamboree registration and<br />

attendance fees and food costs to<br />

be covered for the group to allow<br />

them to attend the Jamboree<br />

which alternates between the<br />

<strong>North</strong> and South Islands every<br />

three years. Rangiora has hosted<br />

one in the past but this will be the<br />

first time any of these scouts have<br />

attended one.<br />

150th Jubilee<br />

Kaiapoi Borough School’s<br />

150th birthday celebration<br />

will be achance to<br />

showcase the modern<br />

school.<br />

The school will celebrate<br />

the milestone from<br />

November 24 to 25.<br />

It has its beginnings back<br />

in 1873, celebrating its 100<br />

years in 1973, and now it is<br />

150th jubilee.<br />

Lent says the school has<br />

changed alot over the<br />

years, particularly in<br />

modern times since the<br />

2010­2011 earthquakes, and<br />

will look alot different to<br />

the many former pupils<br />

expected to turn out to<br />

celebrate the milestone.<br />

Abig welcome is being<br />

planned on Friday<br />

afternoon, November 24,<br />

with the school’s kapa haka<br />

group set to add acultural<br />

element to the<br />

celebrations.<br />

There will be an open<br />

afternoon, with senior<br />

student leaders showing<br />

people around the school, a<br />

tree planting and the<br />

unveiling of aplaque to<br />

commemorate the 150 year<br />

milestone of one of the<br />

oldest schools in Kaiapoi.<br />

Adinner is planned at the<br />

Kaiapoi Club in the<br />

evening, with John<br />

Warburton, aformer<br />

principal, the Master of<br />

Ceremonies. Mr Warburton<br />

taught at the school from<br />

1974 to 1983, and was<br />

principal from 1989 to 2005.<br />

On Saturday there will be<br />

an opportunity to reflect,<br />

connect with others and<br />

look at photos from<br />

yesteryear.<br />

There will also be photos<br />

taken by decade, and the<br />

Parent Teachers<br />

Association will put on a<br />

lunch, where acake will be<br />

cut.<br />

‘‘We will be drawing<br />

people together through<br />

kai and we will have atime<br />

capsule where people can<br />

put their thoughts down,’’<br />

says Mr van Lent.’’<br />

It will then be buried to<br />

be opened in years to come.<br />

Mr van Lent says the 150<br />

year celebration comes as<br />

the school grows. Two new<br />

classrooms will be on site<br />

in September, just afew<br />

months prior to the formal<br />

jubilee.<br />

The roll is 371, and is<br />

expected to reach over 400<br />

before the year ends, as the<br />

fast growing Silverstream<br />

continues to be one of its<br />

main feeders. On to top of<br />

this around 200 use the<br />

Tech centre on site, with 11<br />

clients school<br />

Tickets for the<br />

celebration are expected to<br />

go live from Monday, July<br />
