health students from around
Aotearoa New Zealand this
week for athreedayNoho
The initiative was a
partnership between Te Tai o
Marokura,aMāori health and
social service provider in
Kaikōura, and Hauora
Taiwhenua /Rural Health
Network’s careersprogramme.
Lisa Kahu, of Te Tai o
Marokura,said the initiative
was originallyproposed
several years ago by astudent
doctor from Kaikōura as away
to encourageyoung doctors,
nurses and dentists to work in
ruralcommunities.
‘‘Duetoher connections she
suggested Kaikōura as a
destinationand noneofthem
had been here before.
‘‘I think it is areal
opportunity for them to see
how it could work in arural
setting and it is an opportunity
for us to enticethem.
‘‘It is also achance for health
professionalstoconsider what
they are taught fromatextbook
and how it translates intothe
daytodaylives of ordinary
people.’’
The programme offered the
students the opportunity to
learnabout ‘‘the Kaupapa
(principles) of Māori health’’,
Hauora Taiwhenua chief
executive Dr Grant Davidson
said.
‘‘Healthoutcomes for rural
Māori are worse than any other
demographic in Aotearoa New
Zealand, so having our trainee
health professionals immerse
themselves in Tikanga
(knowledge) Māori,Rongoā
(medicine) Māori and Te Ao
Māori (language,customs and
protocols) is afundamental
first step in culturalsafety
training.
‘‘Reflectingonwhat they
hear and experience during
the nohomarae experience
will start the journey to
understanding conscious and
unconscious biasesand
improvingtheirempathy for
and work withtangata whenua
across this country.’’
TessaMunday wasahealth
student who attendedlast
year’s Noho Marae visit to
Kaikōura and said she enjoyed
learningabout the rich culture
and history of Ngāti Kurī and
the Kaikōura area.
‘‘I havedriven thecoastline
several timesbefore,but now
that Iunderstandthe history, I
have awhole new appreciation
of the area.
‘‘It was amazing to hear about
the opportunities in rural and
Māori health.
‘‘So often in my studies these
topics are discussed with a
deficit focus, but this
experience taught me the
importance of focusing on
strengthssuchasthe
connectednessofrural
communities,the importance
of whānau, spirituality, and
