WDC regeneration project wins award<br />

Efforts to regenerate earthquake<br />

damaged land in Kaiapoi have been<br />

recognised with another national<br />

award.<br />

Waimakariri District Council’s<br />

Regeneration Kaiapoi project won the<br />

Minister of Local Government’s Award<br />

for council /community relations at the<br />

Taituarā (Local Government<br />

Professionals Aotearoa) gala dinner<br />

recently.<br />

The award followed the project team<br />

taking out the outstanding project<br />

award at the 2022 Recreation Aotearoa<br />

Awards announced in November.<br />

Mayor Dan Gordon said he was<br />

thrilled with result.<br />

‘‘This is afantastic achievement for<br />

the council and for the communities of<br />

Kaiapoi, The Pines Beach and Kairaki.<br />

‘‘It is atestament to the communityled<br />

approach to recovery after the<br />

earthquakes and I’m very proud of the<br />

work that has been completed.<br />

‘‘The recreational opportunities<br />

available in Kaiapoi are second to none<br />

and are agreat asset to the wider<br />

district.’’<br />

Cr Al Blackie, the regeneration<br />

portfolio holder, said the award was<br />

recognition for acommunity invested in<br />

the recovery.<br />

Feedback sought on pathway<br />

Council staff are keentoget the right<br />

surface underfoot for the Kaikōura Link<br />

Pathway.<br />

The Kaikōura District Council is<br />

trialling six surfaces for the proposed<br />

pathway which will link the towncentre<br />

with PointKean on the Kaikōura<br />

Peninsula.<br />

Adisplay area has beenset up on<br />

Esplanade,opposite the Boutique Hotel,<br />

on the cornerofBrighton Street, to seek<br />

feedback on six trial surfaces.<br />

The council has received $1.9 million<br />

from the TourismInfrastructure Fund to<br />

assist withthe project.<br />

Chiefexecutive Will Doughty says staff<br />

want to make sure the pathway is<br />

accessible to all users, including walkers,<br />

skateboards,scooters, prams, wheelchairs,<br />

and those with mobility challenges.<br />

Each surface is numbered, with<br />

participants able to scan aQRcode on<br />

their phone or visitthe council website to<br />

offer feedback.<br />

They includelimestone based surfaces<br />

(crusher dust and limestonechip), which<br />

would be placed overjakmat, and concrete<br />

surfaces with different colours (silver grey,<br />

latte,soapstoneand charcoal).<br />

The community’svoteswill be<br />

incorporatedinto the final design for stage<br />

one of the pathway, which willrun from<br />

West End,alongthe Esplanade to Torquay<br />

Street. There are plans to seek feedback<br />

on elementssuch as street furniture and<br />

publicart. Voting closes, Sunday, July 2.<br />

Ideas include some fun features and<br />

display boardswith QR codes to tell<br />

peoplethe history of the area.<br />

The musical will be presented by the Hartley School of Performing Arts senior<br />

school in the first week of the school holidays. Follow Sherlock Holmes and his<br />

trusty assistant Dr Watson as they solve three different mysteries and meet some<br />

entertaining characters along the way. Discover the dancing Hound of the<br />

Baskervilles, meet the lovable band of children known as the Irregulars and be a<br />

guest at alavish wedding. Shows will run on Thursday, July 6, at 2pm and 7.30pm,<br />

Friday, July 7, at 2pm and 7.30pm, and Saturday, July 8at2pm. Tickets $18 and $20,<br />

Obvious Guilt<br />

Ablack comedy, Obvious Guilt, will be presented by the Rangiora Players in the<br />

Rangiora Players Little Theatre in <strong>North</strong>brook Road, Rangiora, on Saturday, July 8,<br />

Wednesday, July 12 to Saturday, July 15, and on Wednesday, July 19 to Saturday, July<br />

22, at 7.30pm.Matinees will be held on July 15 and 22, at 2.30pm. Tickets $20 on line<br />

into five regeneration areas, covering<br />

some 80 hectares, which had been<br />

designated residential red zone after<br />

the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.<br />

The council has collaborated with the<br />

community, mana whenua and<br />

businesses to develop initiatives<br />

including sports fields, dog parks, a<br />

mahinga kai reserve, amarine precinct<br />

and afood forest.<br />
