Waimakariri District Council’s Regeneration Kaiapoi project won the Minister of Local Government’s Award for council /community relations at the Taituarā (Local Government Professionals Aotearoa) gala dinner recently. The award followed the project team taking out the outstanding project award at the 2022 Recreation Aotearoa Awards announced in November. The Kaikōura District Council is trialling six surfaces for the proposed pathway which will link the towncentre with PointKean on the Kaikōura Peninsula. Adisplay area has beenset up on Esplanade,opposite the Boutique Hotel, on the cornerofBrighton Street, to seek feedback on six trial surfaces. The council has received $1.9 million from the TourismInfrastructure Fund to assist withthe project. Chiefexecutive Will Doughty says staff want to make sure the pathway is accessible to all users, including walkers, skateboards,scooters, prams, wheelchairs, and those with mobility challenges. Each surface is numbered, with participants able to scan aQRcode on their phone or visitthe council website to offer feedback. They includelimestone based surfaces (crusher dust and limestonechip), which would be placed overjakmat, and concrete surfaces with different colours (silver grey, latte,soapstoneand charcoal). The community’svoteswill be incorporatedinto the final design for stage one of the pathway, which willrun from West End,alongthe Esplanade to Torquay Street.
