LEGO building fundraiser By JOHN COSGROVE It will be bricks galore when the Kaiapoi Gray Raven Scout Group joins with the three other scout groups in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Zone to host aLEGO brick building community fundraiser on Wednesday, July 5. Over 120,000 toy bricks will be available for the young and the young at heart, to create everything from Duplo to Technic, forests to space vehicles, cars, 4x4s, buildings or mosiacs. Rachel de Vries of House of Bricks will be bringing her talents as aLEGO master contestant to help spur the creativity in people with two hours of fun at the Rangiora Borough School Hall from 10am to noon. Tickets cost $5.50 and funds raised will help to get 36 scouts and 10 leaders to the New Zealand Scout Jamboree being held in Hamilton over the coming New Year period. Scouts from the Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Waimakariri and Glenmark groups will be travelling to Mystrey Creek after Christmas. They will join 3500 other scouts for an action packed week long international scout jamboree. William Bruce, aged 13 from Ashgrove School, says he is looking forward to the jamboree as he has heard there will be a large international contingent attending. ‘‘I am expecting alot of fun activities and it will great to meet all the people coming.’’ Being creative ... Beth Wilhelm aged 12 of Rangiora, says she will be looking forward to the boating and water activities. ‘‘These are different things to what we do here, so it should be alot of fun.’’ Liam Visker aged 13 of Kaiapoi High School, says he wants to learn lots of new things when he goes to the Jamboree. To get the scouts, their leaders, all their tents and equipment including their vehicle’s and towed field kitchen to Hamilton, the groups have to raise over $3000 per scout. There are airfares, freight costs, jamboree registration and attendance fees and food costs to be covered for the group to allow them to attend the Jamboree which alternates between the <strong>North</strong> and South Islands every three years. Rangiora has hosted one in the past but this will be the first time any of these scouts have attended one. The school will celebrate the milestone from November 24 to 25. It has its beginnings back in 1873, celebrating its 100 years in 1973, and now it is 150th jubilee. Principal Hayden van Lent says the school has changed alot over the years, particularly in modern times since the 20102011 earthquakes, and will look alot different to the many former pupils expected to turn out to celebrate the milestone. Abig welcome is being planned on Friday afternoon, November 24, with the school’s kapa haka group set to add acultural element to the celebrations. There will be an open afternoon, with senior student leaders showing people around the school, a tree planting and the unveiling of aplaque to commemorate the 150 year milestone of one of the oldest schools in Kaiapoi. Adinner is planned at the Kaiapoi Club in the evening, with John Warburton, aformer principal, the Master of 9 Ceremonies. Mr Warburton taught at the school from 1974 to 1983, and was principal from 1989 to 2005. On Saturday there will be an opportunity to reflect, connect with others and look at photos from yesteryear. There will also be photos taken by decade, and the Parent Teachers Association will put on a lunch, where acake will be cut. ‘‘We will be drawing people together through kai and we will have atime capsule where people can put their thoughts down,’’ says Mr van Lent.’’ It will then be buried to be opened in years to come. Mr van Lent says the 150 year celebration comes as the school grows. Two new classrooms will be on site in September, just afew months prior to the formal jubilee. The roll is 371, and is expected to reach over 400 before the year ends, as the fast growing Silverstream continues to be one of its main feeders.
