Breaking New Ground
Birmingham’s Hunter House site of new full-service hotel
BY MERVIT BASHI
Big things are in store for long-time
Birmingham mainstay The Hunter House.
Kalabat Construction, along with Victor
Saroki & Associates Architects, is planning a
major $26-million hotel building project at the
location of The Hunter House restaurant and
Sunoco gas station on the northwest corner of
Maple and Woodward.
The Hilton Hotel Project, as it is called, will
result in a five-story, 120-room hotel.
The top-notch, full-service hotel will feature
restaurants, a bar and a banquet facility to
accommodate 250 people. The top floor will consist
of 15 executive apartments. Fitness facilities
will include a complete health club with an indoor
pool. To ensure that parking is not a concern for
guests, three floors of underground parking will
be included as well.
“Negotiations are underway with one of the
most well-known chefs and restaurant owners in
town, to team up in order to provide the best food
and quality of service in Birmingham,” said Ismat
Karmo of Delta Hotels, the hospitality management
company that will manage the new hotel.
According to Jamal Kalabat, CEO of Kalabat
Construction, the hotel is being built in a prime
location. “It’s the gateway to the downtown
area,” he said.
In addition, those involved with the project
expect to draw more business and leisure travelers
to Birmingham.
Loyal Hunter House patrons need not worry,
though. The original Hunter House, dating as far
back as perhaps the 1940s, will be replicated on
the first floor of the building. Famous for its “sliders,”
restaurant goers will still be able to satisfy
their burger cravings by the dozen.
The restaurant is presently operational, and is
scheduled to be closed for business only during
construction.
The Hilton Hotel is an addition to the other highrise
structures in the area. “The City of Birmingham
has been very supportive and interested in the
future of this project,” said Karmo. At a time when
downtown Birmingham has truly become a thriving
locale, entrepreneurs see an opportunity to contribute
to the economic growth of the community.
Speaking of the prospective Hilton Hotel,
Kalabat said, “There is a market demand for it.”
Well known for numerous residential and
commercial achievements, Kalabat Construction
is credited with buildings such as St. Toma
Church and Hall in Farmington Hills.
In addition, Birmingham architectural firm
Victor Saroki & Associates Architects was
responsible for the design of the prominent
Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.
Kalabat Construction and Delta Hotels have
already partnered on the Holiday Inn Express venture
in Waterford. Together, they plan on building
or acquiring three hotels during the next two years.
Groundbreaking for the Hilton Hotel is set for
early fall 2004. Construction should be complete
in mid-2005.
