Cancer Awareness
ANITA BODIYA, M.D. CONTRIBUTING COLUMNIST
Cancer. It’s a scary word. And it’s probably
safe to say that it’s a topic most people
don’t want to discuss. However, it is
something that must be talked about with your
doctor. You must understand that having cancer
doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can do. In
fact, there are preventative measures as well as
screenings that can be done.
Every month, the American Medical Association
highlights different ailments in order to raise awareness.
For instance, March is Colorectal Cancer
Awareness Month. In this column, we are giving you
an overview of cancers. It is imperative that each one
of us takes control of our health and well-being. It’s
up to us to know our own bodies and to keep
records of our medical history at home. This will really
help your doctor. Early detection can save lives
Cancer is the abnormal growth of cells that
can affect any organ or tissue of the body. Its
cause is mostly unknown, but the environment
and heredity may play roles. Finding cancer early
is important because it gives you the best chance
for treatment and cure. Cancer screens include
those done at home by yourself and those performed
by your physician.
YOU CAN HELP PREVENT CANCER BY:
• Quitting smoking and/or the use of tobacco
products.
• Eating properly. Cut down on foods high in fat
and eat more high-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables
and whole grains.
• Protecting your skin by staying out of the sun
(especially mid-day), avoiding tanning booths and
sun lamps, wearing protective clothing and hats
and using sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher.
• Exercising at least 30 to 60 minutes four to six
times each week.
SCREENING GUIDELINES FOR COMMON CANCERS
Breast Cancer
• Monthly self-breast exams starting at age 20.
• Breast exam by your doctor starting at age 20.
• Initial mammogram at age 40 and then every
one to two years.
Note: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer
in women. It is important to discuss with your
doctor what screening intervals are right for you.
You may need to begin screening earlier if you
have a family history of breast cancer.
Cervical Cancer
• Initial Pap test at age 21 or three years after
first intercourse (whichever comes first).
• Subsequent Pap tests yearly to age 30.
• Pap tests every two to three years after age 30.
Note: Intervals will vary based on your risk for
cervical cancer.
Colon and Rectal Cancer
Screening usually begins at age 50 for those at
normal risk. This involves:
• Digital rectal screenings
• Fecal occult blood test (stool) cards yearly and
colonoscopy every 10 years.
• Double contrast barium enema (X-ray test)
every five years.
