6 Volunteer Corner from Becky MacDonald Hope everyone had a great summer and is now ready to start back into the Fall. Don’t forget to nominate a fellow volunteer for upcoming awards! UPCOMING VOLUNTEER AWARDS Ontario Volunteer Service Awards This award recognizes volunteers for providing committed and dedicated service to an organization. Adults are recognized by the length of time they’ve volunteered with one organization, ranging from five to 65 years of continuous service. Youth (24 years old and under) are recognized for two or more years of continuous service. Deadline: November 1. June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism This award recognizes people and groups who have made outstanding contributions as volunteers in their communities. There are two categories: Outstanding Volunteer Award: recognizes an individual or group for their commitment to volunteering and longstanding service to their community. Up to 20 individuals and/or groups receive this award each year. Excellence in Volunteer Management Award: recognizes an individual or group from an organization that is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation or registered as a charity for their achievement in encouraging people to volunteer in their communities. Up to five individuals and/or groups receive this award each year. Deadline: November 25 . If you are interested in nominating a fellow volunteer, please speak to Becky in the main office on Mondays or Wednesdays, or email becky.macdonald@guelph.ca Orientation and Training All volunteers will be required to complete the mandatory Orientation & Training. The trainings can be completed from the comfort of your home online. For those who do not have access to a computer, training dates will be set up for you to attend in the near future. GWSA COMMITTEES Computer Mentoring If you enjoy working with computers/iPads/Apple products and have experience in this area and would like to educate others, this is for you! Computer Mentoring is on Mondays in the afternoon. Bingo Volunteers Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 pm – 3:45 pm. This will include set up, selling of cards and concession items, confirming bingo winners, supporting the caller and other duties as needed. We are asking for a commitment of once to 4 times per month based on the volunteer’s availability. Special Events Looking for a team of volunteers to assist with planning, organizing and running special events throughout the year for the members and community. Sentinel Drivers The Sentinel team is looking for drivers to assist with the delivery of the monthly newsletter – Sentinel. Travel Committee Our committee leader needs members who want to join others in the group to help brainstorm, organize, plan and possibly escort trips, travel, and tours for those seniors who love to go places! Come join in, meet new friends, and have fun! Welcome & Information Desk Looking for energetic, friendly, outgoing individuals to assist with greeting, providing tours and answering questions about the centre during the week, Monday to Friday. Two shifts available, morning and afternoon, in the main lobby. Cycling Club Looking for another volunteer to assist with leading the group on local and out of town rides. Bistro 683 - Dishwasher: Work as a team with other volunteers assisting with keeping the kitchen clean and washing dishes using the industrial dishwasher. How to get involved? Second, you will be contacted to set up an interview followed with training. If you are a current volunteer, you are more than welcome to take on more than one position. 7 Guelph Transit is adjusting bus fares and introducing a new pay-as-you-go program The changes will come into effect on September 1, 2023. Guelph Transit is making changes to its fare pricing and introducing a new monthly pay-as-you-go fare cap program starting in September. What’s changing to fares and transfers: • Day passes will be increased from $8 to $8.40. • Weekend transit pass will be discontinued. • Single ride tickets remain the same ($2.80 for adults, $2.25 for discounted (or concession) fare holders). • Riders will get an extra 30 minutes for transfers starting in September, as transfer time is being extended from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. Once you’ve tapped, your fares are capped: New pay-as-you-go program Monthly passes will change to a pay-as-you-go monthly fare cap model. Instead of a monthly pass, riders load their OnYourWay fare card with money and pay as they go. There will no longer be a need to buy a monthly pass upfront each month. With the monthly fare cap, riders pay for the first 32 single rides in a month, then tap and ride for free for the rest of the month. Visit guelphtransit.ca for more details.
