Readers react to last
week’s article on
the approval of the
District Plan by district
councillors which ruled
out any appeals against
plan changes across
Selwyn, including
the contentious 1710
home Lincoln South
subdivision, which can
now proceed
I’m part of Lincoln Voice and
it grieves me to see the mockery
of democracy that this whole
process has been regarding
PC69.
In June 2022, when the
council voted for the go ahead
of PC69, we were told by the
council’s lawyer that they had to
respect the natural justice of the
developer, and that our natural
justice as a community, was to
appeal before the Environmental
Court. We followed this advice
in good faith.
But the council made the
decision to rezone PC69, in spite
of Lincoln Voice pleading with
them to wait until the end of the
appeal, as we thought it would
affect our appeal. How did they
show any respect for our natural
justice then? And now, they
have voted again in the same
direction, knowing full well that
it will void our appeal!! It’s really
heartbreaking.
– Eléonore Dumaine
The comments in the editor’s
desk (August 30) really hit the
button, there is a lot of stuff to hit
the fan over this issue, to come.
The council think they have
got away with this one. It is not
going to be comfortable for the
councillors who voted for this
behind closed doors.
The community has had
enough.
– Colin Giddens
The councillors should be
ashamed of themselves for
pushing this decision through
behind closed doors. How can it
even be legal to change the zone
which includes an area (PC69)
which is the subject of an appeal.
The councillors who knew
that this vote would make the
PC69 ‘problem’ go away don’t
care about the residents of
Lincoln and how this affects
them. And those that say they
didn’t know should have been
better informed. This is just
another case of the greed of the
council to make money off large
subdivisions without putting
money back into those areas to
improve infrastructure
long-term.
It is simply unbelievable
that the council can get away
PC69: ‘The community has had enough’
GREEN LIGHT: The contentious 1710 home Lincoln South subdivision will now go ahead.
with this. If not illegal then it
is grossly irresponsible of the
councillors, both those that
showed up as well as those that
didn’t. They are not standing
up for the people that voted for
them and I hope they don’t get
voted back in next election.
– Rachel Barker
Absolutely incomprehensible
actions taken by our councillors
on matters it turns out that they
had not researched correctly
or properly understood. These
councillors are elected by the
people to represent the people
but then act in an underhand
manner such as this. Grant
Miller once again missing in
action. I seriously hope the
Ombudsman has something to
say in this!
– Tony McKenzie
• Grant Miller did not
respond to questions from the
Selwyn Times asking why he
was absent from the meeting
for last week’s article. After
the article appeared he said he
was absent due to illness and a
family bereavement.
I don’t belong to Lincoln Voice
but have been supporting them
with emails to council
and getting some almost useless
responses from them at times.
They just don’t seem to like
answering questions and
will deviate from the subject
regularly.
– David Meyers
Regarding the voting on
District Plan they should all be
sacked, starting at the top.
– C. Struthers
