CultureFest: Food, fun and dance<br />

Slower speeds save lives<br />

<strong>Selwyn</strong> District Council<br />

A CELEBRATION of the sounds,<br />

flavours and sights from cultures around<br />

the world will return to Lincoln Domain<br />

on Sunday.<br />

The first event in the annual three week<br />

CultureFest festival runs from 10am to<br />

2pm.<br />

The popular free family event showcases<br />

the district’s diversity with crowds of<br />

about 3000 people set to enjoy interactive<br />

activities, food and performances from<br />

community groups and residents.<br />

Stalls, featuring 28 different cultures<br />

ranging from Bulgaria to Korea and<br />

Nigeria to Japan, will be joined by performers<br />

from 18 different cultures with<br />

activities which everyone can have a go<br />

at.<br />

Among the stallholders returning this<br />

year will be Yoruba South Island New<br />

Zealand, a non-profit organisation dedicated<br />

to promoting and preserving the<br />

culture, welfare and human rights of the<br />

Yoruba people from south-west Nigeria.<br />

Yoruba general secretary Omotosho<br />

Aina said its <strong>Selwyn</strong> members were<br />

looking forward to sharing interactive activities,<br />

such as tasting traditional cuisine<br />

and learning basic Yoruba phrases. “We<br />

are excited to connect with people from<br />

different backgrounds and share the<br />

vibrant culture of the Yoruba people,”<br />

Aina said.<br />

Katharina Halkhoree from MyBretzel<br />

will also appear at CultureFest.<br />

Halkhoree will be serving up traditional<br />

German pretzels, baked fresh on<br />

site.<br />

“Last year was my first time at CultureFest<br />

and it was a great day.<br />

“People of all ages<br />

were wanting to try authentic pretzels<br />

for the first time or talk about their own<br />

travels to Germany.<br />

“It’s a good way to meet people and the<br />

pretzels are always a hit.”<br />

She uses a recipe from a Bavarian<br />

friend who is a baker.<br />

Halkhoree says the perfect pretzel is<br />

golden and crunchy on the outside buy<br />

soft on the inside.<br />

Mayor Sam Broughton said<br />

CultureFest is a high point of the year for<br />

the district.<br />

“CultureFest is such a fun and<br />

enjoyable time of the year, embracing the<br />

many different people that bring colour<br />

and life to our district. Over the years<br />

the community has really got behind the<br />

event and made it a great day out and it’s<br />

been good to see how people are enjoying<br />

the wider event series.”<br />

SLOWING DOWN: Making a conscious effort to reduce your speed slightly<br />

could result in avoiding a crash entirely.<br />

MANY FACTORS cause road crashes,<br />

but the impact speed during a collision<br />

is the primary factor determining your<br />

survival. It’s that simple.<br />

Over the last five years, 100 per cent of<br />

all fatalities in <strong>Selwyn</strong> occurred on roads<br />

with speed limits over 70km/h. This doesn’t<br />

mean that these crashes were caused by exceeding<br />

the speed limit, but in many cases,<br />

the speed at the point of impact was too<br />

great for the occupants to survive the crash.<br />

We often hear that our roads are unsafe<br />

for our children to get themselves to and<br />

from schools, but what speed do you actually<br />

drive past children? Remember they are<br />

speed limits, not speed targets. Roads are<br />

easier to cross if traffic is slower.<br />

adjust speed limits and educate, and the<br />

New Zealand Police can enforce; but ultimately<br />

for speeds to be reduced and made<br />

safe on our roads, you (as the driver) need to<br />

lift your right foot a fraction.<br />

Over the coming weeks, you will see information<br />

about the role speed plays in the<br />

road toll in <strong>Selwyn</strong> and how you can make a<br />

difference on our roads.<br />

Please take the time to learn how driving<br />

a little slower can make a significant difference<br />

to everyone’s chances of survival.<br />

The <strong>Selwyn</strong> District Speed Management<br />

Plan will be out for public consultation in<br />

October, and we encourage everyone to<br />

review it and provide feedback.<br />

Treat other road users like family and we<br />

all might stand a better chance of survival.<br />

Plan ahead, stay alert, slow down, drop<br />

back.<br />

TRADITION: MyBretze will be serving up traditional German pretzels at<br />

CultureFest, while 18 different cultural performances will be on stage.<br />
