Slower speeds save lives
Selwyn District Council
A CELEBRATION of the sounds,
flavours and sights from cultures around
the world will return to Lincoln Domain
on Sunday.
The first event in the annual three week
CultureFest festival runs from 10am to
2pm.
The popular free family event showcases
the district’s diversity with crowds of
about 3000 people set to enjoy interactive
activities, food and performances from
community groups and residents.
Stalls, featuring 28 different cultures
ranging from Bulgaria to Korea and
Nigeria to Japan, will be joined by performers
from 18 different cultures with
activities which everyone can have a go
at.
Among the stallholders returning this
year will be Yoruba South Island New
Zealand, a non-profit organisation dedicated
to promoting and preserving the
culture, welfare and human rights of the
Yoruba people from south-west Nigeria.
Yoruba general secretary Omotosho
Aina said its Selwyn members were
looking forward to sharing interactive activities,
such as tasting traditional cuisine
and learning basic Yoruba phrases. “We
are excited to connect with people from
different backgrounds and share the
vibrant culture of the Yoruba people,”
Aina said.
Katharina Halkhoree from MyBretzel
will also appear at CultureFest.
Halkhoree will be serving up traditional
German pretzels, baked fresh on
site.
“Last year was my first time at CultureFest
and it was a great day.
“People of all ages
were wanting to try authentic pretzels
for the first time or talk about their own
travels to Germany.
“It’s a good way to meet people and the
pretzels are always a hit.”
She uses a recipe from a Bavarian
friend who is a baker.
Halkhoree says the perfect pretzel is
golden and crunchy on the outside buy
soft on the inside.
Mayor Sam Broughton said
CultureFest is a high point of the year for
the district.
“CultureFest is such a fun and
enjoyable time of the year, embracing the
many different people that bring colour
and life to our district. Over the years
the community has really got behind the
event and made it a great day out and it’s
been good to see how people are enjoying
the wider event series.”
SLOWING DOWN: Making a conscious effort to reduce your speed slightly
could result in avoiding a crash entirely.
MANY FACTORS cause road crashes,
but the impact speed during a collision
is the primary factor determining your
survival. It’s that simple.
Over the last five years, 100 per cent of
all fatalities in Selwyn occurred on roads
with speed limits over 70km/h. This doesn’t
mean that these crashes were caused by exceeding
the speed limit, but in many cases,
the speed at the point of impact was too
great for the occupants to survive the crash.
We often hear that our roads are unsafe
for our children to get themselves to and
from schools, but what speed do you actually
drive past children? Remember they are
speed limits, not speed targets. Roads are
easier to cross if traffic is slower.
The council can build raised platforms,
adjust speed limits and educate, and the
New Zealand Police can enforce; but ultimately
for speeds to be reduced and made
safe on our roads, you (as the driver) need to
lift your right foot a fraction.
Over the coming weeks, you will see information
about the role speed plays in the
road toll in Selwyn and how you can make a
difference on our roads.
Please take the time to learn how driving
a little slower can make a significant difference
to everyone’s chances of survival.
The Selwyn District Speed Management
Plan will be out for public consultation in
October, and we encourage everyone to
review it and provide feedback.
Treat other road users like family and we
all might stand a better chance of survival.
Plan ahead, stay alert, slow down, drop
back.
TRADITION: MyBretze will be serving up traditional German pretzels at
CultureFest, while 18 different cultural performances will be on stage.
