Stand-out performances<br />
from Rolleston College and<br />
Darfield High at the South Island<br />
Secondary Schools tournament<br />
has seen them promoted to the A<br />
grade competition next year.<br />
Rolleston beat Darfield 30-18<br />
in the B grade final on Thursday<br />
after having unbeaten first<br />
rounds. The teams progressed<br />
to the final, with six wins each<br />
and both having drawn against<br />
Papanui High at the four-day<br />
tournament in Invercargill last<br />
week.<br />
The first quarter of the final<br />
between the two sides showcased<br />
impressive defence.<br />

Rush made immediate impact<br />
in the first 10 minutes of action,<br />
disrupting both attacking ends<br />
by gaining a large number of<br />
turnover ball.<br />

quarter to extend their 8-4 lead<br />

Despite a few turnovers by<br />
Darfield in the first quarter,<br />
Rolleston were able to take a<br />
seven-goal lead into the second<br />
half.<br />
Accurate shooting by<br />
Rolleston prevented Darfield<br />
from gaining much defensive<br />
ball, while Rolleston managed to<br />
continually build their lead to a<br />
30-18 win.<br />
Darfield also improved their<br />
seeding from eighth last year.<br />
As a result of finishing in the B<br />
grade’s top three, Rolleston and<br />
Darfield have qualified to play in<br />
the A grade next year.<br />
Izzy Hall (Rolleston), Kayla<br />
Holland (Darfield) and Kate<br />
Hefferon (Darfield) were selected<br />
in the B grade’s tournament<br />
team.<br />
Lincoln High maintained<br />
consistency by beating<br />
Hillmorton 31-8 to finish 11th.<br />
The team placed 12th at last<br />
year’s tournament and showed<br />
promising signs with three large<br />
wins to start the competition.<br />
With a 27-23 win against<br />
Queen Charlotte College,<br />
Ellesmere College also finished<br />
in 28th after being promoted to<br />
the B grade this year.<br />
