SELWYN’S young representative
netball side capped off a
promising season at the senior
whakataetae tournament in
Ashburton over the weekend.
The team were unable to
pick up a win at the two-day
tournament after coming up
against experienced South
Canterbury, Nelson and Mid
Canterbury sides.
But co-coach Amanda
Clarkson said they set the stage
for an exciting future.
“Despite facing three
losses, this young squad,
although lacking in height,
compensated with unwavering
determination and spirit on the
court,” she said.
“Unlike some of the
opposition, a majority of the
team doesn’t play together for
club netball so their ability
to come together, adapt and
demonstrate such impressive
growth on the court is a
testament to their natural ability
and determination to improve as
a team.”
A high-scoring 85-55 loss
to South Canterbury was
followed by a much-improved
performance against Nelson,
which Selwyn narrowly lost
54-53.

Shan Hunt said there
were some “beautiful
moments” against South
Canterbury, but their onegoal
thriller against Nelson
showcased their skills.
“We were cool and calm and
scored off our hard-earned
turnover ball,” Hunt said.
“The girls played highintensity
netball for 60min and
the game went down to the
wire.”
They finished with a 54-42 loss
to Mid Canterbury on Sunday.
Hunt said she was impressed
with the way the team built on
each game over the weekend.
“We are a developing side this
year, with one of our players
coming straight out of under-18
age groups and a handful of
players in their early 20s,” she
said.
