Redefining Chinese tourism: A new era of exploration
From digital engagement to depth-driven experiences:
Unraveling the future of Chinese travel
The Chinese travel industry, a giant in the global
tourism sector, is undergoing a transformative phase.
As the world emerges from the shadows of the
pandemic, industry leaders at ITB China, the nation's
premier travel trade show, shed light on the evolving
landscape of Chinese tourism.
THE DIGITAL SHIFT
In an industry where
precision and innovation
are key, digital platforms are
becoming indispensable tools
for engagement. Trip.com, a
household name in the travel
sector, is leading the charge
with initiatives like "Boss livestreaming."
This trend sees their
top executives, including CEOs
and senior leaders, hosting live
sessions to showcase travel
destinations, unveil exclusive
deals, and engage directly with
their audience. It's a testament
to the evolving dynamics of
customer interaction in the digital
age. Meanwhile, China Comfort
Travel Group (CCT) is diversifying
its digital presence by tapping
into platforms like TikTok and
Little Red Book, highlighting the
industry's move towards a multiplatform
engagement strategy.
BLENDING ONLINE
AND OFFLINE WORLDS
UTour, another major player in
tourism, is pioneering a hybrid
model, merging the digital with
the physical. While they've been
active on platforms like WeChat
and Micro-blog, they've also
reopened about 30 outlets in
Beijing. This blend of online
engagement with offline touch
points offers customers a holistic
travel experience.
THE EVOLVING
TRAVELER: SEEKING
DEPTH OVER BREADTH
2023 has witnessed a paradigm
shift in traveler preferences.
The era of superficial, checklist
tourism is waning. Today's
Chinese traveler is looking for
depth. Trip.com notes a surge in
demand for niche destinations,
with travelers preferring lesstrodden
paths over crowded
tourist hubs. CCT echoes this
sentiment, highlighting a shift
from larger tour groups to smaller,
more intimate ones. The modern
traveler is no longer content with
just scratching the surface; they
are seeking immersive, in-depth
experiences.
THE RISE OF LONG-
DURATION TRIPS
UTour points to another intriguing
trend: the resurgence of longduration
trips. Their data suggests
a pent-up wanderlust among
Chinese travelers, with 10-day
outbound trips seeing a surge
in bookings. This enthusiasm is
further evidenced by the rapid
selling out of their 121-day "U-Tour
Travel Around the World" cruise.
SPENDING PATTERNS:
QUALITY OVER
QUANTITY
Comparing the spending habits
of 2023 to pre-pandemic levels in
2019 reveals interesting insights.
While travel demand and duration
have seen an increase, there's a
clear emphasis on quality. Both
Trip.com and UTour note an
increase in average spending,
driven by travelers' heightened
expectations and demands for
premium experiences.
PEERING INTO THE
CRYSTAL BALL:
FUTURE TRENDS
So, what's on the horizon for
Chinese tourism? Trip.com
believes that travel themes
integrating cultural and sports
elements will dominate. They
predict a rise in destinations that
offer rich cultural experiences,
from marathons to music festivals.
UTour, on the other hand,
foresees a rise in customised
travel and season-based travel
products. The success of winter
tourism products post Beijing
Winter Olympics is a testament to
this trend
MEET THE EXPERTS
SHAPING THE FUTURE
OF CHINESE TRAVEL
ITB China, a cornerstone event for the global
travel industry, has always been a platform for
insights, innovations, and interactions. This
year, the spotlight shines on three distinguished
panelists, each a titan in their respective domains.
Zhang Xu, holding the esteemed position of Vice
President and GM of Government Cooperation
at Trip.com Group, brings to the table a wealth
of experience from one of China's leading online
travel agencies. His insights, drawn from Trip.com's
vast customer base and innovative strategies, look
into the evolving preferences of Chinese travelers.
Zhang Lei, the Senior Vice President of Utour
Group Co.,Ltd, represents a brand that has
seamlessly blended the online and offline worlds
of travel. With Utour's pioneering approach and
expansive reach, Zhang Lei's perspectives offer a
holistic view of the current travel landscape.
Lastly, Shang Zhengzheng, the Director
of Outbound Department at China Comfort
Travel (CCT) Group provides a unique lens into
outbound tourism from China. With CCT's diverse
travel offerings and keen market understanding,
Shang's contributions shed light on the global
aspirations of Chinese tourists.
Together, these experts decode the intricacies
of the Chinese travel market, offering invaluable
insights for global destinations and travel
suppliers. Their combined expertise, backed by
data-driven insights, chart the course for aligning
with the dynamic trends of the Chinese travel
sector
the evolving trends in
the travel sector.
With the resurgence of international
travel, Asian travelers' preferences have
shifted. There's a noticeable inclination
towards non-urban destinations, longer
stays, and a tech-centric approach
led by Gen Z and Gen Y. Trip.com's
witnessing significant growth. The
company has also observed a rising
demand for sustainable travel, with
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Saudi Arabia's tourism horizon: Exclusive interview
with Alhasan Aldabbagh on Vision 2030 and
strengthening ties with the Chinese market
As Saudi Arabia charts its ambitious Vision 2030 tourism blueprint, its focus on the Chinese
market is unmistakable. In an exclusive interview with ITB China News, Alhasan Aldabbagh,
President-APAC of the Saudi Tourism Authority, discusses this strategic alignment and the
nation's transformative projects
Considering Saudi Arabia's Vision
2030 plan, how does the Chinese
market fit into this long-term tourism
strategy?
Saudi Arabia is deeply committed to
the Chinese market with an aspiration
to host 5 million Chinese visitors by
2030. Recognising China's stature
as an economic giant, we identify
a significant potential for tourism
expansion. ITB China emerges as an
invaluable platform for us, allowing us
to introduce our latest initiatives that
promise a delightful travel experience
for Chinese tourists. Through our
continuous efforts and customised
strategies, we envision Saudi Arabia
evolving as a top choice for Chinese
travelers.
What steps has Saudi Arabia taken
to cater to Chinese tourists?
Saudi Arabia has been diligently
enhancing its accessibility and
connectivity to resonate with Chinese
visitors. Our official tourism website,
VisitSaudi.cn, is now Mandarincompatible,
and the Riyadh Airport
has been updated with Mandarin
signages. The website is also now
accessible in Mandarin. We're
channeling resources into training our
tour guides in Mandarin to ensure a
more immersive experience for our
guests. Our engagement with Chinese
tourists is also amplified through our
presence on popular social media
platforms like WeChat, Weibo, and
Xiao Hong Shu. To cater to the specific
needs of Chinese travelers, we've
established a dedicated hotline, 400-
661-2480, and have incorporated
Union Pay across our major tourist
destinations. On the connectivity front,
Saudi Arabia has welcomed China into
its expedited 3-minute e-visa program.
Chinese tourists flying via SAUDIA
can now enjoy a complimentary hotel
stay courtesy of our 96-hour Stopover
Visa program. Furthermore, we're
actively collaborating with airlines to
amplify direct routes and augment
flight frequencies. It's worth noting
that SAUDIA has recently initiated
direct flights connecting Jeddah-
Beijing and Riyadh-Beijing, and we're
optimistic about introducing flights
from Shanghai in the foreseeable
future.
Saudi Arabia has announced several
mega projects as part of its tourism
and infrastructure development.
Can you provide an update on the
progress of these?
Saudi Arabia is pioneering some of
the world's most visionary tourism
projects. The $500 billion NEOM city,
envisioned to be entirely powered by
renewable energy, and the Red Sea
Project, a luxury tourism initiative
spanning several islands, stand as
testimonies to our ambition. The Red
Sea Project is on a swift trajectory, with
the first phase slated for completion
by 2023, encompassing 16 hotels.
Esteemed brands like Ritz Carlton
Reserve, Four Seasons Hotels, and
Rosewood have already partnered
with us. NEOM is prepping to launch
Sindalah in early 2024, which will
feature 9 golf courses and 469 rooms.
Diriyah, backed by a $63.2 billion
masterplan, is poised to become a
global cultural epicentre by 2030, with
partnerships from 38 hotel brands.
Al Ula, which houses the UNESCO
World Heritage site of Hegra, recently
celebrated the opening of Banyan
Tree in 2022 and is gearing up for the
inauguration of Wadi AlFann, Valley
of the Arts, in 2024. Cruise Saudi
envisions a metamorphosis of our
coastline into a sustainable tourist
paradise, with a target of 1.3 million
cruise passenger visits by 2035.
As the official partner destination at
ITB China this year, how significant
is this platform for Saudi Arabia in
promoting its tourism offerings?
The bond between Saudi Arabia and
China has been strengthening over
the years, and our association as
an official destination partner at ITB
China is a reflection of this robust
relationship. ITB China presents us
with a golden opportunity to reiterate
our commitment to the Chinese
market and spotlight our objective
of hosting 5 million Chinese visitors
as part of our Vision 2030. Our
delegation is keenly looking forward
to forging deeper connections with
local partners and underscoring our
dedication and tailored initiatives for
the Chinese audience.
What will Saudi Arabia be
highlighting at its stand at ITB China
this year?
Attendees can anticipate a vivid
portrayal of Saudi Arabia's untouched
natural vistas, its profound cultural
legacy, and the legendary Arabian
hospitality. Our booth will shed light
on our relentless endeavours to
elevate awareness about our nation
and to acquaint trade partners with
our offerings meticulously crafted
for Chinese tourists. Key attractions
encompass collaborative marketing
campaigns with premier trade
partners, a suite of over 80 products
tailored for Chinese tourists, the
unveiling of new SAUDIA routes, our
expedited e-visa program, the 96-hour
Stopover Visa initiative, the Mandarinadapted
VisitSaudi.cn portal, and the
rollout of Union Pay across our prime
tourist landmarks
NEOM:
SUSTAINABLE
LUXURY
Saudi Arabia's groundbreaking
NEOM city, underpinned by a
massive $500 billion investment,
is shaping up to be the epitome of
sustainable luxury on a global scale.
Entirely harnessed by renewable
energy, the city's next big unveil,
the Sindalah sector, is slated for a
2024 debut. It promises 9 worldclass
golf courses and 469 opulent
rooms, setting new standards
in luxury. As the world keenly
watches, this ambitious project not
only underscores Saudi Arabia's
commitment to sustainable luxury
tourism while positioning the nation
as a trailblazer in harmonizing
environmental consciousness with
unparalleled opulence in the tourism
sector
Tahiti tourism highlights
sustainable vision and
diverse offerings at ITB China
Fāri’ira’a Manihini (FM27) Initiative and
the rich tapestry of Tahitian experiences
take centre stage
At ITB China this year, Tahiti Tourism showcases its
commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism through
the Fāri’ira’a Manihini (FM27) campaign, while also inviting
attendees to explore the multifaceted attractions of Tahiti and
its islands.
Tahiti's tourist board is making waves
at ITB China, not just with its innovative
Fāri’ira’a Manihini (FM27) campaign
but also by showcasing the diverse
tourism experiences the islands have
to offer. Jean-Marc Mocellin, the Chief
Executive of Tahiti Tourism, emphasises
the importance of sustainable and
quality-driven tourism, setting sights
on attracting 280,000 tourists by 2027.
This initiative, born from collaboration
with the local community and tourism
stakeholders, aims to strike a balance
between preserving Tahiti's natural
and cultural heritage while ensuring
economic growth for its residents.
To illustrate the ethos behind the
campaign, a dual video series has been
launched. The first, “On the Road to
Inclusive and Sustainable Tourism in
Tahiti and Its Islands,” provides insights
from industry professionals on the
FM27 approach. The second, animated
by the character Hina, offers an
educational perspective, spotlighting
the various benefits of the FM27
initiatives across economic, cultural,
and environmental dimensions.
However, the Fāri’ira’a Manihini (FM27)
campaign is just one facet of Tahiti's
presentation at ITB China. Attendees
visiting their exhibition space will not
only gain insights into this sustainable
vision, but also have the opportunity
to immerse themselves in the broader
Welcome back to NYC:
The revival of Chinese group
travel to the US
The resurgence of group tours from
China to the US indicates notable
progress in the tourism industry's path
to recovery. While hopes remain for
a complete rebound in air travel, this
advancement represents a crucial
step towards the market's full revival.
As NYC Tourism + Conventions gears
up for in-person events in China,
there's a tangible wave of enthusiasm
and confidence in the sector. The
In the first half of 2023, Ras Al Khaimah
honed in on the burgeoning MICE market,
marking a strategic diversification. This
shift resulted in a 26% rise in MICE room
nights compared to 2022, driven by
attracting international incentive groups
for extended stays, in contrast to shorter
local corporate visits. The Emirate hosted
notable events from January to June,
including the RAK Half Marathon and
the Exotic Wedding Planning Conference
(EWPC).
Using the EWPC as a springboard, Ras
Al Khaimah is introducing a Wedding
Certification Programme, aiming to
streamline wedding planning in the
region. This initiative has led to a 300%
revenue surge from weddings in H1,
with growth anticipated to continue
synergy between travel trade experts
and event organisers is essential
right now. Together, they play a key
role in strengthening NYC's premier
status on the market. To highlight the
importance of this, New York City
hosted over a million Chinese visitors
in 2019.
This encouraging change in the travel
scene is bringing renewed optimism
for all involved parties
Ras Al Khaimah's strategic
pivot: MICE market growth and
wedding innovations
post-programme launch in September.
Certified planners will enjoy simplified
licensing, event organisation, and support
from affiliated hotels through an e-portal.
They'll also gain insights into the UAE's
marriage procedures, expedited permits,
and a curated list of venues, ensuring
compliance with local norms. This unique
approach offers unmatched ease for
planners and couples
alike. Additionally,
Ras Al Khaimah
Tourism Development
Authority unveiled
enticing incentive
packages for couples,
planners, and venues,
further enhancing the
Emirate's appeal for the
