Young photographer wins award for
• By Daniel Alvey
FOR ANGIE Early, one of her
favourite things is to get out on
the farm and take photos.
That interest has earned the
18-year-old Darfield High School
student the People’s Choice
Award in the IHC Capture the
Moment Photo competition.
Her photo ‘Dad’s Farm Toys,’
was of a hay rake in the sun.
Angie got into the 28 finalists
and went on to win the award
with 627 votes.
This year the theme of the
competition was ‘your Aotearoa,
New Zealand’ and received
entries from across the country.
Mum Christine said it has
been a very exciting time for
Angie who is non-verbal due to
her down syndrome and autism.
Angie has been developing her
photography as a new skill.
“Angie likes going out on the
farm and enjoys using her iPad
to take lots of photos.
“She likes going out on the
tractor with her dad (Nelson)
and on the harvester or the
motorbike,” she said.
Christine said it has been
amazing to see the community
get behind Angie and support
her with votes.
“It was so kind of everyone to
vote for her.”
As a result of winning the
WINNER: Angie Early’s photo ‘Dad’s Farm Toys’ won the People’s Choice Award in IHC’s photo competition.
award, Angie received $1500.
Christine said the money will
likely be used to take Angie on
a cruise ship around the Pacific
next year.
“She’s never been in a plane,
never been on a cruise. It will be
amazing for her.”
Angie’s photo, along with the
other finalists, will be on display
at the FOTO FEST Exhibition in
Hastings from September 15-25.
Her photo is also up for sale,
along with the other winners,
with all the money being
returned to the photographers.
