Located 10 minutes’ drive west of
Christchurch, the small town of West
Melton has several ‘claims to fame’. It has
long been a key breeding and training
ground for standard-bred racehorses,
historically it was an important area for
farming of sheep, grains and potatoes,
and over recent years it has seen the
establishment of vineyards, as well as nut
and olive growing.
Over the last decade or so, the
population has increased following the
development of several sub-divisions.
Residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle,
although a number commute to
Christchurch for work, while local events
and activities provide opportunities for
people to get together in their leisure time.
