Southbridge UK tour off to flying start
• By Jaime Cunningham
MOMENTUM will be on
Southbridge’s side when they
meet Northern Ireland’s City of
Armagh in the second match
of their United Kingdom tour
today.
Southbridge started their tour
with a convincing 60-19 win
over London’s Sidcup last week.
Coach Tom Turner said he was
happy with how Southbridge
showcased New Zealand
running rugby against Sidcup.
“As a coaching group, we
gave them the license to express
themselves and have a go at
something they usually may
not have tried, so took a lot of
confidence out of that,” he said.
“Energy was really high,
after five days in the country
and seeing the sites, the group
was able to flick the switch and
concentrate on what we were
here for which was to represent
ourselves, our community and
sponsors and our country which
the group did really well.”
Iain Wilson, who played for
Southbridge in the early 2000s,
presented the team’s jerseys the
evening before their match.
A dominant second half saw
Southbridge ease to a win in
the senior side’s first game since
losing the Ellesmere division 1
semi-final to Waihora 16-15
STRONG: A dominant second half sealed a 60-19 win for Southbridge in the first match of their United Kingdom tour
against London’s Sidcup.
in July.
After leading 17-5 at halftime,
seven tries to Southbridge
followed in the second half with
Jone Taufaga and Jack Johnston
claiming 12 and 11-point hauls
respectively.
Adam Stone, Josh Kewish,
Sam Scott and Boston Horn also
managed to dot down in the
second 40.
Lock Issy Fine was presented
a ‘boom’ award for delivering
the biggest hit of the game
in front of a large crowd of
both Southbridge and Sidcup
supporters.
Turner said there were no
major differences between the
two teams’ styles of play.
“They came out to play just as
much as we did, as I’m sure they
were wanting to showcase their
skills as well,” he said.
SUPPORT: Sisters Ella Stokes (left)
and Katy Carnochan, with son Henry,
supporting their partners, players
Morgan Hunt and Scott Carnochan.
“We’re looking forward to the
next battles against the City of
Armagh and Melrose.”
Southbridge were due to take
