28 By Mathias Valles GET TO KNOW GRAN CANARIA I CONOCE GRAN CANARIA EDICIÓN 31 Discovering Playa de Amadores, a treasure of sun and sand On numerous occasions in this magazine we try to emphasise that this island offers a rich diversity of experiences that go beyond the coast. We invite travellers to explore its cultural richness, its diverse natural landscape and the wide range of activities that can captivate all those seeking an enriching, natural and multifaceted trip. But we must not forget that most visitors inevitably associate this wonderful location in the centre of the Canary archipelago with a dream destination, where radiant sunshine and golden sandy beaches are the main attractions that make Gran Canaria the preferred choice for anyone seeking relaxation in a warm climate. So, on this occasion we are going to highlight the typical side of the island's sun and beach holiday model. Among the coastal pearls of Gran Canaria is Playa de Amadores, an idyllic spot that truly lives up to its name. Playa de Amadores is a relatively new man-made oasis dating back to the late 1990s. It was meticulously created to provide an environment for family enjoyment. Its construction involved the removal of significant rock formations that obstructed the sea inlet, as its location was at the mouth of the Amadores ravine. The challenge was to transform it into a magnificent natural pool sheltered from the strong waves by two robust sections of concrete breakwater. This makes it, as we will see below, an ideal destination for users of all ages. The hard work did not stop there, as thousands of tons of fine sand were the brought in to cover its surface area and shape a beach that stands out for its geometric semicircular bay and clear waters stretching over golden sand. This sand perfectly reflects and enhances the natural hues of the water, creating a palette of colours ranging from green tones to crystalline blue shades. This visual phenomenon makes this coastal spot a true paradise for lovers of scenic beauty. For almost 20 years now it has flaunted the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that guarantees good quality facilities, cleanliness, access adapted for people with limited mobility, a lifeguard service, ecological preservation, showers, toilets and multiple services that make this 800-metre long beach an ideal place for family tourism. Smoking is not allowed on the beach, nor is playing with a ball or music, but there are plenty of alternatives on Amadores Beach. Visitors can go scuba diving, take pedal boat rides or go to the Fun Park, a small water park with air mattresses, bouncy castles and trampolines that will provide families with everything they need to enjoy a different and fun day at the beach. Without over-worrying about fatigue caused by lack of proper nutrition and ensuring that we maintain optimal energy levels during our day in Amadores, it is essential to watch our diet. Fortunately, the area around this beautiful location offers a wide choice of culinary options to satisfy diverse palates. These range from restaurants specialising in Spanish gastronomy, to those offering Italian and Asian delicacies. All of these establishments are within walking distance, ensuring a diverse and quality dining experience, ensuring that everyone can continue to fully enjoy their activities. To further enrich visitors’ experience, a promenade of approximately one kilometre connects Playa de Amadores with Playa de Puerto Rico, another of the island's outstanding beach areas that is popular with tourists and local residents alike. This promenade offers the opportunity to enjoy a variety of coastal scenery, including panoramic views of Tenerife's towering Teide mountain on clear days, especially at nightfall as the sun sets. Playa de Amadores is strategically located in the south of Gran Canaria, offering a wide variety of accommodation options located in the surrounding area. Not only is it an ideal base from which to explore a wealth of nearby attractions, it also offers a vibrant and attractive nightlife. Nearby, Puerto Rico lights up with its lively nightlife scene, with bars, clubs and restaurants staying open until the early hours of the morning. In addition, the modern and relatively new Mogan Mall shopping centre, with its eye-catching water fountain and lights and its large selection of popular shops and restaurants, adds a modern and sophisticated touch to a very popular meeting point in the area. Amadores beach offers not only natural beauty and charm, but also a complete experience that provides a perfect combination of relaxation, shopping and entertainment to suit the tastes of all travellers.
