Welcome to your Autumn issue
of Whitchurch and Llandaff
Living.
Compared to last year, our
summer this year was a bit of a
non-event. Even so, that hasn't
stopped the dramatic onset of
autumn - and all its glorious
colours and textures. So to start
our celebration of the autumn
season, we're publishing a
collection of seasonal poems
from local poets.
It's this time of year that we
often feel like hibernating. But
is it humanely possible? We
look to answer that question
and provide some practical
alternatives to achieving some
sense of contentment.
Keeping warm is one of our
priorities as we hurtle towards
winter so we've hand-picked
some bits and bobs on our
centre pages that can keep you
toasty.
The garden is one place where
some take solace but even as
life seems to fade with the light,
there's plenty to do to prepare
our green spaces for the cold
season and beyond into next
year. We're here to give you
some guidance. You'll also find
our gardens and parks littered
with seed pods that have fallen
from the trees. And if you've ever
wondered what trees they are,
we've got a handy guide to help
you out.
We're also got some wonderful
local features thanks to our
readers. Awen's Nigel Lewis
charts the history of the
Vachells, one of Cardiff's most
prominent family names.
Madalena Juma has also been
to speak to the members of
Forks and Trowels, a community
gardening group in Llandaff
North.
Further afield, there's the
history of Taff's Well and we also
have a special feature about the
Holm Islands, the two lumps of
land out in the Bristol Channel.
They may look deserted but
they possess both an interesting
past and a multitude of natural
wonder.
We take a whistle stop tour
of some finest mansions in
South Wales and coming full
circle back to home, we've
put together some wonderful
autumn recipes for you to enjoy.
Finally, we sign off with a short
story from award-winning author
(and Whitchurch and Llandaff
Living co-editor) Patric Morgan.
