An
A-Z
of autumn
According to Keats, autumn is a season of mists mellow fruitfulness, It's
also a season of raincoats and spiders. Here's our A-Z
Apple pie
Warm apple pie. That sweet,
cinnamon-spiced apple filling
encased in a flaky pastry crust. Is
there anything more satisfying on a
cold autumn evening?
Bonfires
These are the traditional autumn
events that some gardeners like
to undertake to ruin everyone
else's washing. They come without
warning and depending on which
way the wind is blowing, it could
mean the difference between
having clean underwear for the
week ahead or not.
46
Conkers
It's usually schoolboys who scoop
up these little brown jewels from
the pavements and pathways
and take them home to nurture
them. It's then a case of scientific
experimentation - do you bake
them in the oven, soak them in
vinegar or listen to what two times
World Conker Champion Charlie
Bray advises and that's passing the
conker through a pig, where it will
harden by soaking in its stomach
juices?
Daylight savings
This is when the clocks go back an
hour and we all get an extra hour's
sleep. Unless you have a
pet or young children who
are still stuck on British
Summer Time.
Easter eggs
Mark our words. These
will be in the shops by
the time you've picked up
your Christmas turkey.
Fleece
The classic keep-warm
garment. Extra marks if
you happen to get one with a huge
picture of a wolf on the back of
yours.
Ghost stories
This time of year is often associated
with stories of ghosts, ghouls, and
the living dead. It also happens to
be conference season for the big
political parties. Coincidence much?
Harvest
'Don't judge each day by the
harvest you reap but by the seeds
that you plant.' So wrote Robert
Louis Stevenson once. Obviously
never heard of MiracleGro.
Indoors
One minute, we're sitting in our
garden, enjoying our Pimms. The
next, we're putting the heating
on and moaning about the price
of energy. Let's face it though -
indoors is the place to be at this
time of year.
Jam
Head to any village fête or bazaar
at this time of year and you'll see a
table brimming with jams. They're
usually made by Ethel from 'down
the club' and they'll have their lids
