Inset – the Rosenbauer Panther. WITH LESS than an hour to go before the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade 150th anniversary weekend kicked off, the siren sounded. Thankfully, it was nothing serious – just a reminder that the celebrations could get interrupted at any time. Thankfully again, that didn’t happen and the weekend was a wonderful gathering of old friends, with lots of laughter, emotion and some seriously impressive firefighting firepower on display. First through the tunnel was the monster Rosenbauer Panther, a long way from home at Christchurch International Airport. It joined five fire appliances from Christchurch and Lyttelton, along with two old timers from Ferrymead’s Hall of Flame Museum – the 1938 Dennis Light Six and 1946 Ford V8, both of which saw action at the Ballantynes fire in 1947. Lyttelton’s youngest brigade members Heath Carswell, Caleb Pool and Connor Buckley modelled old fire brigade uniforms that were obsolete before they were even born. On Saturday, more than 170 packed the marquee on the station forecourt for the grand celebration dinner and awards evening. Sunday morning was a much quieter and very moving period for reflection and remembrance, with thanks to Neil Struthers and bagpiper Craig Gibson. By the time the farewell barbecue ended on Sunday afternoon the general consensus was a score of 10 out of 10 for the whole weekend. Then, wouldn’t you know it, with impeccable timing, at 7.20am Monday morning, the siren sounded again. As the fire truck headed out the door the rest of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade crew got stuck into the station clean up. Bring on the next 150 years.
