This one-of-a-kind creation, brought to life by Delaney Davidson, was originally given to McGlashan by sound engineer Arran Eley while touring in Lyttelton. This chance encounter sparked a heart-warming journey that has become a symbol of camaraderie and creativity. As Don and his trusty heater embarked on the Take It To The Bridge tour of handpicked venues across the country, the unassuming appliance became more than just a source of warmth. It transformed into a cherished mascot, accompanying Don to Karamea, Barrytown, Golden Bay, Dunedin, and Glenorchy. He even documented the heater’s adventures, sharing photos with Eley and Davidson back in Lyttelton. The little heater had taken on a life of its own, becoming a beloved member of the tour. Having completed its musical odyssey, Davidson, in a gesture of artistic generosity, hand-painted the heater, transforming it into a unique piece of art. It will take centre stage at the Peninsula Art Auction’s Gala Evening event in Lyttelton on Sunday. HOOTER: Don McGlashan’s redecorated heater will be up for auction on Sunday. Bill Hammond donated to art IF YOU’D like a Bill Hammond in your art collection and don’t have a spare $1.75m, you’ll want to be at the biennial Peninsula Art Auction this weekend in Lyttelton. The auction, of which Hammond was a long-time benefactor, was first held in 2005 in the late artist’s hometown and is organised by the Lyttelton Education Charitable Trust. In 2019 and 2017, original Bill Hammond works went under the hammer for under $10,000. This year, Bill Hammond’s widow Jane has generously donated a 2007 etching Bone Eagle C, with price expectations of anywhere from $4000. The Peninsula Art Auction is a collaboration of local artists, Lyttelton Primary School and local businesses, making this year’s auction a community effort. The most recent auction in 2019 raised over $40,000 for the primary school and the team are looking forward to bringing the auction back after its hiatus GENEROUS: Hammond’s Bone Eagle C is expected to fetch upwards of $4000. due to Covid. Beehre, Ben Reid, Mark Whyte, Scott Jackson, and the late Llew Summers’ son Dan Summers. Kim Hickford, a spokesperson from the Peninsula Art Auction organising team, said it was a joy to see creatives being brought together for a good cause. “I love the cyclical nature of the event this year,” she said. “Some of the kids who have benefited from the funds raised in the past are now exhibiting right next to Bill Hammond, including his granddaughter, Akilah.” Up to 200 works, including Let’s pick a path Water & coast Climate action Land use & biodiversity paintings, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, and photography, will be exhibited with a silent auction, running across the weekend at a contemporary ‘pop-up’ gallery at Lyttelton Primary School. Twenty premium works will be auctioned live by Shay Horay at a gala evening on Sunday at the school in what is expected to be a sell-out event. Tjalling de Vries to hold Take Root exhibition IN TAKE Root, Tjalling de Vries connects with the Banks Peninsula environment in which he was raised, from his current home of Lyttelton. Born in the Netherlands, de Vries grew up on Banks Peninsula and attended Canterbury University’s Ilam School of Fine Arts. For this solo exhibition, which runs from November 3-26 at Stoddart Cottage, de Vries has expanded his creative practice to produce a series of woodblock prints of trees that are native to Banks Peninsula. The exhibition also includes a hand-printed book made in collaboration with the poet and playwright Pohlen Newbery, and printer and curator Peter Vangioni. Newbery wrote the text in te reo Māori, and Vangioni printed the words on his letterpress with two of de Vries’ woodblock prints alongside. Said de Vries: “I feel it is pleasantly fitting to exhibit these works at Stoddart Cottage considering the legacy of Margaret Stoddart’s botanical INSPIRED BY NATURE: Akaeke on woodblock by Tjalling de Vries will be on display as part of the exhibition. work and interest.” Tjalling’s practice traverses a range of media and thematic concerns, often with a particular interest in spacial and multisensory experiences, as well as the simple art of picture making.
