The Boosters have also set up a general GoFundMe page ( https://gofund.me/c231ffb9 ) and the Band’s Director, Matt Ingelson, has been applying for local scholarships to benefit individual students with acute financial need and particular musical abilities. Ingelson says, “Research shows that exposure and travel to international countries in the context of education supports higher grade point averages, graduation rates, and all around academic success for under-represented students who embark on them. Ultimately this is important because students who would traditionally be unable to travel out of the country will return to Palm Springs with a wider world perspective. This can only benefit our community after they graduate and begin participating in our local economy.” Anyone looking for a sign of hope and promise for the future can shine a spotlight on this: After a 5 year gap due to the pandemic, the Palm Springs High School “Spirit of the Sands” Band and Visual Corps is set to perform internationally - this time in Spain. This will be the 11th tour in 25 years of the Band’s history. The Spring 2024 itinerary will send Palm Springs High School instrumentalists and visual corps members to the friendly European country with stops to perform in Valencia, Madrid, and Grenada. The opportunities for cross-cultural exchange will be plentiful, and the tour program’s musical lineup reflects the Band’s desire to share the rich tradition of SoCal sights, sounds and culture. The Band will soon begin practicing works from Arturo Marquez, Steven Bryant, Oja Gjeilo, and Jaime Texidor and applying for their passports immediately following football season. The hope is to provide a complete experience for the audiences in Spain by covering the expenses of as many Band members as possible, the cost per student being $3,600. Every contribution is tax deductible as the Band and Corps are a registered 501(c)3 non-profit. Over 25 years, the Palm Springs High School “Spirit of the Sands” Marching Band and Visual Corps has sought to curate the highest levels of holistic and artistic music education with an emphasis on elevating the community of Palm Springs at large. Among other accolades, the Band was a recipient of the Grammy Foundation’s Signature School Community Award, was the first High School band to ever march in a Pride Parade and performed at President Barack Obama’s 2013 Inauguration.
