The Movie Column By guest columnist Will Rodebaugh, III The tossed salads and scrambled eggs are “calling again” after 19 years. The iconic show Frasier is back with star Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane, a celebrity psychotherapist who gives people wisdom but does not always have answers for himself. For 11 seasons (1993-2004) the original, a spinoff from the long-running sitcom Cheers, offered memorable TV moments. One favorite is when Frasier’s brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), comes to a Halloween party dressed as their father, Martin (John Mahoney). At the party, laughs ultimately go fascinatingly serious for a moment before springing back to humor. Who can forget when Frasier tried to create a theme song for his radio show, and it ended up being a two-minute opera complete with a full orchestra? Or the time when Frasier is determined to win chess against his father Martin, a more rough-and-tumble character. In Frasier 2023, Frasier is the only character from the original series to appear. Other stars from the original will return in an episode or two, but for now the rest the cast is all new — or is it. Frasier’s son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), factors in more in the new show. He essentially takes the blue-collar place of the Martin character, having dropped out of Harvard and begun work as a firefighter. Niles and wife Daphne (Jane Leeves) are not in the show; however, their son, David (Anders Keith), joins Uncle Frasier as the two return to Boston. David has a striking resem- blance to Niles, so it’s like those characters never left. In the new series, Frasier returns to Boston after a celebrity career on television (we catch glimpses of this only in flashbacks, which are hilarious). His goal is to give a guest lecture in the class of his close friend from Harvard Alan Cornwall (Nicholas Lyndhurst). While in town, he checks on Freddy. Sure, the reunion is tenuous, but Frasier tries his best to help his son work through some issues he’s having — whether Freddy wants it or not. This reboot perfectly reminds us that when we feel overwhelmed by the challenges of the world there should always be someone we can lean on. When some of those people aren’t there anymore, others can easily take their place. Martin living on through his grandson, Freddy, or Niles through his son David are completely organic… sometimes, family members have uncanny resemblances! This reboot so far has painted a beautiful story of characters reuniting and working out their differences — like family. November 9, 2023 EXIT ZERO Page 37
