Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,<br />

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent<br />

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on<br />

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked<br />

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served<br />

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.<br />

The place: This week we’re highlighting where we’re drinking and<br />

we spent a few hours at Nauti Spirits Distillery last week. Their tasting<br />

room is at the end of their long gravel driveway off Shunpike Road. We<br />

were lucky, and you may be too depending on the time of year, to see<br />

the large field of sunflowers on your left — perfect spot to snap photos.<br />

The vibe: It was a Wednesday, so it wasn’t too busy, but the weather<br />

was beautiful, and Courtney, Kayla and Nicole grabbed a few chairs<br />

around a firepit. There were a couple of picnic tables filled with teachers<br />

having an afternoon out with pumpkin painting and team bonding.<br />

They purchased their pumpkins from the large bin that Nauti offers<br />

with a variety of sizes, another great spot to grab your gourds for the<br />

season. There were a couple of other firepits lit through the outdoor<br />

area, so as it got later, and chillier, we opted to light ours to keep warm<br />

for the remainder of the night. We brought some snacks to much on —<br />

Nauti doesn’t serve food so make sure to bring your own. Matt’s Family<br />

Food Truck is, however, there on weekends serving some delicious BBQ<br />

and some other tasty bites (Fri 4-8pm, Sat 1-8pm and Sun 1-6pm).<br />

The drinks: Nicole started with a Delaware Bay Breeze, her usual<br />

anytime she visit Nauti, with pineapple, cranberry, lime and Nauti<br />

vodka. Courtney and Kayla went for something spicy with the Sizzle<br />

Berry — Nauti’s jalapeno vodka with strawberry puree, ginger, lemon<br />

and club soda with a Tajin rim. Everyone went back for a second round<br />

but switched it up. We couldn’t pass up on the seasonal NO. 8 Cider —<br />

plundered #8 whiskey, spiced apple cider, orange and lemon. This was<br />

the afternoon’s highlight for sure, and we wished this wasn’t just a seasonal<br />

cocktail. I guess we’ll just have to make time to visit again before<br />

it’s gone, and you should, too!<br />

The takeaway: Nauti Spirits is open from 12pm Thursday-Sunday<br />

and from 2pm Monday-Wednesday. They have some fun events coming<br />

up including their Holiday Sip & Shop on November 25. Keep an eye<br />

on their socials to learn more about who’s participating!

The Northern Hemisphere is slipping<br />

inexorably into winter. Birds<br />

are nature’s heralds, and bringing a<br />

bird watcher is to be a witness and<br />

participant. Being familiar with the<br />

seasonal slide into winter, wife Linda and I<br />

take the pulse of that slide by what we see and<br />

don’t see. She took the hummingbird feeder<br />

down because she hadn’t seen one in a week.<br />

Neither have I, but western strays are possible<br />

through November.<br />

But Linda and I are most interested in<br />

the normal order of things, not the odd-ball<br />

occurrence. To us nature is affirming and confirming.<br />

Something to turn to and count on<br />

when the rest of the world is going all to hell.<br />

Republicans in Congress can’t govern?<br />

Middle East erupts in horror, the natural<br />

world can be counted upon to be business as<br />

usual, an affirming picture of calm in a gallery<br />

of chaos. On the river Ring-billed Gulls now<br />

outnumber Laughing gulls. It’s the changing<br />

of the guard as summer gulls leave and winter<br />

gulls arrive.<br />

Yesterday morning a dozen Black Ducks<br />

were heading upriver to feed just as one thousand<br />

Fish Crows were heading south out of<br />

their roost. This is our typical winter pattern<br />

and it is unfolding punctually. Any day now,<br />

White-throated Sparrows will flood our yard.<br />

This, too, is predictable and affirming.<br />

Birders are never out of step with the universe.<br />

No matter how crazy the world gets, all<br />

I need to do is take a walk, drink in the sights<br />

and sounds of the season and I am anchored.<br />

On 9-11 I was leading a birding workshop<br />

in Cape May. The morning after the<br />

towers fell, I met my group at Cape May Point<br />

State Park. Ten Americans away from home<br />

in shock over the attack upon our values and<br />

our soil. Donning the mantle of leader, I said:<br />

“I know we’re all hurting this morning,<br />

but whenever my life takes a hit, I turn to the<br />

natural world for solace. I suggest we do it,<br />

let nature do her job.” So we started down the<br />

trails. It didn’t solve the world’s troubles, but<br />

it soothed us.<br />

No matter how confused the human<br />

world gets, nature can be counted upon to<br />

offer an antidote to human travail.<br />

The government shuts down? The leaves<br />

fall anyway. Nature doesn’t go on strike —<br />

hawks will continue to migrate past the hawk<br />

watch all through November just as they do<br />

every fall. It is comforting and affirming.<br />

So, yes, the hummingbirds have gone.<br />

Bad news? No, just the opposite. The universe<br />

is right on schedule.<br />

The Movie Column<br />

The tossed salads and scrambled eggs<br />

are “calling again” after 19 years. The<br />

iconic show Frasier is back with star<br />

Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane,<br />

a celebrity psychotherapist who<br />

gives people wisdom but does not always<br />

have answers for himself. For 11 seasons<br />

(1993-2004) the original, a spinoff from the<br />

long-running sitcom Cheers, offered memorable<br />

TV moments. One favorite is when<br />

Frasier’s brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce),<br />

comes to a Halloween party dressed as their<br />

father, Martin (John Mahoney). At the party,<br />

laughs ultimately go fascinatingly serious for<br />

a moment before springing back to humor.<br />

Who can forget when Frasier tried to create<br />

a theme song for his radio show, and it<br />

ended up being a two-minute opera complete<br />

with a full orchestra? Or the time when Frasier<br />

is determined to win chess against his father<br />

Martin, a more rough-and-tumble character.<br />

In Frasier 2023, Frasier is the only character<br />

from the original series to appear. Other<br />

stars from the original will return in an episode<br />

or two, but for now the rest the cast<br />

is all new — or is it. Frasier’s son, Freddy<br />

(Jack Cutmore-Scott), factors in more in the<br />

new show. He essentially takes the blue-collar<br />

place of the Martin character, having dropped<br />

out of Harvard and begun work as a firefighter.<br />

Niles and wife Daphne (Jane Leeves)<br />

are not in the show; however, their son, David<br />

(Anders Keith), joins Uncle Frasier as the two<br />

return to Boston. David has a striking resem-<br />

blance to Niles, so it’s like those characters<br />

never left.<br />

In the new series, Frasier returns to<br />

Boston after a celebrity career on television<br />

(we catch glimpses of this only in flashbacks,<br />

which are hilarious). His goal is to give a guest<br />

lecture in the class of his close friend from<br />

Harvard Alan Cornwall (Nicholas Lyndhurst).<br />

While in town, he checks on Freddy. Sure, the<br />

reunion is tenuous, but Frasier tries his best<br />

to help his son work through some issues he’s<br />

having — whether Freddy wants it or not.<br />

This reboot perfectly reminds us that<br />

when we feel overwhelmed by the challenges<br />

of the world there should always be someone<br />

we can lean on. When some of those people<br />

aren’t there anymore, others can easily<br />

take their place. Martin living on through his<br />

grandson, Freddy, or Niles through his son<br />

David are completely organic… sometimes,<br />

family members have uncanny resemblances!<br />

This reboot so far has painted a beautiful story<br />

of characters reuniting and working out their<br />

differences — like family.<br />

Follow an ancient tradition — treat<br />

yourself to some fancy fingernails.<br />

As early as 5000 BCE, women<br />

in India dipped their nails in henna.<br />

Male warriors around 3200 BCE<br />

included colored nails as part of their war<br />

paint. By 3000 BCE, Chinese women used<br />

crushed orchid and rose petals mixed with<br />

beeswax and egg whites to color their nails,<br />

but the time-consuming process was mainly<br />

reserved for royalty. For much of history,<br />

bleach was used to whiten nails, creating the<br />

illusion of high-status idleness. Around the<br />

15th century, the Incas decorated their nails<br />

with eagles to show their strength. By the<br />

19th century, French manicurists used tinted<br />

creams to shine nails, and American Mary<br />

Cobb Pray brought the French techniques to<br />

Manhattan in 1878.<br />

“Mrs. Pray’s Manicures” treated women<br />

to the ‘soak, cut, shape, polish’ system that<br />

remains the procedure for a simple manicure.<br />

She charged $1.25, almost $40 in today’s<br />

dollars. Her company also created the emery<br />

board and, by 1900, sold a simple form of<br />

home polish — a tinted cream that you rubbed<br />

into your nails and buffed to a shine. In 1916,<br />

Cutex introduced clear nail lacquer, and in<br />

the 1920s, colored lacquer was mass produced,<br />

thanks in part to advancements in<br />

the auto industry and the development of<br />

nitrocellulose. In 1928 Cutex made nail lacquer<br />

remover safe for home use, thus making<br />

it practical for people to do their own nails.<br />

In 1932, Revlon introduced nail polish, and<br />

colored nails became an affordable luxury.<br />

In the 1970s, the number of nail salons in the<br />

United States exploded. In the 1980s and 90s,<br />

artists like Janet Jackson and Coko sparked<br />

trends in complex nail art and Uma Thurman’s<br />

blood red “Pulp Fiction” nails caused a sellout<br />

of Chanel’s “Rouge Noir.” Nail art had entered<br />

the mainstream.<br />

Current nail trends are diverse, from<br />

“Barbie” pink to “Wednesday Addams” black.<br />

There are velvet nails, bubble nails, galaxy<br />

swirls, and latte nails. Gel and dip nails last<br />

longer than traditional polish, though removal<br />

is complex. “Clean” nail polishes promise<br />

style without toxic chemicals. Doing your<br />

nails at home has never been easier and even<br />

press-on nails have improved to the point of<br />

respectability.<br />

A man I dated 20 years ago was “stalking”<br />

me on Facebook to reconnect. He lives in<br />

romantic dinner at The Pier House and spent<br />

a very nice night together. Next day we played<br />

a round of golf at Cape May National and he<br />

went on his way with the promise of getting<br />

together again before the month’s end. Then,<br />

crickets. I did discover during his visit that he<br />

this jerk with an appointment at Cape May<br />

Day Spa. Get the Fall Refresher. Skip the<br />

Fall Rendezvous for Two. Then write a list of<br />

priorities you are looking for in a relationship.<br />

ARIES is a large boy who was came to the<br />

shelter when his owners could no longer keep<br />

him. Once he is comfortable, he loves socializing<br />

and attention. Tennis balls are Aries’<br />

favorite toys and loves to play fetch. His leash<br />

skills are improving and he already responds<br />

well to “sit.” Aries would be best in an adult<br />

home as the only pet in the house.<br />

SPIKE is a 69-pound boy who came to the<br />

shelter when his owner could no longer care<br />

for him. He may look serious, but he lights up<br />

when he sees people. Spike loves to snuggle<br />

and is learning proper behavior cues with his<br />

leash skills improving daily. He should be the<br />

only pet in the house due to his size and live<br />

with a family who has older children.<br />

COOPER is a sweet and lovable boy who lived<br />

with a family for two years, but they can no<br />

longer take care of him. He is a 115-pound boy,<br />

and his leash skills are improving daily, but<br />

he loves to explore his surroundings. Cooper<br />

would be better suited for a family with older<br />

children as he tends to be protective of his<br />

family.<br />

senior citizen was feeding. He and his siblings,<br />

Aston and Porsha, were brought to the shelter<br />

to be domesticated. They are a very social<br />

bunch looking for a new home to take them in.<br />

Royce is great with other cats and is an indoor<br />

cat. If interested in meeting this young boy,<br />

PORSHA and her brothers came to the shelter<br />

when the senior citizen feeding them brought<br />

them in to be domesticated. The group are<br />

ASTON is part of the trio that includes Porsha<br />
