to relax.
“Green plants are good to have year-round,”
Joan says. “Maybe it is as simple as cutting fresh
magnolia leaves from the yard and putting them
in a vase or clipping camellias that bloom in
winter and bring them into the house. Boxwood
clippings will stay green inside. Instead of using
artificial greenery, I prefer preserved boxwood.
You can mist preserved boxwood with green
food coloring in water to perk them up.”
Joan also decorates with balls covered in
mood moss or reindeer moss with a light green
color. Use any moss that has an organic look.
“Adding pillows to chairs or the sofa is one of
the easiest things to change in décor,” Joan suggests,
“and the best way to add a touch of something
fresh. Pillows are also a simple way to add
color to a room.
“Layers in a home create a cozy look,” she
adds. “On a chair, layer a pillow and blanket
throw and place an ottoman to encourage someone
to sit and relax. Another way would be on a
bed layering pillows, an extra blanket and misting
with essential oils to rest better at night.”
Textures also add a cozy feel. Place rugs over
wood or tile floors for warmth. Don’t forget
small spaces and place a small rug in a powder
room.
“Lighting is important and not just overhead
harsh lights,” adds Joan. “Lamps provide soft
light. Before going to bed, lamp light can be lowered
to a soft glow.”
To set a mood and provide a pleasant fragrance,
she will place a candle on a simple tray.
An infuser of essence oils is another way to provide
fragrance in the home.
Starting a fire in the fireplace on a winter evening
is comforting. Place a copper bucket or basket
on the hearth to hold wood or fire starters.
As family gathers around a fire or table, Joan
believes in having cozy traditions. Plan a popcorn
movie night or game night for your family
to spend time together.
“I think about home care and self-care,” she
says. “I don’t think it always has to do with
décor. Cook a fresh pot of soup with a wonderful
fragrance that drifts through the home. Serve
the soup in mugs with a grilled cheese to enjoy
on movie or game night. Have throws in soft
materials for comfort.
“In winter, the days are shorter, and the nights
are longer,” Joan adds. “Along with caring for
your home, be sure to nurture your soul.”
