SportsA look at the role ofsports in entertainmentand its contributionsto Egypt’s cultural andeconomic landscape.By Hanan MohamedPhotography by Kareem Abdel Aziz /Mohamed El Hosary / Amr MostafaSports play a crucial role in the entertainmentindustry, contributing significantlyto the overall cultural and economiclandscape of a country. Theyoffer a diverse range of events, tournaments,and competitions that capture the attentionof a global audience.Countries can benefit from sports in ways suchas economic growth, infrastructure development,cultural exchange, national branding andpromotion, social cohesion and well-being.“Sports represent a strong industry worldwide,with economic and social dimensions in people’slives,” Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhyhas said. He noted that the size of investmentsin the sports industry globally was estimated ataround $840 billion annually in 2020, comparedto $700 billion in 2017.The minister added that the contribution ofsports to the national income comes right afterthe cinema and automotive industries. It equalsthe size of the construction-related businessessevenfold in some countries.According to the newly set national sports strategy,Egypt has supported sports to contributeto comprehensive development underway inthe country. Multiple sports facilities and entiresports cities have been established to hostinternational competitions. Egyptian championsare given the required attention toqualify for international competitions atthe African, world, and Olympic levels.Additionally, investments havebeen made in social and serviceprojects in youth centers andsports clubs.Sobhy explained that the totalinvestments in the sports marketin Egypt amounted to EGP 28 billion, with theprivate sector accounting for about EGP 6 billionover 4 years, primarily in the construction, realestate development, and contracting sectors.For its part, the government focused its investmentson financial resources to achieve the desiredgoals.
