North Sea have enriched the country.
Denmark’s arable land made agriculture
important for its economy so the food
industry here has been significant. Perhaps
because of its lengthy coastline and
relationship with the sea, Denmark is also
the home of the world’s largest container
shipping operator Maersk, while toy
building brick manufacturer LEGO also
originated here.
FISHING STRENGTHS
Each of the countries also has a rich
heritage in the fishing tackle industry –
from hook maker Mustad in Norway to
reel brand Abu Garcia from Sweden, not
to mention lure and tackle firm Westin and
major tackle distributor Svendsen Sport in
Denmark, among many others.
Other great Scandinavian examples
include Ahrex Hooks, Fladen Fishing,
Guideline, Loop, Hansen, A Jensen and
more, along with the European and Middle
East headquarters for eyewear brand Wiley
X in Denmark.
And if you look at its near neighbours,
one of the largest global tackle businesses,
which is also a top name throughout
Scandinavia, is Finland-based Rapala
VMC Corporation.
It’s perhaps not surprising, when you
consider that the three nations also
harbour plenty of anglers.
Figures suggest that there are around
450,000 Danish anglers served by about
160 tackle shops, while the recreational
fishing tackle market is worth more than
$350m.
In Sweden, there are said to be around
1.2 million anglers at present – roughly
860,000 men and the rest women.
Although it appears from the data that this
is about 300,000 less than the year before.
There are an estimated 190 tackle shops
with a total economic value of recreational
fisheries to Sweden’s economy around
$310m.
In Norway those figures are an estimated
1.45 million recreational anglers, 150
tackle shops and an economic value of
$215m.
