Already in February I can feel the
coming of spring as if something has
changed in the air. Or perhaps the early
stocking of spring items in the stores
has me anxious for its arrival!
Then the first purple hyacinth pokes
her head out from under the leaves in
my east facing flowerbed. The warm
sun brings her out. Confusion halts her
progress from time to time when the
snows and cold return.
Before long the first robin appears.
The first day I can replace my winter
boots with walking shoes arrives. Soon
to follow is the first time I exchange my
winter coat for my spring one.
The first sunny day where the
temperature climbs into the double
digits brings people outdoors. Some of
us are instinctively drawn to the nearby
park where we smile and greet one
another. The atmosphere is akin to the

ending of a war. I guess our war with
the harsher conditions of winter is over.
We have survived and were victorious
once more!
The first walk about the yard is made
to clean up as well as to uncover and
discover new sprouts. Some are absent,
evidence that those plants have not
survived the winter. This realization
leads to the first ideas for replanting
beginning to form in my head.
Neighbours are also seen for the first
time when out in the yard and we catch
up over the fence.
The first person is spotted raking
their lawn.
A day comes when I notice for the
first time how the grass has become
greener and the buds on the trees are
becoming more visible.
The first day I realize a load of laundry
can go on the clothesline brings some
excitement into a normally mundane
task.
The first opening of doors and
windows brings fresh air and new
energy into my house.
The first weeds are noticed.
Soon the first lawn mower is heard.
Some firsts have a “yuck” factor
such as the first time the snow melts
completely revealing the garbage
buried underneath. Then there’s the
first time after a rain that the sidewalks
are covered with worms making for a
hazardous and somewhat sickening
walk.
The first thunderstorm of the season
causes grass and plants to have a growth
spurt.
The first bird nests are built and the
first baby birds are seen.
Some firsts are more personal such as
the first time I can sit in the back yard
and journal. Sometimes this is done in
a winter coat with snow still a few feet
away in the shady part of the yard. The
day also comes where I can sit in the
warmth of the sun to enjoy my first cup
of coffee outside.
The first bicycle ride of the season
comes as well.
I look forward to spring and the firsts
of this season. Perhaps I’ll discover
some new ones this year or even some
I may have forgotten!
