The problem is that it’s hard to maintain motivation for outdoor activities like walking, especially with the unpredictable and often gloomy weather that continues through the winter. It’s too easy to look out the window and say “Bah, humbug! Don’t feel like it.” Spring will come, however—maybe sooner than we think if we give any credence to the rodent reckonings of Groundhog Day! Until then, don’t be stymied by less-thanperfect weather. Take what Mother Nature offers and roll with it. Snow—still?! For some, the limited snowfall this year has made the big ‘dumps’ even more onerous. However, it’s likely that we’ll see a few more of those before we’re out of the winter woods. In fact, one of the best ways to embrace an unexpected snowfall is to go into the woods and appreciate the serenity that a fresh snowfall offers. Even a walk around the neighbourhood during or after a snowfall helps us appreciate the way it beautifies a grey, soggy landscape. At this time of year, at least we can be optimistic that a significant snowfall is not likely to hang around too long. It might even make shovelling the white stuff a little more enjoyable! Liquid snow? Okay, rain! If it’s not a torrential downpour, you can still get out for a walk. You’ll probably pick up your pace a little which means that you’ll burn more calories. Throw your rain jacket over your winter coat if need be, pull up the hood and put on your boots. If you live in a wooded neighbourhood, you may not even notice the rain. There are actually several benefits to walking in the rain. Many people find the sound of rain calming at bedtime, so why not try it out as a stress reliever during the day? Focusing on the sound of raindrops hitting the ground or trees while you walk is a great way to take your mind off your worries. Many things in life are beyond our control and the weather is one of them! Taking a walk in the rain might remind you that sometimes we just have to let things go. The smell of rain can also calm you and boost your mood. Petrichor, the smell of the ground and air during and after a rain, is created when compounds from plant oils mix into moisture droplets. The result is that fresh, soothing scent which is nature’s aromatherapy at work. Another interesting health benefit of “rain-walking” is that the air is actually cleaner during and after rainfall. As the water droplets fall, they attract particles of pollution that are lingering in the air, and the air that follows a rainfall contains fewer allergens and dust. A 2015 study suggested that this natural process can positively impact human health. Finally, the natural world is a different place in the rain. If you are observant, you are likely to notice and appreciate this novel perspective. Who knows? Maybe it will inspire a shift in your own way of thinking. No rain or snow, but just dreary? Take advantage of the opportunity to get out on one of our local trails. Even if it’s overcast, hiking in late winter or early spring has several advantages over the summer: more comfortable temperatures, virtually no bugs, abundant bird activity and emerging plant life. Trails are less likely to be busy which promotes a more tranquil experience where TUES. TO FRI. 10AM - 5PM hikers can immerse themselves in their surroundings and leave stress behind. As in any season, hiking is as difficult as you want it to be. Your choice of trail dictates how long and hard you work, and also what type of scenery you will enjoy. If you hike with others, you not only have support and encouragement, but also experience the camaraderie of completing a challenge together. Especially when the weather is messy, ensure your safety and enjoyment by being prepared and understanding how to stay safe on the trail or manage unexpected events. A few reminders: • Respect your physical condition and limitations when choosing a trail. Some local trails can be very wet or muddy and slippery at this time of year. • Dress appropriately for the weather. That includes layers to manage your body temperature and footwear to keep your feet dry and provide traction. A hiking pole or stick is helpful on steep or slippery slopes. • Carry a backpack so that your hands are free. Pack your cell phone (with the what3words app installed), water, snacks and a simple first aid kit. • Stay on blazed trails and pay attention to signage.
