And not just what she meant to me but to my brothers, sisters, father and various other relatives and family members. Some of these were better off ignored for there was enough trouble with the “good” without looking for trouble in the “bad.” Mother, I learned soon enough, handled all the finances of our family as well as the food. When my father was out of work for years she, like a magician, bewildering an audience with slight of hand, put food on the table no matter how little was the income. By dint of careful shopping and being ever alert to the possibilities of locally-grown vegetables, for example, she fed us what we now recognize as a rather good and balanced diet. Nothing fancy, nothing esoteric (unless it came free) but a substantial diet all the same. Mother was on first name terms with the green grocer, Chiarelli on Kenilworth Avenue, and after her weekly, five-block trek to the shop was more than willing to make him an offer on day-old produce. At other times she would organize those old enough into a formidable flotilla of cyclists to ride out to the surrounding fruit farms to pick our own berries, cherries, apples, and peaches. Some of these would be consumed fresh and the remainder converted into preserves —jams, jellies, and canned (actually jarred) chunks of fruit for consumption in winter. The canning season became a major operation. The fruit had to be washed and peeled and cored before stuffing Mother into carefully treated, sterile (lots of boiling water) quart sealers. The production line of family members was a sweaty one. I remember we often did as many as 50 quarts of peaches, a lot of which were “seconds,” meaning they were good enough for preserves but not for consumption as fresh fruit but cheaper because of the bruise or skin tear. Each jar had its two or three minute stay in the boiling water then peach halves were dumped in followed by a dollop or two of syrup. Then a rubber jar ring was placed around the top followed by a heavy glass lid and finally a galvanized screw-on lid twisted down tightly to seal the jar for months. The entire family was recruited and each assigned a job in the process. The youngest might be responsible for bringing the baskets to the tables, while the oldest could be trusted with sterilizing the jars in the boiling water. All of us sweated profusely since the time for canning was late summer or early fall, so we did not mind that the bath afterward was in cold water. No need to light the gas jet under the boiler. There was no such thing as a weekly allowance. When the oldest of us earned a handful of change picking fruit, he/she turned it over to mother for the family coffers, no questions asked. The only relenting of this stricture was at Christmas when the rules were relaxed somewhat and treats were possible, but only if shared equally.
